Missed a plane myself for work. Got a lecture, well deserved, from my boss and go on with it. Yes it's grounds for discipline but not a stand alone firing.

Additionally, if you delist him now all you do is remove one player from your options. You don't get to redraft in the middle of the year. Over reaction for mine. You loose nothing by spending the rest of the year trying to work it out. There is no additional cost involved from a club perspective. He either comes good or not. In either case there is no need to rush a decision. As RTB alluded to, the club will support him, because that makes the most sense. They may still turn him into the next SonSon. From a club perspective there is nothing to loose.

Of course that wont stop the moaners from saying we should have picked player X.
Yep. There's a whole year to work through it. Not worth throwing away talent and two preseasons worth of investment to prove a point about team discipline.

On a positive note... Imagine the story it will be if he comes back later in the year and by some chance contributes to a freo 2014 premiership :D

I'm guessing that you weren't very good at "join the dots" as a kid.

You've got it all there in writing from your own keyboard, but you can't, or won't, make the connections.

its pretty clear I would have thought. Unless you want to say that being soft is a cultural trait?

Freo 5 points down, 30 seconds on the clock, Simpson quick hands to Morabito 60 meters out, it's a huge 60 metre kick on the run, sails through Freo win on the siren. Premiers !!!!!!

Yeeeeehaaaaaa

You could argue though that letting Josh go would be beneficial in helping to ensure no player would consider spitting the dummy at the club.

Cue Nicnat text message story

You forgot about Colin doing the team thing by giving the perfect shepherd to allow Mora the time to kick.

Name us a single player on our list that would look at Josh's situation and think "well that went well, maybe i'll try that too.."

??

Colin Sylvia would just about be dumb enough

But if Josh gets away with a slap on the wrists maybe some other younger players in the future years might not fully appreciate the consequences of such or similar action. Its about creating and maintaining a hard but fair culture.

Might not be smart enough to think that.

Yeah, but you also don't want to force one of our talented youngsters out of the door. He is a good kid by all accounts, and he is a ripper of a footy player. He just needs to adapt to the routine of an AFL footy players life (no small thing). He stuffed up, nobody is going to argue that, but I'd say the club will extend him every opportunity to redeem himself.

You said it, and this is exactly the kind of culture being fostered by the club today. The players have never had it clearer what is expected of them. There's a polar differential from getting a slap on the wrist to being fired, you can be rest assured neither will be the end result, with the latter being a last resort.

I wouldn't suggest that anything less than being fired is a slap on the wrist though.

Whatever peoples thoughts are about Ross Lyon, the one thing I don't think he's considered is soft on discipline. It'll be more than a slap on the wrists

Speculation about specifics is futile until the facts of the no-show are known, it serves only to rustle jimmies.

Clearly Josh has buggered up and some form of punishment is required. However, from Lyon's press conference, it is clear that the club will be considering all aspects of the why - cultural issues included.

If any club can work through this and produce a good AFL player and person, it is this club with its Lyons and Walters.

Yeah fair enough, perhaps being banished to the WAFL so he can seriously consider if he wants and can commit to the routine. Was trying to play devils advocate to clogged who said theres no point in throwing a way a key player to prove a point in discipline, when its really about a medium between the two.

True story.
Was in a big rush to meet a crazy deadline. One of my guys at work did not turn up for 2 consecutive days. Couldn't get hold of him by any means. Was really pissed off but can't do anything about it.
Guy turned up for work the next day. Acted as if nothing happened, but did his best to catch up on what he missed. Had a chat with him and found out his father had health issues and spent 2 days in the hospital. Was there anything holding him back to call in and let us know? No.

Was I pissed? Yes.
Is it wrong for him to skip work? No way!
Is it wrong for him not to call in? Yes.
Was I still pissed knowing what happened? Not with the no show. I would have done the same. Yes for not letting us know so we can react.

In the end, gave him a reprimand and let him know we are disappointed. Is it a big deal for his no show? Yeah. But it's never that big a deal that we'll even consider letting the fellow go.

Back to Simpson.
A reprimand and a slap on the wrist is probably in order. Calling for delist or long suspension is way too much overreacting.

I guess there is some sort of fight going on internally between the key people about the approach to take. Someone big might be calling for his head. Seems over the top to me if so.

I think the club will give him an extended break from all forms of footy so he can go back to Yalgoo ,spend some time with his Grandmother so she can get him back on track hopefully .
His extended family will be the force that gets him hungry or he will tender his resignation its that simple .
Walters , Johnson ,Hill ,C Pearce , D Pearce , R Haden and all the boys at Fremantle can only do so much its up to him now .
