Injury Jonathon Marsh (hamstring)

He is waiting on scans but it was the most pain he has ever had.

Not looking good, if it is the tendon it is not just another hammy. He had made giant strides and if not for his kicking issues would probably have played before year end.

Similar to the Freeman Hammy?

Not sure why this shouldn't be a thread.
Marsh is a senior player and some people, like myself, would like to know these things.

Haters gunna whinge.

Not sure at this stage but to me it looked like it was off the bone, which is worse then Freeman and more like Matty Lloyd.

So if it is off the Bone what does that mean in regards to time out of the game? 8 weeks/ 12 weeks?

Ain't no Marsh haters that I know of here. I want to hear how he is too. His injury was a shame given the guy was proving to be a real find. Hope he is not out for too long. Fingers are crossed.

I'm not sure how you can tell it was off the bone, which would indicate right up near his arse and he didn't seem to grab it there, nor did he grab behind his knee. My memory might be wonky but he seemed to grab it about mid way down.

I think a severe tear ( grade 3?) can be extremely painful. He may also have tendon damage but a severe tear would still be 8 to 10 out anyway.

Where is Swooop ? He may be able to shed light on this.

Jonathon Marsh sounds like a faster Frost

Id say marsh has better skills(still need work obviously), better intercept marking, better rebounding/ball winning(can be inconsistent at this stage) and better run and carry player. Frost is better 1v1 and probably stronger(underrated strength).

Frost would also have a few other features he is better at that i would have forgotten.

I think Marsh is more of a third tall defender where as Frost is suited to basically any kind of key forward.

Matty Lloyd did something similar in r3 2006 and missed the entire season from memory. Pretty sure he needed surgery to re-attach the tendon so if it's similar for Marsh, I'd suspect he'll miss quite a bit of pre-season also which will then set him back next year.

Here's hoping for the best!

Yes I hope this is not the case, thanks!

Thanks@Kirby I've got no deco fix knowledge of his injury at all.

But just speaking generally, a muscle has a tendon at either end of it and those respective tendons join or anchor onto a bone.
When the muscle fibres contract they pull the tendons which in turn pull the bones causing movement.

A tear can be in the muscle belly or in the tendon or the tendon can even pull itself off the bone.

Tears can be anywhere between 1-100% of the full thickness.

You're always better to tear the muscle bit because it heals much faster due to having a much higher blood supply than the tendon.

When the tendon attachment gets ripped off the bone, generally a surgeon would re anchor it back on.

A partial tear of a muscle may heal in a few weeks. A bad tendon tear would take months to heal and reattaching a tendon torn off a bone would involve months of rehab post surgery.

I don't know what Marsh did. But you get the picture that it's just a guess how long he'll take depending in the actual injury.

Then add individual healing rates, add his adherence to rehab, any setbacks re-straining the heading fibres, whether he smokes etc etc and voila - it'll take what it takes!

Overall , most unlikely he'll play again this year as it appeared a decent tear.

Sorry if that's all too basic, I do tend to over explain things!!

Just mean haters in general.... ie: whinging about threads that actually are worthy.

Seriously disappointed for Marsh. Was coming along a lot quicker than I had expected and looked to be developing into an extremely dynamic key back. That's three significant tendon injuries this year... yet another red flag on the capabilities of the Fitness Staff.

12 weeks!

I guess I like that the club was honest about his injury... but it feels a lot nicer when they lie and say 2-3 weeks.

It's an awful injury and I hope it heals well and doesn't affect his recovery in the future.

If there is a positive I guess it's not the worst time for him to get injured that is for sure, I mean in the grander scheme of things.

Well won’t miss a ton of games and Should still have a fair bit of the Pre-Season to train

I must say, these hamstring tendon injuries are incredibly disappointing. I cant recall another year like it, with long term hamstring related injuries. In 2012 we had 4 ACLs, and this year its tendons.

Does anyone know if this injury will impact on Marsh's speed, when he recovers? It is his most distinguishing feature.

The obvious comparison is Nick Riewoldt who did his early in 2010 and really wasn't the same player for that season or the next. By 2012 though, and even now, he still has that speed and ability to run flat out that has been his trademark.

If St Kilda can get him back up and running (literally) we should be able to do it with Marsh.

And we only have to wait 2 years. I might be dead by then. :(
