So Lyons, after being our best SANFL player for over a year, is finally selected, performs very well, and is then rested due to him struggling with the demands of AFL football.

That was close to a month ago - no sign of him returning.

Now, Danger is part time forward, Thommo is down; our two best clearance players aren't where we need them to be. Our next best isn't in the side.

Why?

What has Lyons done, what is the issue with him, and why are we being told lies about him?

Seriously contemplated changing it to "disillusioned fan feels he's been let down by the Crows not selecting his fantasy football player", or something along those lines. Has about the same ring of truth to it as the real thread title.

I would have thought it were obvious. Clearly the coaching staff sees some issue with Lyons, whether that be his disposal, his attitude or something else. They see him a hell of a lot more than we do, and most people in here go purely off the SANFL websites stats. He will most likely get in eventually, but it was a surprise seeing Riley in over him, given they play literally the exact same position.

Is it possible that they've actually been telling us the truth - that he really didn't cope with the rigours of AFL football very well and is in need of a rest? I know he's still playing football but SANFL footy is much less demanding than AFL football.

I can't think of any other reason why he isn't even listed in the emergencies, other than something sinister. It doesn't add up.

Give it a rest.

You probably thought everything was on track with Gunston right up until he hopped on the plane home

Love to see the Kid at Tigerland next year
He's in a similar boat to a few of our players - Brodie Martin, Aiden Riley (until this week) and Jarryd Lyons. All out of the team almost permanently but performing well in the SANFL. Whatever the reason, they aren't getting opportunities with us. All have been on the list for multiple years now, so they aren't raw kids and our form is average but they still can't get a game.

Will be interesting to see if any clubs have a crack at them.

Whats his contract status

I watched him on Sunday and it was no picnic on the ball. You might say SANFL is less demanding than AFL football but to me it's far more physical. As the players aren't quite as clean and quick there's a tendency for a more hits and bumps. The ball doesn't move as quickly and players get caught and hit hard.
Lyons was right in the thick of things and when Slattery was on him he was tagged pretty hard.

If he went there to have a rest then I imagine that's not what he's getting. After that game he would have been a pretty sore boy. What he is becoming is a pretty good clearance player who works his butt off.
I'm at a loss as to what more he can do to impress the selectors.

I've never heard anyone describe AFL as anything but a step up from SANFL.

His departure had nothing whatsoever to do with a lack of opportunities, if that's what you're implying..

The only reason I can think of ( outside of funny conspiracy theories) is that he hasn't quite got the tank on him yet to play midfield in the AFL and that he needs another pre season to achieve it. He was injured a lot over his first 18 months and probably wasn't able to get a fitness base to work on.

I hope that is what it is because the kid has attributes I really like in a midfielder and would be disappointed if we sought to trade him at years end.

He was a small/mid sized forward as a junior, we're crying out for a decent one, he still can't get a game...

That won't happen this year. Sando is intent on playing Porps in that role even though it is looking like injuries and father time are coming close to pulling a curtain on Porps career

look i want to see him in and playing cause i thought he was doing ok.
i have no idea why he isnt, but we're just gonna have to accept it, as whoever said earlier, the club knows a hell of a lot more about the situation than we do.

hoping hes not thinking of leaving.

IMO, the OP has a fair enough point.

Our midfield has been under-performing all year (particularly for contested ball) & Lyons has been the standout midfielder in the SANFL, so strange he has been given limited opportunities. His touches in the Kangaroos game (one of our few decent ones) were very important.

Can only assume there is more to it than meets the eye.

Not dropping Porps about a month into the season has been Sando's biggest selection folly this year.

I'm all for a fit & in form Porps being in our best line-up, but blind Freddy can see that he is a shadow of his former-self & lacking confidence.

A few weeks at Westies should have given him an injection of form, but we have continued to carry him, along with too many other players out of form ... which has resulted in us having too many passengers & losing games.

Selecting players who were dropped for 1 game, missed an SANFL game to get back form has also been stupid this year. Our selection/rotation policy has been dumb at best.

Lyons has real footy nous and talent and his inclusion along with Lynch and Kerridge gave the club a lift when finally picked and now only 1 in team as we spiral downwards.
Lyons ability to get ball and release under real pressure is special and if given confidence by coaches then could see him hurt opposition more .
Yes his defensive pressure and tackling need improving but have a look at 2012 PF team as biggest game we will see for awhile .
Forward Line
Callinan --- very very average though did a couple last week but normally go past as not there.
Porps --- Not capable of raising arm to tackle let alone hold onto someone .
Petrenko -- Had a shoulder injury and couldnt tackle even if could have got near the ball.
Vince -- You could mess up your hair by tackling or get hurt and not go out Sat . night.
Then of course have great tacklers in Mackay etc etc.
Regarding Gunston although we believe opportunities was not major reason I can only say as watched him carefully as was keen to see drafted by us that in a very average performing team he was given limited opportunities until late mid in last year and blossomed from there.
