Should we have a shot at him? He's left the Kangaroos now, and will nominate (I think) for the National Draft.

Do you think we should consider him with our Pick 20 if he is there?

My thinking is yes, especially if he has shown an interest prior to the draft if the FFC approach him.

pre season draft pick. That is what we should be offering.Anything else and we won't know if he really wants to move or not.Draft picks for young talent.Pre season picks for more experienced players who can help in the best 22.

I think he's going to put himself in the National Draft though, which means (guessing) he'll go in the second round late (Geelong). I reckon we'd have the chance to get him with Pick 20 and if we've sounded him out about it then I'd be happy with it.

Pick 20? God, no.
Pick 80? Maybe.

Smith is the most injury plagued player in the AFL, and so far has gotten through on just his potential. And there is only so far that can get you. If you can't get on the park, then it doesn't matter how good you could be.

And I don't think it's a coincidence that Smith, with bung ankles and hamstrings, is apparently looking for a club with excellent medical facilities....

Remember David Trotter? Maybe the problem is that at the Kangaroos they don't have access to the best medical staff and facilities....

I have no doubt the Kangaroos have the worst facilities of any club, but I can't see even the best medical staff working miracles.

Smith's ankles are in pretty bad shape, and apparently he had to change his running style. It could work, but I think it's a pretty slippery slope once you change something as significant as that.

But really, I don't think it will matter. It sounds like Smith is set on Geelong and I don't think a move to WA is really on the cards.

If he goes to Geelong, assuming he gets and stays fit, Geelong may have an opportunity to test Drum's new passion for the game and desire to play for the jumper.

How so? Completely different players.

Admittedly he's had injury problems (everyone is aware of it)

But take a look at these numbers from 2007.

Very very handy.

He obviously does not rate the Kangas medical staff and possibly blames them for not getting him right.

I daresay at 23 years old and if he's fit he's better than what we would draft at Pick 20. He won't be around at Pick 80.

Should be the sort we have a crack at, use our off field wealth and facilities etc as a carrot. And we have lots of salary cap space, of which Geelong should have zero.

PSD only though.

Should get in his ear about not nominating for the ND and waiting for the PSD where we'll draft him with a nice pay check and some money off field from our big mining sponsor.

There is no way we should take him in the ND, if he were to go in there he'd be gone by pick 48 definately and maybe by pick 36. Our first pick needs to be Morabito if he's still available and pick 20 if for a KPP like Black

We've seen with the likes of O'Brien, Browne etc that sometimes players just can't cut it. However, the key difference is Smith can play. The guy could be one of the elite players of the competition.

I do think it is a bit unfair to be blaiming North's medical staff for his injuries though. Sure they are strapped for cash and have poor facilities, but I don't know anybody else could have done any better with Smith.

I think the chances of him getting on the park with North and with somebody else is pretty much the same ... pretty small ... but for a PSD pick I don't see any better options. The one thing in our favour is we could offer him more money than Geelong.

If he was interested in coming I'd take him for one of 3rd rounders ...however if he is not interested in coming - I'd not even grab him in the PSD to be honest.

If we were to get him ....it is the end of BOB or Foster as you can only carry so many of these type of players.

I really rate him but unfortunately his injuriy concerns are a big issue, if he wanted to come here then I'd hope we use a 3rd rounder on him, nothing more though.

Read in another forum that he actually failed a medical with Collingwood. Not a great sign...

I rescind my Pick 20 suggestion and make it either a pick after 49 or the PSD, if he wants to come..

PSD pick 3.

Anywhere else. No thanks.

Couldn't agree more. Get into his ear about playing for us, show him our facilities (they must be better than Melbourne's) and get him to nominate for the PSD. If he really wants to paly for us he will nominate PSD

That's right - and how it should be.

If he is interested, then bring him over and (with all due respect) give Foster the heave ho if we have to. Foster's basically proving himself to be nearly as injury prone and not as talented (IMHO) so why not take a chance on a well known talent that might just need a season or so to sort his long term injuries out.

He knows the frustration I have had in the past two years. The thing that Brad did concede to me was that although the facilities (at Arden St) are going to be fantastic, there hasn't been enough money put into the medical and strength and conditioning teams.

will take the club 12-18 months to get the whole structure together

So obviously the North medical side of things isn't up to scratch, yet, for him to be able to get the best out of his body. Which is obviously why he want's the move. Good luck to him.

We aren't listed as the teams who have made contact with him but i wouldn't be against it.

I have no doubt the Kangaroos have the worst facilities of any club, but I can't see even the best medical staff working miracles.

You must be unfamiliar with the truly ordinary facilities at Richmond, Port and Melbourne. Con is widely recognised in Victoria as one of the top two or three AFL doctors - and he works for almost nothing. Unlike certain "club doctors" who insist on 6 figure annual payments, plus TV rights and radio fees.

Smith's ankles are in pretty bad shape, and apparently he had to change his running style. It could work, but I think it's a pretty slippery slope once you change something as significant as that.

Spoken as an ankle surgeon, no doubt, and with Smith's personal treatment file in front of you. Seriously, please don't speculate without sources=rces - if you have a link or source to that medical info, post it, otherwise leave it out - unless you are his surgeon.

But really, I don't think it will matter. It sounds like Smith is set on Geelong and I don't think a move to WA is really on the cards.

This only works if he plays for geelong on rookie wages. If he does, good luck to him. Otherwise, why shouldn't Freo approach him? Personally, I wouldn't have a bar of him, because I think his "blaming" of the North club shows a weak spirit, lack of heart and lack of willingness to accept that injury rehab is partly a player's responsibility. But that's just my view - which is worthless.

Admittedly he's had injury problems (everyone is aware of it)

The bit in purple is why we shouldn't pick him. Heath blames the brewers for his drinking problem. Last thing we need is another avoider of responsibility on our list. I'd rather pick up a mature ager with dodgy knees who works hard and accepts sole responsibility for their career.

Shirley. Robertson. Roe. Save a space to re-rookie Pratt.

PSD or pick 68 if we delist both Foster and O'Brien

No. BoB and Fossie Bear both have more heart, and wouldn't blame a medico for their failure to perform.

The bit in purple is just self serving rubbish from Smith and his manager. When Scott actually comes out and says that, and the Roos sack Con as North's team doctor, then I'll believe that they were responsible for Jesse's injury history. Con single handedly kept Harvey, Allison, Carey and Rock (plus Archer and Simpson) on the park for less than 19K a year from 1998-1007 - surely the best value per $ spent of any medical department in the AFL. Funny how no other North player in the last ten years has blamed the Roos for their injuries - just magic man Jess.
