I'm not sure what dropping him to VFL level will do for him

Dropping him to VFL level would send the same message as it does to any player when they get dropped: the selection committee wants to see more from him in the seniors. There's nothing wrong with that, and there never has been. It's just vaguely conceivable he'll get a lot more of the ball in the VFL and make much more of an impression in a game than he's been doing at AFL level too. I'm as keen as you to see him do well, and I think getting his hands on the ball far more regularly in a match situation is crucial for him at the moment.

I tyhink you'll find most small forwards in the comp have a huge role defensively. In todays football run off half back is vital and it needs to be curtailed if you are to win.

Of course that's the case, and I never said otherwise. However, there's also another rather important string they need to have to their bow as well.

If Leroy is dropped then our forward line becomes even more of a revolving door.

With Davey's injury Leroy is now too important in our forward structure to drop.

thats not the point. the point is do you think it is a good matchup for leroy? to get his confidence back on track and have an impact on a game?

Leroy will play in the forward line.
Slattery will get the job, even if i think he should be dropped. The only reason why his getting a game now is that we have no small defenders to re-place him.

Edit : I think we should give Welsh a shot at Rioli

i don't like winderlich with the defensive jobs. his job should be to create run into space and give us options. .

times i've seen him down back i dont think hes made for it. . maybe gus could have another shut down role this week, worked with mcleod?

I can't see Winderlich getting a go on Rioli after his fantastic game against the Crows playing up on the half forward flank.

We shouldn't be worrying to much Rioli is only a first year player. We should be focusing on eliminating Hodge and Mitchell from the contest as much as we can.

Its just Winderlichs size, speed and ability that will get him the job on Rioli this week.

I don't see Slattery on Rioli because Slattery would be too slow compared to rioli and slattery will most likely get a tagging role this week anyway, Lovett will probably run with Bateman, Monfries I think will want to play the same role as last week (as Forward Pressurer/tagger) and NLM is probably in the same situation as Slattery, all I can see NLM playing on is Mark Williams. Jetta on the other hand could be a good option as well as Winda's, but lack of a defencive role from Jetta could just get Winda's over the line.

No way known he'll get dropped.

He's playing as a small forward in a team that gets the footy inside 50 less then any other side. Its hard enough living on scraps as a small forward, jetta is living on bugger all.

His defensive work is very good, if we can start winning some clean ball out of the middle a little more then we'll see his game go up another notch.

Top post! I really think we have to persist with Jetta. His stats over the last few weeks don't reveal the real picture. I think he's showing improvement and should be getting to full fitness.

I'd start Monfries on Rioli... or Atkinson if he comes in. Jetta's an option, as is Houli, but prefer them in the forwardline & in the guts, respectively. NLM? Probably plays too loose.

Don't like Winderlich down back and Slattery should be playing for Bendigo, IMO.

All that said, I don't think this match-up will be where the game will be won or lost.

Wow, It really is a credit to a player of ten games when there is a whole thread on who to match up on him.

Not that there shouldn't be though, he is a dangerous player.

Play your quickest small defender on him and then swap in the 3rd quarter. Cyril doesn't have a huge tank as its his first season.
