He absolutely does look promising.

The main issue with North's list is that they'll need a few years of picking in the top 5 or so to accumulate elite young talent.
There is a huge difference between young talent and elite young talent.

The Saints have a bright young list, but lack elite young talent apart from Billings and McCartin, and will subsequently find difficulty taking that next step.

Clubs simply must invest in elite young talent by way of top 5-10 picks.

In a year where Dusty goes from great midfielder to top 2 midfielder in the league and Prestia (9th OA pick) is added to the squad, what happens to Richmond?

Carlton needs another year or two of this before a sustained climb of the ladder occurs.
High draft picks dont build lists. development does. Ben Brown was pick 47.

Paddy McCartin is elite young talent? concussion aside, he hasn't shown anything.

Lol come back to criticise when you develop a squad that challenges. I never said they were good, i said they are developing. Each has shown promise but a long way to go obviously.
Every club is like that. Richmond under Terry Wallace had a couple of players who shower promise but had a long way to go. Unfortunately they never got there. Nobody has a clue where North's list will be at in 5 years.

You strike gold extremely rarely.
Good luck building a premiership-calibre list with flukey hits like that.

McCartin will struggle to reach his full potential due to his frequent concussions and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, which is unfortunate.

The signing of Dusty was apparently North's intention all along.
Kelly was supposedly always the end game, they now have 2.5m/year to offer him.

What? We got played? Those sneaky sons a bitches. GWS better watch out. You're dealing with some whiley wheelers and dealers here.

no he is not. get your facts right.
My mistake less then 2 months older, but point remains that Brown isn't the best young KPF in the league.
Both Lynch and Daniher are better.

You know whats not rare? top 10 picks being complete busts.

Sydney Swans are one of the most intimidating teams going into finals and haven't shown any kind of rebuild in over a decade. Heres why:

Parker - pick 40
Hannebary - Pick 30
JKK - pick 40
Sam Reid - pick 38
kurt tippett - pick 32
Jake Lloyd - Rookie Elevation
George Hewitt - pick 32
Nic Newman - Rookie Elevation
Heath Grundy - Rookie Elevation
Kieren Jack - Rookie Elevation
Tom Papley - Rookie Elevation
Nick Smith - Rookie Elevation
Dane Rampe - Rookie Elevation
Will Hayward - Rookie Elevation
Dean Towers - Pick 22
Harry Cunningham - Rookie Elevation.

Or Sydney are just really lucky....

Lance Franklin - top 5 pick as FA.

Or Sydney are just really lucky....

And they would've faded into obscurity if some top 5 pick hadn't propped them back up.

Fixed your post.

The adelaide football club dont have a top 10 pick on their entire list.
We have 'flukey' picks everywhere.
Development is crucial for a young player.
Weve built a premiership calibre list through great development and solid recruiting.

Bingo. Swans can say the same as can a few others.

North being impatient.

It'll be an interesting finals series for this reason, will Adelaide's model come through with a premiership?

Hawthorn's success was built on early draft picks, Geelong's was built on elite father-sons and a few early picks.

North supporters have always overrated their younger players. I've been told for years that Urquart, Bastinac, Delaney, Black, Anthony and Ziebell were guns who would be future stars of the game. Now they've all been delisted or traded to other clubs for a George Clooney Fantale wrapper.

to be fair, those are pretty valuable

A couple of freebies in Heeney and Mills didn't hurt either, not to mention the best free agent in the game in Buddy Franklin.

Mills and Heeney were both top 3 picks in an open market.

Freebies help.

Apart from the mini drafts..
Which they traded a late first rounder and pick 11, to be apart of?

They had the foresight to get involved by taking a risk. Point stands. Adelaide don't have a top 10 draft pick on their list.

Development > recruiting personnel > splashing the cash for the right free agents that add value > bottoming out.

Freebies? Lol no.

Hey GG, from what Afl.com is saying. Josh Kelly might make his way over to Blues

Would this trade scenario satisfy the Giants in your honest opinion? Trade b/w Giants and Blues only

Josh Kelly & Matthew Kennedy for
Blues #3, 2017 Draft
Crows 2017 First Round Pick
Crows 2018 First Round Pick

North Melbourne no way could offer Giants something as good as this for Josh Kelly and Matthew Kennedy

Draft picks are talked up more than ever imo to try and create another money making avenue for the AFL & more football related jobs in the form of talk shows/draft night hype ect ect and it's completely based around following American sporting ideas which seems to be a common theme trickling down from the AFL over the past decade or so, personally i hate it.

Top draft picks over a long period have largely been overrated (Top 10 specifically) yes there is talent but many other factors come into play once drafted that go in to creating/becoming a good player.
The best clubs for the future are going to be those who trade well while spotting the diamonds in the rough as in my eyes there is a growing number of ''Destination clubs" where success has been shown and things like quality of life (City you want to live in) attracts more talent.

Id be willing to bet that you wont even get 1 of adelaides 1st rounders. Let alone both

Paddy McCartin is elite young talent? concussion aside, he hasn't shown anything.

He's played 20 games.

About 25% of which he's been knocked out or broken something.

I have no clue if he'll ever do anything of note or not, but the point is it's way too early to tell either way.

You putting a line through brayshaw?
