With the age of some of our players and injury concern, is he an option just for one year, for depth if anything else

haha im glad u do then

but hanging around facebook and being negative about everything isnt my ideal way of enjoying life but each to their own

Sri Lankan Cat i think you need to take a good hard look at yourself.... Joel Bowden?

I could list about 50 reasons beginning with just 'A' as to why this is not going to happen.

We may as well get Shaun McManus out of retirement :)

I don't even have a facebook profile

oops i mean big footy :D

Nah what im saying is, whilst our premiership window is still open it would be worthwhile looking at an experienced defender just for a year. In case Scarlett or Taylor go down next year it would be good to haev a backup. As maligned as Bowden is he is an all aussie player.

I think Harely and maybe Milburn may retire at the end of the year so it is an option

I'd rather get games into the likes of Laidler and Gillies than draft a bloke who can't even get a gig for Richmond nowadays.

Assuming Geelong don't have Milburn, Harley or Egan next year, it's time for Gillies and Laidler to shine. Throw them in, see if they sink or swim. If they respond positively, the Cats will still be in contention in 2010. And even if they don't set the world on fire, it will do more for the near future, to ensure that they are back up thereabouts for another crack while the Corey/Enright/Ling/Chapman crew is still about. I don't mind Bowden, he seems like a terrific person and still a reasonable footballer, but I have no idea what the 2010 version of him would offer our senior side.

That's a fairly irrelevant argument - its been almost two years since Egan last played, Harley has spent most of the year on the sidelines and Milburn's output is already lessened. There will be nothing new next year in this regard.

Milburn - Scarlett - Gillies
Mackie - Taylor - Enright

With Wojak and Kelly also in the mix there... I'm not sure where we are going to slot Bowden in?

This is not a new suggestion SLC, Over the last few months people have floated the idea of signing every retired player they can get.

Bomber has a youth policy and I don't suspect this will change. Unless Wells can find a gem like Harry Talor or Stokes again wasting away in some state comp.

I mean as a backup player :)

im not at all sayin he would be in the best 22!

Bowden is not for us as a player. He has however survived 13+ years at the Tiges ( a tough ask for most). He has retained his ability to work hard, think hard and maintain his values.

I know the tigers have recently been labeled as having a losing culture (a motherhood statement!) but this bloke could offer a lot as an assistant coach much like Sanderson. If Hinkley goes he might be one to consider to add to the coaching staff.

I disagree. In fact, it's the only reason the OP has brought it up. Do you think he'd be talking about Joel Bowden, if Harley and Milburn were three years younger? Those two are in our best 22 at the moment and there's a fair (Milburn) to high (Harley) chance they won't be there next year. Therefore, the question is raised: should we bring in an experienced backman? I don't think so, we've got youngsters that need gametime and if we did bring in a defender, it would have to be an absolute shut down type player, not an attacking defender.

he would kick 2-3 goals a game as a forward. thats the only reason i would want him.

We have enough forward options with Gamble, Djekkura etc.

I think funnily enough our defecne is the biggest worry in the coming years...

just think, if Milburn and Harley go, the young guys are gonna struggle. So whilst the premiership window is open getting an experienced defender wont be a bad thing...not necessarily Bowden, what about Maguire, i know he has been mentioned before...

Our forward line has young guys coming along. Its our defence which will be stretched. We have been spoilt in defence the lsat few years!
