Sylvia got suspended. Him spitting the dummy only occurred in your imagination. BTW the guy he hit also got suspended. Probably retaliation rather than the dummy spitting you imagine.

Simpson wouldn't have done anything tonight. Three game players wouldn't have burst apart that game. Or maybe they would've. I don't think a skinny forward pocket or winger would've though, and that's not putting down Josh – that's just how it goes. Simpson's issues are totally redundant and unimportant to that loss or the one against the Swans.

There are plenty of guys who did play that game and against the Swans to berate. Plenty.

All he would of had to do is touch it 5 times in our forward half and kick with his usual precision to be in our bests tonight.

Hope the selfish little $%+ is happy tonight
Lyon should be ashamed he dropped him and kept that completely useless crab Suban in the side.

Part of being a coach is man management. And he kept a shit footballer in at the expense of one who had played a good game and could have reasonably expected a follow up. Yes, Simpson shouldn't have dropped his head, but at the same time the coach should know the temperament of his players and who responds to what encouragement. Omitting the guy who ended up being the sub against Sydney for Simpson would have cost the result in the Sydney game how?

This rests on the coach.

So its Lyons fault Simpson is soft and should HTFU?

Seriously dude. I would have loved to have him out there but in AFL you can't crack the shits an not turn up because you thought you should get picked.

Club would have been crucified in the media had we picked him this week

Couldn't agree more.

Yes.

I have managed people who are near virtuosos at what they do, but prima donnas when you criticise them. The smart thing to do is tread lightly. Talent is almost impossible to replace.

I have blundered my way into criticising their work and realised almost too late they have method to their madness. It takes a lot of "digging up stupid" to correct mistakes as a manager.

There is nothing wrong with the club's response to Simpson's behaviour after his meltdown, but the dropping of him after the Essendon game was pretty questionable, and if it led to the situation the club is in now, then it is the coach's fault.

As Harry Truman said, THE BUCK STOPS HERE.

Lyon thought he didn't deserve a game or he wasn't up for it, not Lyons fault- Josh's. You don't just go out and give players games because you don't want them to spit the dummy.

The fact that Lyon didn't think he was worth a game speaks volumes about Lyon. He was excellent in the half he played and could have been used in that role again. Instead the sub role fell to that eternal dud in Suban.

Lyon's inner conservatism made that decision - not based on talent, appreciation of player sensibilities, the long term future of Freo, etc. Just a belief that the role player Suban who ticked all the KPIs was better suited to AFL football at that moment. It's a very dry way of looking at things, and it's what works for Lyon, but it's not necessarily the best way of doing things.

But maybe he thought he didn't have the tank or the frame (small, congested ground) to be a starter in the Sydney game, no doubt I would have preferred if Simpson didn't spit the dummy and replace a dud in Suban for a quarter or two. But why gift games to players who haven't worked hard enough when it can destroy the fabric of our on field culture- 'work your way in and work your way out'- something Josh needs to be told again.

the silly thing is Simpson would had had a high chance of being selected again this week or aganst Sydney had he been able to play, Sylvia as well could have been very valuable to have at this point.

Maybe, but unlikely. It would seem that when Fyfe and Mayne came back Simpson and Crozier were next cabs off the rank. Don't be surprised with Ballas back next week if it's first in, first out again. Ross Lyon backs in those who meet certain fitness and game plan benchmarks above all else. Expect Sheridan or Crozier to be dropped for Ballantyne.

A handful of players proved themselves unsuitable for AFL footy in the two games since the Essendon win. Maybe Lyon is correct and this is a reflection on poor depth. Or maybe he is backing in the wrong players.
