"Footy can be everything, but it's not everything … and you should never forget where you come from. As long as they've come out of footy with something, made friends, enjoyed what they've done and done the best they can."
Isn't this the most important quote? Isn't this why plenty of guys can't be bothered with the AFL? I don't get it. Who are a bunch of arseholes on a forum to denigrate Simpson's or anyone's character if these are the things they feel – Simpson obviously doesn't forget where he's come from and seemingly won't stop thinking about it. It's not his fault – it's not even a fault. If the typical AFL hard-arse lifestyle isn't his to be had then so be it. I don't know if he'll ever come back to Freo or not, I'm sure the club'll patronise his issues and bridge the two distinctly different worlds, but to berate the guy as lazy or throwing something away... It always seemed weird to me.
I agree. But just to play Devil's advocate; before they put their name in the draft they should think about what is expected of them if they're drafted, because no one forces them to be on an AFL list. And of coarse there should be more AFL aid in determining if it's the right option for them. And then helping them adjust if they're drafted.
The AFL really is behind in this issue.
