Re: 9. Jason Saddington

Traded for pick 52 in 2005(?), thought to be a player who fills gaps till the youngsters develop but played only a few games and injuries have had the better of him. Looks to be delisted soon. Not sure when his contract is up. Can be used for depth though.

Contract expires end of this year, hence a delisting looks almost certain.

Nothign against Jason at all. Always liked his footy while at Sydney. He was taken for us as a depth player, to fill the void while the kids developed, and while our back 6 is so secure, and with a lot of young defenders coming through, i can't see us keeping him next year.

Yeah, I was quite happy when we got Saddo. He was brought in at a time when we wanted Lance to go forward (Fev was in the doldroms), and T-Bird needed some help down back, and O'hAilpins development was uncertain. I thought his experience, and ability to play tall, and his physical game would help us down back.
Sadly, his knee injury kept him out last year, opening the door for Bower, who showed he'll be a player, combined with the ever impressive development of Setanta, has left Saddo to the role of a depth player for injury. Now with Waite pushing back, and Austin recruited, it would seem that Saddo is rapidly moving to the back of the list, which ironically will happen when he is in the best shape he's been in for years.
Would have to play extremely well in the two's to come in for an injured player ahead of Bower or Hartlett, and would then have to use that chance to push for a contract extension.

Depending on the development, and injuries to other players he may get a one year deal, but will more than likely be de-listed at the end of this season.

Re: 9. Jason Saddington

Here's a question for you guys. I am having a debate with friend, which now has money on it.

Has Jason Saddington ever rucked a centre bounce for Carlton??

Not to my knowledge.
I can't even remember him being in the C sq let alone take the ruck.

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ps-carlton-blues--jason-saddington?year=2007

Footywire.com doesn't record a single hitout for Saddo last year or this............so if he did take the bounce he didn't win it.

I'd have my money on he has NEVER taken a C sq bounce in his career, let alone with the Blues.

I would divy up between:
Ackland, Cloke, Kennedy, S O'hAilpin, Hampson, Kreuzer for the C sq, with some mids and forwards splitting others around the ground........with the exception of Saddo.

Thanks for that bluebear. I appreciate your help!! :)

I also didnt think that he had been in there. But a big carlton mate of mine is adamant that he remembers him in there for a couple of cq rucks, in ratten's reign towards the end of the season. I informed him about the footywire stats but he kindly reminded me that if the undersized saddo was in there it was unlikely that he would win a tap.

He also used the argument that if we were asked if cooney had been in the ruck in a couple of years, most would say no, but of course he did earlier this year.

Im a little perplexed by this bloke if you havent noticed.

Saddo played 5 0f Ratts 6 games at the end of last year.

The only game I didn't see was the Dons game.

I can assure you Saddo didn't ruck in the others.......and I'd be shocked if he did in the bombers match, given that Ackland played and had 19 hitouts, Setanta had 9 h/o and it was only Laycock on the other side (no Hille).

I think you can claim your bet.:thumbsu:

Re: 9. Jason Saddington

I hope that Jason gets at least another season. He was doing good things with the Bullants, and is fitter now than he has been for a long time.
He was effective in the match against Port, but outsized against David Hale last Sunday.....and suffered for a couple of dodgy umpiring decisions.

He's only 29/30, and can defend well.

Send Setanta and his brother home, and give Jason a run. He'll be a plus as an older head down back.

I've been a wrap for him for years, he was pretty good with the Swans and has a year or two of value left.

He wasn't that good against Port...........he was O.K., and given the flogging Port copped he could have done better.

Yes, Hale is taller, but Saddo didn't get a body on him and allowed himself to be outplayed for height.
Mistakes kids would make, and sadly for Saddo, thats the way it will be.

I was hoping at the start of this season that he would be our "wildcard" for the reasons you suggest......injury free, expereinced......etc, but I think Saddo has struggled at senior level, and another pre-season will see Austin go ahead of him......putting Saddo well back in terms of selection (behind Jammo, Bower, Setanta, Waite, Aussie, Thornton).

Will be taking up a kids spot on the list. Gone.

Re: 9. Jason Saddington

maybe he didn't do that badly agaisnt his last AFL game against north melbourne on david hale as geelong couldn't let him get eight even with their all australian defence (saddo did a better job on hale).

but he still deserves to get sacked. get rid of saddington, ackland and blackwell.

Re: 9. Jason Saddington

Well he did go. A servicable player for the Swans and played a few decent with us. End of a respectable career. Good Luck Saddo.
