No-one is saying that the contract is awesome Kev.

It is more about taking a player, even though he has complicitly expressed his desire to play elsewhere.

Especially someone like Anthony.

I only really threw that qualifier in there so that nobody would try and bring up the misinformed and fatuous "we have more cap space, front ended contract rah rah rah" misinformed argument/pissing contest.

I know what you're saying and in theory, you're right. But there's no coercion behind this gentlemanly convention. It's basically just good manners to put a player's wishes above what your club wants. We all know that the pre-season drafted is intended nowadays as a restricted form of free-agency and we all hope that deep in the bowels of AFL House, Vlad and his pet snake Anderson encourage clubs to observe this. But there's two clubs who have deliberately put themselves into a position where they have the power to break ranks and there's no good explanation for why else they would have done it. If the Meter Maids and Hird's mob didn't want to make a play for one of the uncontracted players, why wouldn't they have just taken another swing in the national draft?

I'm not so worried about the Bombers, like Dolphin said, they're probably after Bruce anyway. But the Gold Coast... they're a different beast. Vlad wants them to win games and win them straight away. He's already shown that he doesn't give a stuff whose toes he has to tread on to give them that chance. Do you think he's got the intestinal fortitude to try and talk them out of it for the sake of the player's wishes? Do you see the Gold Coast playing nice when they could sure as hell use a young key forward with a big body and a sprinkling of experience at the elite level?

Just saying, I don't trust any of the relevant parties in this transaction.

And you better have read my fine literary work this time ya grumpy old bugger. None of this too long business... ;)

Brad Hardie reckons the same thing that there is no certainty of Anthony going to Freo.

Tl;dr

nah:D

I know what you are saying, and I do agree that Vlad could let that ranga bitch McKenna be a snake in the grass on this.

But again I reiterate, that JA is already well known as a different type of cat. And different types of cats who are pissed off by being shafted are not the types that you want in a club.

Especially a club that is massively overloaded with impressionable wide-eyed kids like GC.

I fully realise that McKenna is a dribbling, sycophantic moron. But I am unsure whether he is THAT stupid.;)

I will look like a prize imbecile, ( and not for the first time:mad:), but I am supremely confident that JA will slide to us.

I think that a few of us have been polishing the alfoil hat a touch hard.;)

So if the situation arises that Gold Coast or someone else does take Anthony before us. What is our backup?

We now have a spare spot on the list that we need to fill.

Hopefully we can pick up someone like Ed Curnow if we don't go for Anthony. Maybe Myles Sewell.

If we were worried about Carlton snapping Anthony up I think we can stop worrying about that. They are loaded for talls now. The main risk is Gold Coast IMO. West Coast won't take him now they have Darling.

If someone does nab Anthony from us then we will select Matthew Little from Williamstown as a backup plan.

if im not mistaken, the PSD is as follows:

Suns
tigers
bombers
Hawks
Dockers

I think thats right ^^^^

The big ?? is the Suns IMO. Have stated they would be interested in Anthony and he fills a need for them. They won't go a mature ager as they could of snapped them up for free before the draft. That the Suns have stated interest in Anthony AND did not choose to use their last pick makes me a little worried.

Suns - Anthony or Bruce??
Tigers will obviously go Houli
Bombers - a mature ager. Either Sewell or Curnow
Hawks - possibly Sewell or Curnow or Bruce?
Dockers - Anthony - not sure what our backup is if the above are gone and Suns take Anthony. Matthew Little, Jarryd Blight? Can we take someone who slipped from the main draft like Zac Fitzgerald?

I think all the ND nominees are automatically in the PSD?

Not many people took live picks after we passed on 72 ... so we wouldn't have gone that far backwards (maybe a dozen picks), and at that point everyone would have a completely different list of who they rate anyway. So basically we can pick Anthony, or pick whoever we would have at 72.

GC passing on their last pick doesn't mean they won't go a mature ager like Sewell or Curnow. Their last pick they passed on in the ND was the last live pick, so it is effectively the same as their first pick in the PSD, only now they leave their options just a little bit more open.

I too was worried/intrugued when GCS passed. I immediately assumed they were after Anthony.

But as someone on DL pointed out, they may just be after Nathan Ablett.

As this article states, he's no shoe in, but it could still happen. GA might have insisted on it!

Nathan Ablett GSC profile

One can only hope. I'm confident Anthony is ours.

Gary Ablett did say at the draft that Nathan was going to train his guts out in the next few weeks to try and prove he deserves a place on the list.

They could have selected Nathan Ablett with their 10 previously nominated for a draft/previously listed player rule. Fingers crossed they want him and he's trying to put his head down to show he can make it work.

I think they're going to take Nathan in the Rookie draft if they take him. They really need a Sewell type though so wouldn't surprise me if they went for someone like him in the PSD. If they only have kids bodies in the midfield they're going to get smashed.

I reckon Hagdorn called McKenna and asked a few leading questions then published the article. We should still get Anthony.

Surely GAJ told them Nathan better be playing. It seems somewhat of a smokescreen saying he has to train hard and prove himself, odds are they'll pick up a second Ablett. Its not like Nathan can't play, he ain't no superstar but more than handy and proven at AFL level.

Why would you "save" a pick from the Draft so that you have one in the PSD? Surely only to select a player (eg JA) who is not in the Draft, not Curnow or Sewell. Sure we may take one of them if JA is already taken, but I could not see GCS taking one.

Gav - they do also have another week or so to pick pre-listed players - like an Ablett or even someone delisted at 3rd list lodgement - so they could just be that they are leaving their options open.

I'm not only talking about GCS. They may have more options than other clubs (I thought their window for pre-listed players had closed), but for clubs like us it is basically a mechanism for recycled players, not for players who did not get drafted in the main draft.

at first i was not fussed either way on Anthony at Fremantle. However, I increasingly feel that with a further collection of footballers with "elite" foot skills, the plan is to use Anthonys goal accuracy after receiving pinpoint passes.

Make a strong lead, defender can't defend against the precision kicking and Anthony converts. Game over!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that Anthony would fit in well to our forward structure, but I believe we have other players just as good who would do just as well with good delivery from the midfield

HA  I've got it.

We might put it out there that if the GC Suns take Anthony, we will have to look at taking a player like Nathan before they take him with the rookie draft.

Gary A. might have something to say about that.:):) It would be a big Stink:spade: if Nathan refused to come here....I honestly don't think we desperately need another pick anyway. I think we will pick a new rookie KPP or two in the rookie draft with a couple of re-drafts..

I was just thinking this ^^^^

If they take Anthony, we take Nathan, If the Bombers take Anthony, we take Neagle. This way we get a leading forward, and deny them the player that wants to be at their club. Not really that much between the 3 of them tbh, excepting that Anthony has more drive, Neagle more physical presence and Nathan more natural talent.

Yeh, the Gold Coast would be really worried about the prospect of you guys taking Ablett.

He simply would not come over to WA and you'll have wasted a PSD and have a vacant list spot. You get that, Abletts stay together in Gold Coast (Nathan doesnt care he if plays AFL or not) and GC get Anthony. Not the best plan for Freo.
