What are the odds that Longer gets a game to prove himself and Hickey will get next week by himself to do the same?
Reckon they may have decided we cant get away with playing them both unless desperate, so trying to decide on who can carry a 80% ruck load best.
Hickey proved that last year while Longer was running around at Sandy. Nothing's changed

Webster knows he's a good kick and tries to do too much as a result
I'm watching the replay and I think there is a touch of the 'he looks like a good kick, so why'd he kick to a 50:50/OMG he turned it over' whereas some of the other guys getting pumped up are a bit dicey and so a 20 mtr side chip kick is seen as a win. But I understand the other point: good kicks can be shit kicks (at times). Suckling a good example.

I feel drunk reading this.

Steven 80 , he only played a half didn't he ?
I'm very surprised Webster rated so high, in another quote I said he played so bad he could have played for Carlton, seems I don't know what I'm talking about.
We do have to remember the opposition though , I think most vfl sides would have knocked of them today. Let's see how we go against Sydney.

I thought JWeb was great.

He blew a few kicks but that's understandable in his first hit out for the year.

He's such a tough bastard too. Love Jimmy

Undortunately Acres cemented a spot in Sandy's 22 for round 1. Lonie as well.

I though Webster outperformed Savage & McKenzie & as such is 50/50 for a round 1 start. I think he gets a start against Sydney to secure a round 1 spot. Or blow it.

Steele reminds me so much of Rory Sloane. They both play like maniacs. Close to certain round 1 starter. Stevens 50/50, I'm leaning towards no. I think it's one of Stevens or Steele.

Against Melbourne we'll need to go in tall down back so Brown & obviously Carlisle start.

Hickey vs Longer who knows. It looks as though Longer is currently ahead, perhaps Hickey has had an interrupted pre season & Billy has been off the froffies. I think Longer starts round 1.

Round 1 currently looks like this subject to change after next week:

B: Geary - Brown - Dempster
HB: Webster - Carlisle - Robbo
C: Roo - Dunstan - Billings
R: Longer - Steven - Steele
HF: Joey - Paddy - Mav
F: Gresh - Bruce - Membrey
I: Newnes - Ross - Armo - Gilbert

i think you raise a very important point about the side we need for melbourne. i think having height around the ground and some outside speed will be tough for melbourne to counteract. melbourne have a bunch of very good inside mids but they lack ability to run and spread on the outside. i also think their midfield also lacks marking ability, which is why i think gilbert needs to play with roo. both players can run all day and both are very good marks.

fast forward to week 2 against wce and i think we come up against a side with very good contested marking ability on every line, on a ground thats not as wide but is longer. which means there will be longer kicks down the line. so again i think we need to go in taller

Love Nicky dal he loves the saints!

yeah he's doing a bit of radio and he's still very much a Sainter. Shame he wasn't there to get his cousin over to us at draft time.... Bont goes okay.

Anyone know if the post match pressers are up anywhere for this?

They should have a members exclusive thing if you could find it on youtube somehow I'll link it not sure it works though.

To be honest I'm sick of the Bont talk it doesn't bother me with the comparisons. We have what we have and we will keep fighting like we've always done. Dal when interviewing Richo pre game said "We" included in a question as if he was apart of the club at this time. It was touching. Was good to have Sandy Roberts and Dal.

I'm

hes not the complete opposite in fact there probably closest to like for like in our team. There's a myth that acres doesn't like the hard stuff or that he looks disinterested but there both wrong. A lot of players who have the basketball background look like that. Acres likes to play in a way that avoids contact as most players do. It's actually smarter then going head first and trying to break tackles. However when the time is there he is more then willing to take the tackle he's just good at getting a disposal off with out getting contact . Also he lays more tackles then he gets credit for. I'm not sure how many he was listed as having but from watching the game closely it seemed like 5-6. We still need to give him patience the last 5 games and Melbourne game last year showed what he's capable of. He's only played about 25 games.

Considering Steele played the majority of his TOG in the midfield and as an inside mid and Acres played the majority of his time on the forward line it’s a bit hard to compare them in this game. Also Acres looked like he played a sweeping role at the stoppages whereas Steele played the inside role. Therefore, they played completely different roles and positions so to compare their games is a bit silly to do.

But anyways let have a look at their stats.

Steele played on ball and for his efforts, he got a good amount of possessions but no centre clearances all day and only 1 clearance from a field ball up/stoppage. He got 1 inside 50 and 8 tackles. Did 3 clangers and gave 2 free kicks away and no rebounds 50 from defence and got 2 goals.

Acres played the lass 1-2 minute of the first 3 quarter in the middle and the started the 4th in the middle and appeared to only play as a midfielder when Jake Stevens came off for a rest and the rest of the time was basically playing off the half forward. For about the same TOG Acres got 15 possession which is less than Steele’s, but was at 100% efficiency with no clangers. He gave no free kicks away and for the short time, he was on ball he got 2 centre clearances and 3 field clearances compared to Steele’s 1. Acres put the ball inside 50 three times and had 1 rebound 50 also. His tackle count was lower than Steele’s at 2 but from the game I saw him make a number of tackles that weren’t given to him which shows he was still aggressive towards the opposition.

So when you compare them Steele gets lots of ball which he should as he played in the middle for longer but didn’t really do anything speacial with the ball. Acres played forward and a small time in the middle and did more and was cleaner with the ball than Steele. Possession are not everything, it’s what you do with the ball when you get it that counts.

K. Stevens had more disposal than ACRES did also. Looking at his stats he efficiency let him down today. He got 5 clearances and 6 tackles and 1 inside 50 but was messy with the ball at 68 % efficiency.
