MELBOURNE'S Nathan Jones has been elevated to Co-Captain and will join Jack Trengove in the role whilst Jack Grimes is sidelined with his shoulder injury.

Colin Garland has been elevated to the role of Vice Captain.

Jack Grimes will be placed on the Long Term Injury List and will miss a minimum of eight weeks.

Melbourne Coach Mark Neeld said “We see our captaincy as a shared role and with Jack Grimes sidelined for a minimum of eight weeks, this is the perfect opportunity to give Nathan Jones and Colin Garland an added level of leadership experience.

“Both Nathan and Colin have continued to develop in their leadership skills and this is great recognition of that”

Once Jack Grimes returns to playing, both Nathan Jones and Colin Garland will resume their previous roles.

Congrats to Jones, hope he makes it permanent.

Well done to Garland too.

Congratulations to the pair of them , jonesys should be permanent

Are we guessing that means jimmy magner will play after next week
Depends really. I don't see a spot for him at the moment, but I'm sure he will get his chance. Probably this week, actually.

Congrats to Jonesy. Leadership doesn't require a title; you don't need to be captain to lead, he's proven that, and earned this. It won't change him one bit. But hopefully, maybe, it helps the others fall in line behind him.

If Jonesy was Sole captain, I think more players would go harder. I don't know - I could be way off, but If I was out there watching my skipper bulldozing mofos and getting no support, I'd be the wrecking ball that sweeps through to help clean up. However, if I saw my captain doing Sweet FA - I'd be getting pissed off.

IF we end up with a new coach next year, I think you will find Nath will be promoted to sole captain for 2014 and on or will co captain with Grimes depending on that coaches opinion on co captains.

The right man for the job and will prove that captaincy works best as a 1 man role. A young team needs a simple education and example set for them. A single figurehead for players to look up to. Jones is the only one who can look other players in the eye after a game and tell them they weren't fair dinkum. A struggling 21 yr old isn't close to being able to do that.

We don't have 2 CEOs 2 presidents or 2 head coaches - assumably because it is either not feasible or optimal yet we have 2 captains aged 22 or under because their leadership was above all else's - strange.

About time, few players (Ablett) would have sulked over missing out on captaincy, and considering the context of Melbourne, he has done his club proud by earning his stripes.

Sole captain for 2014.

Happy for Jones to be in the role. As we all know he has a lot to offer.

Talk of demoting Trengove or making Jones sole captain is a completely moot point though. Simply won't happen - not with Neeld at the helm at any rate. The young fellas might be struggling a little but we have to stick with them.

There is some truth to this. Beamers reaction to being ejected from the leadership group proved he wasn't up to the task.

I have always been a big supporter of Nathan Jones :thumbsu: Well done! A worthy wearer of the Number 2.
