I am really excited about what this guy could bring to the club. Won his clubs Best and Fairest at senior level and by all accounts is a super athlete, 6th in the beep test and up there in the 20m sprint at draft camp. Obviously there will be plenty of work for him to do with adjusting to new surroundings but there seems to be plenty of potential and Wayne Hughes may have picked a real gem late on. Guess only time will tell.

I have found a transcript or something Joe Anderson:-

MELINDA JAMES:
At only 17 years of age, Joe Anderson is already a tough defender.
Known for his reliability in the Buffaloes back line, he shone in this year's NTFL grand final.

JOE ANDERSON:
Yeah it was just the best feeling after the grand final.Just to win it and especially against Saint Marys.

MELINDA JAMES:
The teenager ended his first full season playing at the top level of the NTFL with a swag of awards - buffaloes best and fairest and rookie of the year and the NTFL's Rising Star award.
The grand final saw him pitted against one of the best players outside of the national competition and this year's Nicholls Medallist, Heath Culpitt.

DAMIEN HALE:
Joey played on him and played very tight. I think that that's one of the things that we probably don't get a lot of in the Darwin footy competition - a lot of tight hard marking and 1 think that impressed everyone that was there.

JOE ANDERSON:
Sport's 90% mental so that's one of the things I've picked up from one of the coaches in the past years. Just the mental side and just keep on pushing.

MELINDA JAMES:
Joe Anderson displayed the same determination throughout the season.
Only 16 years old at the time, he showed his ability to get on with the job after this mid-season clash.

TONY FRAWLEY:
Joe's one of those players who has a go at every contest. That's what I like about him. If he's beaten to the contest, he's up and at it again. He's just an outstanding competitor and that's very critical if you want to go on with your football - to have that competitive desire.

MELINDA JAMES:
The chief executive of the AFLNT Tony Frawley has been spotting and nurturing talent for the AFL for 20 years.
He says these days, recruiters are looking for more than just football ability.

TONY FRAWLEY:
Their off ground work, their school work, their attitude to their family, you know their leadership ability. They must be very coachable. You know when I first started in football, some kids would get through purely on ability but not these days. There's a very scientific approach to drafting now, where all the draft camps, where all the testing's done, both psychologically and physically as well. They need to be so coachable these days and have the right attitude. You know if they're a little but overweight or they're not committed solely to every training session well that obviously gets back to the AFL clubs and they will put a red line through that player.

MELINDA JAMES:
There's no doubt playing in the AFL is Joe Anderson's dream.
He comes from a long line of territory footballers.
His grandfather Jimmy Anderson was the last 17 year old to win best and fairest for the Darwin buffaloes.

DAVID ANDERSON:
It goes back to their grandfather because he was a bit of a legend for Buffaloes and a life member for the NTFL.

MELINDA JAMES:
Joe Anderson is one of eight kids.

His father David Anderson says the whole family shares his son's dream to play at the highest level.

DAVID ANDERSON:
It would be good for us and his grandfather and the whole family I suppose and make a lot of people happy, especially himself because he's sort of come a long way from it. Like when he was living in Katherine there he wanted to be a footballer and I hope he goes a long way.

MELINDA JAMES:
This year Joe Anderson will have his chance to show recruiters he's AFL material.
He's been named captain of Territory Thunder - the under 18's representative team bound for the nationals in Melbourne in late June.

JOE ANDERSON:
I got named captain and I was real surprised because there's other players there that could take the leadership role. Yeah it was just a huge shock to me.

DAMIEN HALE:
He's very popular amongst his peers for all the right reasons. I think they all respect him and the job that he's done playing seniors at Darwin initially and playing for the territory last year and the year before, they do respect him for the fact that he's a hard worker. You know, he's not popular because he goes out and yahoos at Casuarina after school. It's because he's committed to his footy and we asked a couple of the other guys that we thought were maybe in contention and they all said Joey, so that was good enough for us.

MELINDA JAMES:
Joe Anderson knows that playing well at the nationals is his best shot at making the draft.

JOE ANDERSON:
I'm hoping that I play good in the lead up games and have three consistent games in the nationals.

MELINDA JAMES:
It's a lot of pressure though?

JOE ANDERSON:
Yeah there's heaps of pressure involved.

MELINDA JAMES:
How do you deal with that kind of pressure?

JOE ANDERSON:
Oh you just sort of, just don't take note of the pressure and just focus on the game.

MELINDA JAMES:
Joe Anderson is in his last year of school at Casuarina Senior College.
He has to balance study and training sessions five nights a week.
But his strategy is simple - stay focussed and continue to gain inspiration from his idols, like Saint Kilda star Nick Riewolt.

