Jericho on the ball

If looks and first impressions count, Adelaide’s Luke Jericho has started a long, successful AFL career.

The 19-year-old utility made an auspicious debut against St Kilda at AAMI Stadium last Saturday.

Playing mostly as a half-forward, his statistics were modest enough – four kicks, seven handpasses, four marks and one goal – but it was easy to see why his teammates rate him so highly.

Jericho is deceptively tall (189 centimetres) and his speed and agility, particularly his leaping off muscular legs, stamp him as a formidable all-round athlete, which he is, as he proved statistically at the National AFL Draft Camp late in 2002, before the Crows claimed him from West Adelaide soon after with their first pick (No. 32 overall) in the draft.

His good looks, blond-tipped hair and acrobatics remind some Adelaide fans – dare it be said so soon? – of a famous, favourite son of West Adelaide and the Crows – Tony Modra.

And like Modra, Jericho seems quite a laidback, unaffected type who was not overawed by playing his first AFL match so soon into a new season, given that he had spent much of last year developing with West Adelaide reserves.

“It was great to get out there and have a bit of a run around,” Jericho said of his debut. “It was something different and I really enjoyed it.

“It was definitely a step up – the intensity and just being out there for the first bounce. It was amazing – the speed and just everything. Instead of running, you’re sprinting; instead of jogging, you’re running.

“It was great to play the first couple of games in the SANFL. I think I was a bit lucky to kick a few goals (six against Norwood last Saturday week) and get put up into the AFL team. Hopefully I can keep my spot and keep playing well.”

Was it hard to come into a side under pressure for a breakthrough win and looking to the younger players to blossom quickly?

“I didn’t really feel any pressure at all,” Jericho said. “I just wanted to go out there and play as well as I could. I felt a lot more comfortable as the game went on, and then in the third quarter I started taking a couple of marks and my confidence just kept going from there.

“We’ve been improving the last couple of weeks. I think we’re on the right track. If it had been pretty much any other team in the AFL (other than St Kilda), I think we probably would have got over the line at the weekend.

“Trent Hentschel (21) obviously played pretty well and we’ve got Brent Reilly (20), who missed out at the weekend (with a thigh injury), to come back and ‘Schuey’ (Jacob Schuback, 20) has been playing a few games, so it’s not all doom and gloom. We’ve definitely got some good young blokes coming through.”

Didn't take long did it:rolleyes:

Get the media stuff out of the way early. Let the kid play from here on.

I think he's alright. Good pace, nice mark and moves well.

What did Burton say/do to him?

Brett Burton is the LAST person who should be yelling at people for stuffing up.

Sounds like an early summation of Smart, when he was playing for Souths, prior to the crows formation.
Even the hair was mentioned back then:)

If he turns out to be half as good.

I am not sure what he said but I watched the replay of the game and there was this incident on HFF when Jezza was running at the ball attempting to mark, Birdman was coming from the angle behind Jezza. Jezza junped but couldn't quite grab the ball at full reach so it went over for a throw in. As Jezza was running back to his position Burton gave him a spray.

Fancy someone like Burton giving player a spray. The bloke Kerley described as football-brain dead.:D

I think everyone will be happy if Jezza turns out to be as good as Smart.

Watts, Jericho and hopefully Krueger will provide us with a good marking forward line in years to come. I know there is a lot of water to go under the bridge but there are some very good signs.

Kerls like Jezza and he is fast becoming Hentschel's number 1 fan. :D Which is more than could say about a few others at the club including coaches and players

I reckon we should start a campaign to give one of our more prominent players a really dodgy nickname that makes no sense and see if it's used when said player has a man of the match performance.

Really put your theory to the test ;)

I reckon its a great idea.

Any suggestions???????:)

Tyson Edwards: Leopardskin Chocolate Factory
Matthew Clarke: Palm Sunday
Ken McGregor: Darth Afro
Wayne Carey: Rolf Harris

I dunno, I was never good with nicknames :o :p

I reckon Macca23 is Rucci.
Goes to trainings, sees the Port games, has had conversations with some players, but most importantly has tried to start a "journalists" club right here on this board with his assistant Radar. :D

It's just that on here he doesn't have an editor that chops and changes his articles until they don't make any sense. :p

Nah Macca talks too much sense to be Rucci! ;)

Please Macca tell us it's not true...

If Macca23 was in a band he would probably call it Maccarucci and the 23 meatballs. :p :D

Yes, but the trouble is if all our youngsters turn out to be half as good as the last generation, we will be, well, half as good.

Not sure how to interpret this...

If you're positive, take it as an assertion that he is so good he will outshine all the others.

If you're cynical, well, I'm sure you can work that one out if you are!

Well, are you? :D

Well, that really lifted my spirits coming out of hospital!! :D

Wouldn't everyone love it to be thought that they just might be Michaelangelo Rucci?? :p

No, I'm definitely not - nor am I Caroline Wilson!!!

I have had footy conversations with the painter of the Sistine Chapel though.

He is actually naturally quite intelligent, but his total anti-Crows bias turns him into a knob!!!

Have you noticed an improvement in some of his articles lately??? Particularly the ones that he has lifted directly from here!! :D
