Sweet trained with Port Adelaide in his draft year for a couple of weeks as part of some academy program. I remember word coming out after his stint that Port were impressed and he was impressed with Port. I cannot recall what happened on draft day but he ended up at WB.

Grundy was a pipe dream with the reality being we don’t have the draft capital and Ruck is not where we want to spend our salary cap. We will have such a good midfield that all we need is a ruck who gives them a 50/50 chance- not a fourth midfielder.

But people should manage their expectations. Like Lycett was 5 years ago, Sweet is an SA boy who is a lumbering type ruck man currently playing second fiddle to a mobile ruck man (Naitanui = English). The major difference is Lycett was a premiership ruck man and had played more AFL. Sweet 2024 is probably inferior to Lycett 2018 (or whatever year he came).

The other issue with this is that how do our tall backs and ruck men bleed for the club on Saturday knowing we have already replaced them. All these announcements are like we have already shifted our attention to 2024. FFS we are one home win, an excellent away win and probably a neutral game v Brisbane away from a flag in 3 weeks. Surely we could have asked that these announcements get delayed until our 2023 job is done.
The other way of looking at it is some guys might look at this year now as their last chance for a premiership here and be desperate to prove their worth...

Heard North might be interested in Lycett if Goldstein goes.
Lycett moved to us because he wanted to come home. He’s made his sheets and won a flag. I’d say he’s more a chance to be playing for Port Districts with his mates over Norf.

Fair enough that was my opinion too. It was mentioned on Gettable I think.

Nice to feel wanted but a 26 year old who has amassed 11 games since being picked up at pick#23 in the 2018 Rookie Draft does not exactly fill me with confidence. We would be better off keeping Sam Hayes. Sam has also played 11 games since we signed him in 2017. Jordan Sweet's match day averages are much the same as Sam Hayes' figures.

I am obviously missing something as Jordan Sweet looks like another player for Ken Hinkley's 'won't get a game' list. Are there two Jordan sweets playing AFL?

How does a player with 11 games in five years qualify as a 'gun'.

Kind of funny grundy going to the swans leaving ladhams in limbo

I suspect Pete had his off field issues but I would be having a dead set go at enticing Peter Ladhams back. He is light years ahead of players like Jordan Sweet. I suspect Pete had his differences with the hierachy at Alberton and instead of working to resolve the issues Ken & Co said we don't need him.

Also an avid Bays supporter and has publicly expressed his John Olsen level of hate towards Port Adelaide. So let's not call the soon to be new ruckman Gary.

Gary Sweet played Reserves footy for the Bays. Ironically Sweet's first major TV role was playing a character called 'Magpie' in The Sullivans.

He's the best ruck in the comp at VFL level and was behind the AA ruck for AFL opportunity this year.
Not much forward craft but he's AFL standard and you're getting a bargain here. Play him as a first ruck, and first ruck only. Aggression too. Teammates love playing with him.

I suspect this is a Nankervis type deal where he couldn't get a game at Sydney then flourished when given senior opportunity.

He’s told port districts he’ll be there next year, unless he’s had a change of heart in the past couple of months.

So did Grundy have a change of heart or did we? Seems weird that on the very same day that Sweet requested a trade to Port Grundy decided to go to Sydney. Sweet is a better match, great tap ruckman.

Its not weird. Sweet wanted to see how the Grundy situation played out.

On Gettable it sounded like we said no to Grundy.

Time will tell but probably a smart move not to take the 30 year old ruckman with a 4 year contract.

Maybe, but for Sweet to request a trade yesterday we’ve been talking to him for more than a few days. Grundy was never a fit, Sweet a great match.
I mean we would surely be talking to more than one person. You don't just put all your eggs in one basket.

I think Jordon would understand being a second priority to Brodie Grundy. Seems very standard to me.

With the timing the way it was we obviously approached both. I love that no one in the media had a whiff of Sweet coming to us until he aske for a trade.
"VFL player Jordon Sweet might go to Port Adelaide if they can't land Grundy" isn't exactly a front page story. There are probably hundreds of discussions at this level happening. Like I bet we have multiple backups to attempt if we can't land BZT.

Its being reported now that its actually coming to fruition.

I’d also heard we said no to Grundy. I don’t think he’s a fit. I like Grundy, but when he was on Insta the other day asking what colour scrunchie to wear I struggled to see him in our side. And that’s not a reflection on my thoughts on him it’s a reflection on our very meat and potatoes team.

Ollie wines a shoe-in for top 10 in the bottom 50 this year mof?

Gives me Jarrod Witts vibes.

Given limit opportunities after being stuck behind a top ranking ruck at one club. Matures is the reserves and seeks a trade.

Big lump of a lad that can dominate hit outs while still get his 15 odd disposals. If he can have a second half of his career similar to Witts, we will do very well with him.

So with Jordan, we will have the best ruck in the VFL, to go alongside Hayes if he is kept on, who was the best ruck in the SANFL a few years ago.

With one forward pocket taken, does the other play in the back pocket?

Good get though, I rate the synergy he will have with Carr and Rozee.

Sweet sounds like he would be a very handy pick up, playing 2nd fiddle to an AA ruck doesn't exactly suggest he belongs on the scrap heap, plus he's the right age to take his game to the next level as most ruckmen don't show their best until their mid 20's.

Lycett probably won't be at Alberton next season, but I wouldn't be against keeping Hayes to give Visentini more time to develop as I believe he has the athleticism to be more than just a ruckman.