JOE ANDERSON:
Yeah Nick Riewolt. He just keeps putting it all in and he's real young and one of the greatest players. Andrew McLeod because he's a great idol and he's just done so many things that you only could dream of. Brett Voss because he's like a back line player and I just follow all the back line players.

JOE ANDERSON:
AFL is like my life basically and without footy I just wouldn't have any fun.

If his attitude & work ethic are any indication, this kid could prove to be one of the best finds in the draft. Sounds like he is totally committed. Kudos to Wayne Hughes.

Certainly looks like he has the tools to become a pretty good player at AFL level. He certainly impressed me at the Champs earlier this year!!

Joe is a champ, nice bloke, and very decent footballer. He is extremely fit and is tough as nails. Nice size and as much as people have put question marks over his kicking, he has improved it by a fair bit over the last 6 months.

Goodluck to you Joe.

Thanks for the info mate. As I have said, I am a huge fan of this selection, have had my eye on Joe for quite a while. Well done WH, I am fully behind you with our picks.

Hopefully we see Joe quite a few times in the Navy Blue in 07, and many more times in the future.

Grunt, leadership, desire, height, reasonable skill, reasonable speed. Beautiful prospect.

He’s very passionate about his footy and is a real level – headed bloke off the field. I rate him very highly and IMO, I think he will play AFL footy next year.

Carlton nabbed a few gems this year IMO. Well done :) .

He should definitely play some games for us next year. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for that, although our selections have already been met with quite a bit of criticism, I am confident that we selected very well.

Appreciate the comments. I hope he does well. I think the general consensus is that Hughes took some risks in this draft. With many picks he had the opportunity to take the safe choice, but instead went for the player with more natural ability, that needed more development. Time will tell whether his choices were the right ones, but Hughes has a great track record at Carlton and Freo. There is also a pretty strong emphasis on character with our recruitment decisions nowdays, no doubt motivated by some infamous recruits in the recent past. From all reports Anderson has a great attitude, in addition to his natural atheletic ability. Hopefully he can take the net step. :)

Anderson at #67
Benjamin at #51
Austin at #35

Three very good gets IMO.

Just what we need another hard nut defender and throw in the fact that he is aboriginal you can bet he has some flair to go with his hardness, ala Pickett or Wirrapanda except Joe is much taller than the other 2 that are both under 180cm, we might just have an aboriginal version of another Christou, Kouta combination with him and Benjamin playing together throw in Walker and Betts and we have a nice Aboriginal quartet of excitement machines to boost membership and add pace through the lines.

I was originally hoping we would take Djekurra or one of Jetta, Collard or Proud but i am more than happy with Benjamin at 51 (a bargain) and Anderson at 67 another possible master stroke. More than happy with Wayne Hughes selection's in the national leg of the draft, now for the rookie and pre-season legs. Leigh Adams is a must at 1 in the rookie draft.:thumbsu:

Now there is a blast from the past, he was on the Carlton list for a while young Heath Culpitt:D

It looks very likely that Carlton made a decision not to draft guys around the 180cm mark, as the shortest guy drafted was Gibbs, who is around 187cm. IIRC, Carlton have about 5 players either on or under 182cm (Murphy, Betts, Blackwell, Stevens and Scotland). We need some players with a bit more height, and this is what they have done.

Gibbs at #1 was a steal...:D :thumbsu:

I agree. Number #1 picks that good don't come around that often. He's already been playing senior footy for a couple of years, and is still only 17. Looking forward to Murph and Gibbs firing out passes to Josh and Fev in the forward 50. Also hoping Bryce kicks 3 or 4 against the Crows. :)

Why limit it to 3 or 4? :D

Joe gave him a ********ing bath! Heath Culpitt is also an absolute monster. Big and tough. Joe tagged him in the midfield the whole game, Joey was racking up the possies as well. When Heath was trying to push Joey round Joey was giving it to him.

What position do you think he will end up playing?

How many games do you think he can realiatically hope to pay in 2007? Is 5 a realistic target?

A good friend of mine who is coming aboard BF shortly as disel95,lives in Darwin and has been watching the NTFL very closely for many years. He assures me that we have picked up a player who if he can have a strong pre-season can start round 1 in the BP or HBF.He definately has the size and speed to do so and the grunt that we lack.He tells me that Anderson reminds him of Andrew McKay.

IMO he will be a backflanker for most of his career with little stints tagging someone on ball.

5 sounds about right. Maybe more depending on injuries obviously.
