This is not sour grapes or looking for any sort of redemption from anyone that has given us a hard time about not having any good young player but Jonathon Griffin should feel ripped off for failing to receive an NAB nomination for his round 8 game against Richmond.

Last night he received 1 Brownlow vote from the umpires last night for his round 8 performance against Richmond. Assuming he was good enough to receive Brownlow votes why wasn’t his performance good enough to gain the NAB rising star nomination?

Round 8 – Shawn Higgins from the Western Bulldogs was awarded this nomination for this round. The Western Bulldogs played against Melbourne, its not like they played a team in super form so saying his performance outclassed Griffin because of the opposition was better wouldn’t come into it. Higgins didn’t receive any Brownlow votes that round

Maybe I am just being a little bit pedantic but I feel Jonathon Griffin was hard done by and should feel ripped off.

So I guess the question should be asked – what would be the best form of recognition for a young player, umpires votes or NAB nomination?

It's interesting. Getting a Brownlow Vote, but not picking up a NAB nomination. If he picked up a vote from the umpires, being one of the best 3 on the field, then you would expect the NAB judges give him seomthing

Personally I dont give a rats toss bag about the nominations, however I dont think he was good enough to get nominated. Yes he showed promise, had a good game or two, but generally the weekly nomination goes to either one who has had a freakish game and if there are none, then one who has shown good consistent form.

I agree, I don't think Griffen deserved a nomination. Of all the rising star nominations, I thought they all deserved their nominations.

I agree about not giving a rats about nominations. However, Cameron Wood got a nomination for a very average game in which he also happened to squib a couple of contests and would have been crusified "Jericho-like" on this board had he been our player. Griffin's game against Richmond was no doubt his best for the year and IMHO, he would have been a worthy nominee for that round.

If Cameron Wood got his nomination for a very average game, there is no reason why Griffin didn't deserve one for that Richmond game.

To me NAB nominations are popularity contest. There have been MANY players over the years that have not come close to getting a nomination but have gone on to have very good to great AFL careers. Similarly, players like David Gallagher got a nomination and he was possibly the worst footballer to ever put on a Crows gurnsey!

Higgins is a better nomination than Griffin IMO...in fact, can we ship Griffo off with Hudson and get McMahon and Higgins in return;) Justjokin'...

Griff should have got a nomination in the NAB cup game where he exited all and sundry!

I lsot faith in the NAB/Norwich award when Johcock started...I belelive he played all 22 games in debut year holding down an important role...Not to mention Ben Rutten...

Rising star award is shite...However I do believe that Pearce deserved it, he played a key role last year....

Looked into Woods nomination, it was in round 2. I'm guessing no one starred that round and since they have to still give a nomination, he was the lucky recipient.

However Griffin was better in his 2nd round than Wood in any of his first 2 games......Maybe the argument should be on round 2 - not 8, not that I care.;)

Conspiracy theory - maybe done to give the AFL more attention in Qld when Brisbane were supposed to struggle?

Ditto for me.

The selectors are clueless.

Higgins kicked four goals against Collingwood in round eight, hence why he got the nomination. He played Collingwood in round seven, when Jesse Smith got the nom for 27 touches and a goal against Essendon.

It's just luck of the draw - only one nomination per round means great games can go unrewarded if there's a better one. Higgins had kicked two bags of three and two bags of two up until that point as well, and a player who has had a run of form is often rewarded ahead of others.

Agreed, I have said it for a while buit I think people overrate Griffin, he played a good game against Richmond grantd but apart from that he never really did anything.

I think people just got so excited about him because people had such low expectations of him. If Meesen or Maric had performed like he did, we wouldnt of been so excited. (apart from Drummond)

I have no doubt that if Griffin had played another game as good as or better than his Rd 8 effort he would have been nominated. Many in the media were suggesting as much. But like it or not he didn't. Even though he had a head start on Maric and Meeson, they both took turns displacing him toward the end of the season. Whether it be soreness, other teams working him out, or some other issue his form dropped and people were screaming for Hudson to ruck the entire match. I for one was surprised by his recall for the Elimination Final. I did't think he gave us much, because as soon as Hudson went off Hawthorn took control.

As for Brownlow votes, they are irrelevant, as they are awarded by the umpires.

Should he feel ripped off at not getting a nomination? He should feel lucky that Maric and Meeson got injured. He should feel disappointed that he let Maric and Meeson get into the team. He should feel disappointed for playing an ordinary game in the EF. But he shouldn't feel ripped off for not getting a nomination.

Higgins had some very good games leading up to his nomination and had a consistent start to the year. He might not have been at his best the week he was nominated, but it was a few weeks coming. Griff's problem was he had the one game but never really backed it up.

I thought Griff was going great and progressing nicely until he did his ankle. He never really recovered from that, him re-injuring it his first game back didn't help. I think from then on he was trying to protect himself and just not playing like he was before the injury. inexperience will do stuff like this to a player, they just don't know how to handle the situation.

As far as the RS goes... Who cares?
