What is the job? The thing all employers are looking for is someone who can add value to their bottom line. That is to put it bluntly some one who can demonstrate how they will help the boss make a profit. Ergo demonstrate the skills you have related to the job and come up with answers that relate to how you add something, a skill that will generate an income for the business.

Even if it is in the Public Sector while maybe not profit generating they are still after value. What do you add?

If the interviewer is like most out there they will ask the same lame questions and ask about personal experiences or try and trip you up. Give as specific example as you can and try and relate it back to how you can increase the profitability of the business.
 
I've had a ton of interview over my time.

hear are some tips.
1. Be Calm- talk smoothly
2. Know your Resume like the back of your hand so if any trick questions come up- refer to resume which should be inside your brain.
3. if you have had a few interviews you get used to the same questions that pop up, like for instance.

What are your strengthen and weaknesses-( hate this question with a passion)
Give examples of a time when blah blah blah
whats your desire pay rate
OH&S questions
Provide a time when you work in a team.

Group Interviews- usually they give the group a task to do while they take notes.
you need to be involved but at the same time not come across as a aggressive knob- they are my least favorite interview process because a lot of the time they miss out on good quality people that don't speak up in them, because they have respect and manners not to just shout over people so they miss out on the chance to get involved by the overbearing people.- its very competitive.

This is piss poor advice :P:P:P
 
My last interview they asked me what my biggest weakness was

I told them it was honesty

The interviewed said he didnt think that was a weakness

I said I dont give a f***what you think

Not my joke but I like that it makes a mockery of the question

Ive always wondered how an interview would go if you answered these questions how majority of people actually want to answer them, for instance

What are your strengthen and weaknesses-( hate this question with a passion) - Are you seriously asking me that? Ok my strengths are I'm patient with people my weaknesses are I'm probably always going to be 5 minutes late

whats your desire pay rate - My desired rate? A ****ing million dollars. I'm willing to take as much as you're willing to give me, tell me your max, and thats where I'm at
OH&S questions - I'm safe, yo, but I wont sook up about a loose cord.
Provide a time when you work in a team. - When I worked in a team at my old job. We got the job done because the tasks were pretty simple and we all knew what we were doing, probably could've done it on our own.
 
I would rather not list the specific job, but it partially involves sales, and there is a lot of interaction with people involved. I am a great peoples person and know how to build rapport very well.

I think one on one interviews I will be fine, I know if I make it to the final stage there is a group interview which is the only thing that I am partially worried about.

I am also great at bullshitting and telling people what they want to hear.
 
Past ensuring that you have the relevant qualifications and experience (which should be mostly covered by your CV), most employers just want you to show that you have three things:

1) Good awareness of the job's requirements
2) Good awareness of your own capabilities
3) Good interpersonal skills

Someone who knows what's expected of them, knows what they're good at and what they suck at, and can deal effectively with other people is a long way towards being hired.

Will brush up on 1) more thoroughly closer to the interview date.

2 and 3 I have absolutely nailed. Very good with people of any age.

Then you're perfect for sales. At the end of the interview, just casually slip in that everything you just said was total bullshit and you should be rewarded with the gig right there on the spot.

Do your research on the company and try to mention something about them in your answers. Also talk yourself up but the number one piece of advice I can give is to never outright lie. If it ever gets discovered you have dug yourself a hole you can never get out of.

Our entire office recently got made redundant so I am on the job hunt and I hate interviews with a passion. Same questions are always asked so it appears that whoever has rehearsed the answers the best gets the job and often skills are overlooked.
 
I'm transitioning career as well, sending off applications for various APS positions, but still have a couple months until I leave my current job.

Mentioning you are transgender is always annoying, especially if their questions are backwards. But the current agency I just applied for apparently has a mission statement of a just and inclusive society, so that thesis will be tested. Generally people like me are far better off in APS, the private sector is more hit and discriminating miss, to the point where I probably wouldn't even mention it unless there was a 'is there something you haven't told me' type question.

I partially lied on my resume, nothing major. I would never lie about something that is major, I think white lies are okay.
 
What's the go with group interviews? Never heard or experienced them, are they common in specific sectors?

What do you think is the most important part of this job? Closing the sale and providing the customer with a good experience etc etc. they will/should if they are any good ask questions that confirm the following.

You are an extravert but can be polite and relate to customer demographic.

A problem solver with an eye for detail

Tenacity and enjoyment of selling

Be able to deal with idiots and know when not to go too hard.

A lot of the emphasis of these traits will be guaged on how passive or in your face the industry/employer is regarding sales, so some research may be required. So you may get sotell me about a difficult xyz and how you solved it; What do you enjoy about job xyz - dealing with people and if appropriate closing the deal. They should tend to like positive happy go lucky personalities so you can show that in body language, speech and there may be some questions about it. Finally language is important, clear, concise and no crap.

Or they could have no idea of what they are doing and ask some questions with no idea why, and pick someone they like. There is also tendency to pick a male/female of the same demographic who won't threaten them personally.

Partially sales. So something like marketing. PR, sales? I see basically flat out they want results. You are basically the most important department of a company as without selling something no money gets made. You could have the greatest invention/program/product of all time but if you can't sell it it is useless.

Come up with a strategy of how you would sell the product and work it in any which way you can. I'm sure they will crap on about character, culture team values etc but ultimately results are what counts. Best analogy I can think of is an AFL draftee. Sure team fit, values matter but if they think you are the next Ablett or Franklin you could be a hard core drug addict and it wouldn't matter.

Basically show them the highlights reel of your past history or figure how you will sell/promote/establish the product. While it may be tempting to bullshit and easy, real pros can spot it a mile off. Basically you need to think how you would achieve great results and bring money in. Focus on that and build in your sales pitch/strategy to any question.
