Coach JLo v RTB

Groundhog Day...

Someone please enlighten me on the purpose of this thread and how it effects our games going forward?
To be fair, nothing we say here really affects anything to do with the club, management & team selection, it’s about opinions & some need to get them off their chest.
It’s like the politics thread, what’s that got to with our footy club & going forward? I hate it & never read it, but it’s somewhere to push political comments, just like comparisons between the 2 coaches.
Send it here so it doesn’t take over other threads.

I would argue that no thread on BF has an affect on Freo games. Why join BF if that’s your attitude?
Well discussing Ins and Outs has a go-forward outlook wouldn't you think?

I just don't see any relevance discussing Jlo vs RTB after Jlo has 7 games into his coaching career. Pretty obvious.

Never liked Lyon even when we were winning , I'll argue anyone till I'm blue in the face that wants to tell me he 100% put the interests of the FFC ahead of the interests of R Lyon , no matter whether JLo succeeds or fails I would be shocked if I ever had similar feelings about him

I'm going to enjoy cutting down your post.

I have been a freo fan since late 2001-early 2002.

I will savour every final we played under Ross Lyon from 2012-15.

Lyon is the only coach to get us to a grand final and the only coach to give us finals for 2 years in a row

Again...... go look at that wonderful history freo had between 1995-2010. Freo only made finals in 3 of those years: 2003, 2006 and 2010.

As I said, freo should of made finals each year from 2003-6. Pity we didnt make a prelim in 2003 or 2004 or 2005 as that could of been enough experience to win a flag in 2006.

Compare Adelaide, Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Swans and West coast finals record from 1995-2010. Except Port who have made 7 finals appearences and 2 grand finals and got 1 flag from 1997-2010, the other 4 sides have made finals at least 8 times played in 2 grand finals and won 1 premiership. So if you have played in 2 grand finals in 16 years that means your team won 2 prelims.

I am going to remind you finals in 3 years out of 16 from 1995- 2010 is a pathetic record considering back then it was a final 8 system with 16 teams and 12 wins was easily enough to get a finals spot. Hell 11 or even 10 was enough to sneak in.

I will give you 2 choices....

you get to choose one of these 2 Options.

Option 1 : endure that pathetic period from 1995-2010 when freo made 3 finals in 17 years, in which it could of been 5-7 times if you included near misses in which which we should of made finals in 1995, 1997 2004 and 2005 and 2011.

Option 2: Go through the ross Lyon era of 2012-19.

Very easy option for me. Option 2 any day of the week.

tonygeeks as far as I know it could be another 20 years before we make another grand final.

lol. I mean I could report you for this but its not worth the effort.

Hilarious.....

You claim you dislike Ross Lyon, despite that he is the only coach to get us into a grand final.

Chris Connolly and Mark harvey are the only coaches that got us into finals. Only Problem is Connolly or Mark Harvey never gave us finals for even 2 consecutive Years. Lol.

Crows are heading to their 1st wooden spoon in 2020. Yet, you look at their finals history from 1991-2020. They made finals in the following years....

1993: Made a Prelim under Graham cornes.

1997-8: Back to back flags under former cats coach Malcolm Blight.

2001-3:Under experienced coach Gary Ayres, Lost to carlton in an Elim final, made a prelim in 2002. in 2003, belted the eagles 113-57 in a home elim final before losing to the lions at the Gabba the next week.

2005-9: Back to back prelims in 2005-6 under Neil craig. then 3 elimination finals in 2007-9.

2012: Made a prelim under Sanderson.

2015-17: Finals under an interim coach under scott camporeale in 2015. finals in 2016 and a grand final in 2017 under Don Pyke.

This is not including the crows back to back flags.

Crows have had 4 different coaches in 30 years that have given crows finals runs for 2-5 years in a row.

Lets look at freos wonderful history: of the 25 year in the comp, 7 of those years we have made finals. 4 of those 7 happened from 2012-15 under Ross Lyon. Bag lyon out all you want. Unless another freo coach gets us a flag or even makes a grand final, Ross Lyon will always be our best ever coach.

And no I am not here to Bash our Current coach Justin Longmuir. I actually want J-lo to succeed. The average life span for a Freo coach is 5 years. Freo has had 5 full time coaches in 25 years: Neesham, Drum, Connolly, Harvey and Lyon.

I will stick to my Prediction that J-lo will last around 5-7 years and 2-4 of those years freo will make finals and we will get 1 or 2 finals wins in that period.

Definitely. We finished 2013, 2014, 2015 disappointed but the likes of Zach Clarke, Sheridan, Danyle Pearce and Sutcliffe were playing regularly through that period who are very average footballers. Our best 22 were very good but when injuries struck we had little depth so to finish top 4 three years in a row is pretty impressive.
Look at the players you mentioned. Clarke, Sheridan, Danyle Pearce and Cam Sutcliffe. Sheridan was either pick 16 or 20 in that 2011 draft. So he was the only early pick of the players you mentioned. Clarke was pick 37 in freos legendary 2008 draft. dan pearce was a free agent. Sutcliffe was pick 71 in 2011.

To me Sheridan, Crozier and Sutcliffe were all similar players: Skinny flankers that were roatated in the forward flank, back flanks and the wings

Danyle Pearce was not an average footballer in 2013-2015.

I’d include Suban, De Boer, Mayne (outside of 2013), Mzungu (2015 only) ahead of D.Pearce for being average over that period.

Take the period you’re talking about - not how you remember them as players in general. Everyone tends to be most bias towards what they saw most recently. Given the footy De Boer and Mayne play now it’s easy for people to forget they were close to useless for us from 2014 onwards.
Ok.....

Looking at the stats, Mayne Was serviceable in at least 4 of those seasons. He did kick 196 goals from 172 games from 2008-16.

4 years stood out for me with chris mayne....

2011: 25 goals and 23 behinds from 22 games.
2012: 39 goals and 7 behinds from 23 games.
2013: 37 goals and 12 behinds from 24 games
2015: 28 goals and 17 behinds from 22 games.

Not too bad.

I'm biased because Danyle Pearce is one of my least favourite Freo players ever. Always seemed to go missing in big games. I would have played Clanceeeeeeee Pearce over Danyle.
Pearce was with us from 2013-18. To Me Danyle Pearce was a solid player. Was solid from 2013-16. was phased put in 2017-18 due to playing the youth.

Danyle had a big year the year we played in the grandy
Danyle Pearce was averaging 19.79 disposals a game in his AFL career.

Looking at his Port years. Take away his 1st (2005) and last season (2012) at Port, he was kicking 10-15 goals a year.

He was solid in 2013. Kicked 10 goals and 21 behinds though. In 2014 he kicked 19 goals and 18 behinds.
