Don't nominate for the draft. Problem solved.
I think the best thing that a club can do right now with the system that we have is to pick the young Aboriginal boys up as a rookie. We would have them on our list and basically have a couple of years for them to be in the system and see how it works.
Hell, there's a thread on our page talking about bringing WA boys back from over east as some of them might be homesick.
The US has the college system to see if kids have the development to cope, the AFL has very little, we are drafting 17 year olds from the desert and transplanting them straight into 'the system'. A few camps and speeches from ex players isn't really a good preparation for this type of life change.

Not sure about automatic rookie listing as that would be considered discriminatory, and rightfully so.

Where do you draw the line between a Walters and a Simpson for example?

I am more for the system in the article, and you kinda endorse, with an emphasis on bringing boys into a better funded Clontarf type system where education for a 15/16 year old is more the focus and football is a priviledge. Bring these boys in far younger and acclimatise them to the systems, weather and cultural differences, basically.

To see the young boy from Halls Creek quoted in the article depending on his parents finding $10,000 a year is disturbing when you consider the circumstances up there.

The same twaddle some in this thread carry on with as regards to Aboriginal players from remote areas is suspiciously like the twaddle the old fossils in the VFL used to bang on with as regards to ALL Aboriginal players 30 years ago. Jimmy, Phil and Maurice blew the bloody doors of that particular sh*thouse of stupidity and you'd have to think it's just a matter of time before an Aboriginal player from a remote area becomes one of the superstars of the game. Every chance he's already at the FFC wearing #14.

Thought the same to be honest. You'd hope there is some kind of government grant or subsidy that they're able to access.

Maurice Rioli was from a pretty remote area himself.
I wouldn't call Melville Island and Darwin remote compared to Yalgoo or Nookenbah.

Interesting that there were 8 Rioli brothers. Most came to Perth and all but Maurice went home after short careers or before they played a game.

The older Sebastian played for quite a while.

Why can't we just draft a player at his value and face the challenges as they present themselves with the best tools we have at the time?

In this case the old adage of Proper Preperation Prevents Piss Poor Performance rings true.

We need to get these kids early and help them in all facets of their lives, whilst still respecting their culture and identity as they develop into adulthood and football.

Good to see Walters support him, & tell it like it is.
Or is he being racist by calling up a slacker?

Deliberately being an idiot doesn't make you any less of a one.

You and I both know that you aren't coming from the same position.

You have form.
