It's a fallacy we haven't recruited midfielders

We spent picks 4, 9 and 11 on them since 2018. We brought in Dawson, Rankine and Peatling to play there. And we've found a few with later picks.

We have a very good knack of making these midfielders play poorly. Maybe by coincidence they actually all suck, or maybe we can't develop them for shit

Who did we pick with 4, 9 and 11?!

So apparently we've used 3 draft picks in 7 years on midfielders? You have actually consolidated my post.

Absolute mismanagement with midfielders for decades now.

Enough pissing around the edges bringing in non mids then expecting other players to magically become mids.

Even Dawson and Rankine were not mids when we recruited them.

We need to go out and get a genuine midfielder who has played and will continue to play midfield and only midfield

Um, do you realise you have just completely disagreed with yourself? 🤣

Not really. The club clearly has been recruiting midfielders, they just haven't done a particularly good job at the draft, and their trade strategy has largely been to convert maybe-mid types into mids.

Rankine for example, we clearly saw him as a midfield cog and paid up big bucks for him. If we only saw him as a forward we overpaid.

I can see him dropping the captaincy, but im not sure weve got one ready.
My actual thought is that he will still be captain if Adelaide win the premiership or go close next year. But I don't think that will happen. Therefore next year will be Dawson's last as captain.

And it probably won't be his choice. It will be Nicks' replacement's big statement.

Was reviewing my previous HASHTAG BIG CALLS (c) (tm) patent pending pty ltd. and despite batting .000 I'm prepared to make another one.

2026 will be Dawson's last year as captain AND he won't see out his full contract.
Traded or delisted?

Love Dawson, but we wont be a genuine premiership threat until our midfield is at a point where we're able to play him across half back/wing. Feel like his field kicking regressed a bit this year, and he joined the Laird Academy of bombing high and long.

Traded or delisted?
retired I assume. He'll be 33 by the end of his contract.

but IMHO Dawson's fate is intrinsically tied to Nicks and co. I don't see him having anywhere near the sway or importance once Nicks is gone, particularly as there are players who will overtake him for the title of "best Adelaide player" within one or two years. I think people will be surprised by the rapid drop off of his stocks in coming years.

I think there’s been some unfair criticism of Dawson’s game on Friday.

He was having close attention paid to him all game, and still found plenty of the footy, and took his marks around the ground.

I think he blazed away too often and cost us a goal or two by doing so.

But when you’re getting tagged at every stoppage, and your midfield teammates don’t fire a shot, and let there guys run around uncontested, I don’t know how much you can do and I thought he fought hard.

Dawson is literally the last of our problems.

Did he have a poor finals series? Yes, he plays a lone hand in the middle and the opposition shut him down knowing no one else would step up.

Maybe an injury, who knows.

Recruit some support.
I think I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt for a poor showing in two finals.

The rest of the midfield was absolute balls meaning he was sat on for both games and had to do everything himself.

If you go by AFL fantasy points (puke) he was still pretty much our best midfielder, despite being bad.

It's less the performance and more the context.

He decided to end 2024 spearheading a (failed) attempt to publicly humiliate a teammate for some unspecified reason, for which there could be zero tolerance.

The end of 2025 is him going missing on and off field during assorted crises.

He'd be more damaging as someone who rotates forward if we didn't have so many strong marking tall forwards already. To think we clog it further with ROB too... But would be nice to see him isolated when he's getting close attention as he's a pretty strong mark over head.

Which is another reason to move Tex on

There’s not much about Tex’s role he couldn’t do.
