Reported on TFS by Damian Barrett. Said he had an infection on the foot. Not the most ideal news. Wonder when the big guy will be back. I have a nasty feeling about this now.:(
 
I wouldn't worry too much, they got to it pretty early, and he's been back in hospital for treatment.

Hard to know exactly what the ramifications could be, but at this stage I'd back the Docs in to know exacl what they're dealing with.

Besides, it was reported by Barrett, and we all know he likes to 'expand' the story a little.

Infections happen, not ideal but far from the end of the world.
 
It's been 9 weeks since his injury.

The information appears to be that the cast is on for around 9 weeks with 3 changes every 3 weeks relating to the angle of the foot.

Possible complications are as follows:

•Whichever treatment option is used, there is a chance that the Achilles tendon will not heal fully, and further treatment such as surgery may be needed.
•Complications of surgery: these are usually minor complications such as a wound infection or reduced sensation near the operation site. About 4 in 100 people get a wound infection following surgery to fix a ruptured Achilles tendon.
•The tendon may scar or may become shorter during the healing process.
•There is also a chance that the tendon could re-rupture (get torn again later). According to some research, the risk of a re-rupture is about 4 in 100 with surgical treatment and about 12 in 100 with conservative treatment.

Looks like (hopefully in this case) it's a minor complication. They say the time frame of returning to playing sports is 4-12 months.

There's no way will rush Roughie back. Look for him to start his pre-season around June 2012.

He also said they know he can play CHB and when was the last time he did that?

As far as setbacks go an infection would be the best one to get wouldn't it?

it wasnt a ruck injury, rough could have done it when taking off for a lead or changing direction. its was just unlucky so i dont really see why not keep him as a pinch hitter as his second efforts and skills where valuable
 
I would just be playing him as a genuine utility. Play him stints at full forward. Some as a high half forward/link man. A couple of minutes per quarter in the ruck. Throw him down back against taller sides.
With Hale doing well, and Clarko preferring a smaller and more attacking defence, Rough's versatility will make him the perfect pinch hitter. Is able to provide balance to any part of the ground.
 
It most certainly was a ruck injury. That achilles was definitely weakened by the extra springing required to ruck. It's no coincidence whatsoever that he'd played for 3 or 4 years with virtually no injury worries, then gets a season ending one the first year he plays second ruck. He needs to be kept out of that position.

Most certainly was a coincidence.

He's been jumping up high all over the ground for years taking spectacular marks. Not to mention that he wasn't even in a rucking situation when it occurred.

Which completely fails to explain why ruckmen all over the league aren't snapping their achilles tendons left, right and centre.

Unless one chooses to believe that ruckmen are a special breed, evolved with highly developed achilles tendons far beyond the capacities of normal humans.

I'm sorry, it doesn't stack up logically; it's the purely human pattern of learning, where two events, closely related in time, tend to be associated in a cause/effect relationship.
 
Just a quick question for the group - In order to alleviate the stress on Roughie's injured Achilles tendon could the big fella be retrained to adjust his leap, first sprint step etc. to his non dominant leg i.e.: learn to take off naturally on the non preferred side?

Much like Cyril’s retraining to a new running style.

Even if he could be taught to activate this mechanism (on a conscious level) 40-50% per game he would reduce the workload on the ligament for 2-3 year period post injury and back into match conditions. Thus giving the ligament time to recondition to match play without stress and hopefully regain full strength.

Your thoughts guys?

I think the injury was also ruck related. Roughy had to jump a lot higher to combat the lack of height he had in the ruck.

When Roughy was played as a permanent forward, he'd leap what 5-6 times a game? In the ruck he may of doubled of even tripled that amount. Being the competitor he is, Roughy would of given his all in each ruck contest. Unfortunately though, the extra stress on his ankle (which he would not of be used to) forced his tendon to give way IMO.

It also doesn't explain how people who don't jump or require spring tear their Achilles. I managed to tear mine walking down a snowy Hikone street in January. Not as bad as big Rough's, but I certainly wasn't springing along before it happened.
 
Can't say it was the ruck as its not a common ruckman injury, but i guess you can't say it 100% wasn't either.

There's no way to prove it either way. Just a freak accident.

As long as Hales form continues and Bailey stays fit, i dont see the need to play roughy in the ruck, especially next year.

The problem is the Hale, Roughy, Buddy forward line didn't seem to work as well as any combination of the 2.

Just use him whereever, i guess. Forward, Back, He can even play as a marking ruck rover and throw Buddy on the ball when Rough and Hale are up front.

Just dont have all 3 forward at the same time too much, should be easy enough to workout for a genius like Clarko.

Lets just Roughy is back better than ever.
 
Roughy in the backline, hitting the ruck from time to time would be ideal IMO. His around the ground work in bursts would be a weapon (not a permanent second fiddle though). If his pre-season will start in June 2012 (as mentioned by a poster), surely this would mean no rough next season? Is it possible that he will not play next year at all?
