I've been Bullish from the first glimpses that I saw of Lyons and Lynch playing for Glenelg a few seasons back that they would both become good AFL players. I still think Jarryd has heaps to offer.

Lyons is up against it I think, has some good traits, but is too small for a pure inside mid role at AFL which is probably his best suited role, too slow and wayward with his kicking to make the most of a flanker type role, especially given the wealth we now have in the small forward position. IMO should have seen the writing in the wall like Kerridge did and sought opportunities elsewhere.

Kudos for sticking it out and it's hard to be too hard on a guy for being so loyal to our club and is more than handy midfield depth, but probably not doing the best by his career. Hope he can prove me wrong.

Always liked Lyons and thought if his kicking could improve he would be a good chance to make it. Funnily enough his kicking improved last season but I'm still not sure. His lack of pace really stands out at AFL level. Not many players can get away with that e.g. Sam Mitchell is one of the few.

Will be interesting to see him play 4 quarters this season.

Is the best kick and mark of the m crouch CEY trio but is also the slowest. Give him a season and he is a 20 goal a year midfielder

The annoying thing is we still don't really know and that's an indictment on the AFC not the player.

13 games in 2015 and 8 were sub!!

He's actually played some good games but as with other young players the second they drop off theyre out. Was the same for CEY last year.

This is where I get a little critical of our development over the past 8-10 years or so. Midfielders, IMO, you should genuinely know if they're best 22 material by the end of their 3rd season, if not earlier. If you're still not sure by then, you're probably just as well off encouraging them to seek opportunities elsewhere in the name of keeping your list turning over, otherwise they become list cloggers who perennially fight each other for spots and prevent youngsters from gaining valuable experience.

I can't beleive how many of our supporters question his kicking. Are we watching the same guy? His kick is superb. If we could or he could find a way to have time and space around the forward 50, he'd carve up, the forwards would get it lace out every time.

What differentiates these three:

CEY - great hands, big body
M Crouch - hard at it, great ball sense
Lyons - great ball sense, great disposal

Does that sum it up?

I think Hampton and CEY are the way midfielders are going in terms of size - but M Crouch has such a determination about him, and that bit of mongrel. What does Lyons offer above all these guys? His disposal is very good.

I guess we will see where it ends, but 2016 is a big year for these players.

This is kind of what I meant. You have to have other elite skills. I wouldn't say Sam Mitchell has elite agility, I just think he's really smart and knows where the space is and where players are.

Given, if you believe the afl.com.au article that he's super fit this pre-season and he's hitting his prime...
And given his past semi-selection, this would be the final shot at it.

I'd give the bloke the first 5 games of the season to kick some butt.

Don't quote me but I think Mitchell ranked 'top 10' or so at his draft camp on agility

Mitchell also uses both feet. It's still being argued what his natural foot is. Allows him a lot more time and space because he is able to turn either way and still dispose of it.

Please..... He's average at best by foot, nothing more. Never has and probably never will be anything more than that.

I really don't like his chances. With the way the game is changing and how players need to have such versatility to their game, Lyons chances are slim. Add to the fact we have now have limited rotations + someone like Pyke at the helm who seems to be big on the whole versatility thing and I'm not convinced Lyons can make an impact.

He's not quick, not tall or a great contested mark, not a penetrating or long kick, and he's not super fit. He's pretty much a Scotty T replacement and we already have someone better for that role in Matt Crouch.

Grigg has an elite left boot, CEY is unlike any other midfielder we have, Gore is lightning off the mark and a better user of the ball. All these other inside midfielders bring a different dimension to the table

Even resting up forward, we now have players like Knight, Menzel, Atkins, Milera, Hampton and potentially McGovern soon too who can all play that HFF flank role.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Jarryd succeed at the crows after all this time, I just don't like his chances at all. Unless we have an inside midfielder crisis, then I can't see him playing much still. Already have Thommo and BoB in the same 22, not sure there's any more room for another vanilla player in Lyons.

His kicking is not superb however it is not as bad that some are led to believe

If he is getting games this year he needs endurance. He needs to be the player who can spend 80% of the time on ground rotating between the middle and half forward each quarter, allowing us to rotate other players off the bench. If he can do that and impact up forward, he has a chance otherwise I see him playing between 6-10 games again this year

This is where I feel i might be in agreeance with Vader (I think it was) who suggested the sub rule might have given Jarryd more games than he would have gotten without it. I think he can play, he's a natural footballer, has no trouble getting the ball, is great at the stoppage mostly getting the ball outside the pressure area and is one of the very, very few footballers on our list that I've seen drill the ball off either foot to a player leading at him. But if the knock on his endurance is correct, then he might just be one of those people with a low ceiling for fitness and this will make it hard to select him for full games.

With your draw it is a uphill battle to make finals but not impossible but imo by halfway through when Thompson makes the 300 he may be pushed out if finals are off the cards

Very good comparison re the relative strengths of both players.

With both Dangerfield and Thompson in the middle, Lyons has had minimal DECENT opportunity at AFL level.

You obviously saw zero of M. Crouch's junior or TAC career is all I can say....
