Not often I have a go at a saints player but surely Pierce or Longer are doing better than Holmes. If the game consisted of hitting the ball with your hand than he is a star. Unfortunately it doesn't though. I hope he is best this week and does enough in the ruck to help us win.

Strange move really. Pierce gets put in the extended squad last weekend, now he's out and Holmesy is a chance to play. Great to have depth but why this week and not last?

Insurance for Hickey since he has been sore recently and apparently crook this week.
Pierce was emergency last week and as such didn't play a game. If he was held over as emergency this week, with the chance Hickey might not get up, then he will potentially miss 3 games in a row (Sandy have a bye next week).
Holmes isn't taking anyones spot away from them, as Carlisle will not be coming onto the list anytime soon. And (full disclosure, I haven't had a chance to get to Sandy this year) Longer is apparently not in form and may have been concussed recently(?) so probably wasn't considered to be ready to play.
The 2 of them will probably alternate as emergency (and Billy when his form improves) from now so that none of them miss too much footy
