Hopefully this time the thread can stay open because clearly this one is going be a big issue in the next few weeks. Could be the next big thing.

What would your club give up for John Butcher? Please be sensible so the thread can remain open =) Unfortunately Hawthorn just would not be able to play him at the moment but I'm sure other clubs like Carlton, Freo etc would be very interested!

He'll sign at Port.

The articles that were published today basically said, he's staying at Port but gee Carlton could use him.

carlton have paul bower, jordan russell & shaun hampson as i currently see as surplus & tradeable. We will also have our top draft pick not sure what number it will be. No idea why jordan russell isnt playing and he should be, so may have defected to GWS already

This ought to be fun. Carlton fans will suggest Russell, Hampson and the like and try to pass it off as a fair deal but lets be honest here it is no where near the mark. Port which are renowned as pains in the arse to negotiate with would play hardball and demand Gibbs or similar. So no deal will get done.

If he wants to come back to Melbourne I can see Port demanding

Carlton: Gibbs
Pies: Reid
Essendon: Hurley
Geelong: selwood
Hawks: Roughead
Kangaroos: Goldstein
Melbourne: Watts
Richmond: Cotchin
St Kilda: Goddard
Western: Griffen

Now obviously no team will agree to that and as such Port will not budge and guess what Butcher stays at Port.

Any club wanting him would be paying hugely over what he's currently worth IMO. You'd be paying for what he could be in 3-5 years, not what he is right now.

Our Club desperately needs someone like Butcher to help it grow again, so I would doubt some borderline best 22 player plus a draft pick in the high teens/early 20's (in a weak draft) would get you anywhere at all.

I'd suggest that Port would let Butcher try his hand in the ND or PD than to have to accept something that wouldn't help us at all. We dont need anymore average players. We need to start getting some top 20 in the league types once again.

So unless it was a couple of very early picks in the draft (say one in the top 3, another in the top 10), or a player of high calibre incl, then I'd say port would just not budge - and rightfully so.

You'd pay way overs for Butcher at this moment in time.

If his dad says come home...he will leave Port...

Unfortunatley for Port is that he is out of contract, but they will still get a very good deal, should he choose to leave.

Could see the Blues offering up Hampson or Russell + 1st round pick or the two previously mentioned players and no pick.

Very pleased Paul Conners is his manager...Hope Juddy gets in his ear!

If Butcher is out of contract, and wants to leave, then he will most likely go where he wants to go.

Sheedy would jump in to a third party deal to sell his mother.

I hope he stays at Port for Ports sake. We stll have Petrie for 2-3 years, Black who is yet to debut and McIntosh to go forward. Butcher would be nice at North, but a KPF is not essential yet.

You cant be serious? 2 top 10 draft picks with one as low as 3? If Port were offered a top 10 pck and knocked it back preferring to get nothing, then you deserve to get nothing.

Sheedy would never ever do a deal that in any way helps Carlton. Or Collingwood for that matter. Port would rather loose him to the Draft or GWS than trade him for unders. Knowing what Port are like they would redraft him at 4 in the National Draft anyway.

Can see Port telling you to **** off to.

you mean the same Paul Conners who also looks after Andrew Moore, Butcher's best mate

Moore's manager, Paul Connors, last night revealed he would fly to Adelaide today to stitch up a new two-year deal for the first-round draft pick with the Power - just six days after key defender Jackson Trengove committed his future to the ailing club.

"Andrew wants to stay at Port," Connors told The Advertiser. "He's happy there and we've agreed a deal, we've just got to sort through the minor details."

and you mean the same dad

who said
Butcher's father, Wayne, would also love his son to play closer to home, although "it will be his decision", Wayne Butcher told the Herald Sun.

and you mean the same club who has just the past 3 Victorians in Trengove, Moore and Carlile ...

Maybe not, but I reckon Richmond and Melbourne would be at the top of Butchers list anyway.

If it came down to a trade, then North might be in the box seat.

Carlton will provide the brown papaer bag factor.

I don't think he'll leave - how often do players leave after their 2nd year (i know, i know).

If Butcher does want to come home, and Scully goes to GWS, you'd figure we'd be in a strong position to do a trade given we'll have 3 first round picks.

No chance of that getting him if it comes down to a bidding situation.

The Blues can offer what they like. They wont be able to match us in salary as we have two of our highest earners retiring AND we have to pay 100% of the salary cap this year so i'd guess more than $1,000,000 has just opened up for us.

He'd also have to secure a trade to Carlton which would be very, very difficult if not impossible.

Just for fun because I think he'll re-sign and wouldn't come to Perth.

Possible pick 12 + possible band 3 compensation pick (Palmer) and Griffin

to much of a realistic post for my liking. I suspect the Carlton fans with their dreams of offering Russell will be terribly upset when Port don't play ball.

I think Butcher will stay, But seriously? Griffin just came back from Adelaide wanting to live in perth and was happy to play a lesser role and less money, why would he go back to adelaide?

Cap room isn't really the issue. I think both Port and Carlton (and many other teams besides) *could* pay Butcher enough to make him one of the highest earners in the league. Doesn't mean it's a good idea/smart cap management, though.

The Blues need someone like a Butcher. The need someone who is ready to go, and will be good for the next 3 years at least. I don't think he'll be going anywhere, but I'm pleased the Blues are shoving their oar in. There's no doubt he'd make a huge difference for our team.

If he wanted out, I think a deal could be reached, perhaps built around Hampson and Butcher. But these things rarely actually happen.

Anyone else got a KPF they don't really want? Sam Reid? Liam Jones? Nick Riewoldt? Carn, someone give us one!
