Livewire forward Thomas appreciative of his second chance

Collingwood livewire Josh Thomas joined SEN’s Time On with Sam McClure to talk about his fantastic season and his gratitude for the second chance the Pies have given him.

Thomas, who spent two years away from the game due to a suspension under the AFL’s anti-doping code, has been excellent up forward for the Collingwood Magpies in season 2018, with the 59-gamer kicking 32 goals so far.

“The way that we’re playing as a team has helped out. There’s a few other guys in the forward line who’ve kicked a few as well,” said Thomas.

Despite the exuberance of the Magpies small forwards, they couldn’t get the chocolates on Saturday against an unstoppable Richmond.

“We weren’t quite good enough. We know we’ve got a little bit to work on.

“The overriding feeling is if we get a few little things right, a few of the basics… we feel that we’re good enough to beat them, we just have to get a few little things right."

The Magpies didn’t just lose the match – talented defender Matthew Scharenberg suffered his third ACL injury and won’t play again this year.

“It’s a pretty cruel game at times. He’ll come back better, no doubt.

“When he first got to the club he had a similar injury to me so I spent some time with him.

“He’s such a great bloke, you really feel for him.”

Thomas had a well-publicised break from AFL football as a result of an AFL-imposed suspension. Thomas was found to have taken the banned substance clenbuterol.

“I was up in Brisbane for 18 months. Couldn’t be further from the AFL in many ways. There were probably times, on a day to day basis, you didn’t know whether you’d get back.

“I just needed to get away from Melbourne, from footy, and just be a normal 23 year old.

“I had Lachie [Keeffe] as well. We’re good mates as well so that was really helpful.

“As [returning to AFL football] got closer, that fire to get back just grew and grew.

“As soon as I got back, I couldn’t ask for a better transition. Just welcomed back to the club and put everything behind me. I’m certainly more grateful and appreciative of the opportunity I’ve got now.”

“I’m just trying to put it behind me and make the most of my second chance.

WHEN Josh Thomas trudged to his customary position in the Collingwood forward line for Saturday night's semi-final against Greater Western Sydney, a familiar face awaited him.
Lined up in the Giants backline and ready to mark his best mate, there was something fitting that it would be Lachie Keeffe standing by his side for much of the match.
"It's been a lot of hard work and it hasn't happened overnight. It's been a slow grind, but I've enjoyed this whole year.
"The guys have been awesome to play with and the club is just an enjoyable place to be around. That's all you can ask, to enjoy your footy.
"Obviously it helps when we're winning, but from Monday to Friday, to come in every day has been awesome."
In a significantly smaller Collingwood attack, Thomas has thrived. Combining a role on the forward flank with stints through the midfield, the 26-year-old has turned into one of the club's most prolific goalscorers throughout the season.
One of just seven Pies players to have featured in every game this year, Thomas' 38 goals ranks him third at the club – behind only Jordan De Goey and Will Hoskin-Elliott – and 15th in the competition.

Just reread the first couple of pages, a lot of us including me got a lot wrong.
Was a good move by the club bring him back, though not as harsh as others were on him.
Really thought keeffe would be the one to stay long term.
Well done Josh, hard work you did has payed off

Lover that interview. Sounds a really balanced human

Lover that interview. Sounds a really balanced human

Agree.

I guess all footy players will go through what he’s gone though ...

... having to come to terms with not being able to play footy any more. “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone” and all that.

JT has had the bad/good fortune to go through that process mid-footy-career, which would give him a healthy perspective.

Great interview. I agree, he does. Good on him for seeing his mistakes and moving on with life.

Exactly. It's good that he saw that.

Oh never mind.
I suppose I best not respond to that implied attack.
Some posters are allowed to bait it seems.
Funny, I know your view on Thomas, heard it before, yet you’re allowed to repeat it?
So much for “poster first, mod second”.
Hollow ring to that assertion.

Where's your big boy pants?
I was having a bit of fun - as a poster.
Sorry if I offended you.

Had a poor game last week before finally showing some life in the last quarter.

His season last year has gained him some credits in the bank but like Varcoe he needs to improve on his performances to date if he wishes to keep his place in the 22.

From a normal poster, just a harmless jibe.
From a mod.........a pointed threat.
Seriously.
That post was from September last year!
It wasn't a threat, merely a request, (hence the use of the word please).

Not a great game, but no-one pushing him out just yet. Needed to move the ball on more quickly against Saad, and when he gave away the HTB free he needed to do what WCE do so much better than us... sit on it, lie on it, roll around a bit, slowly hand it back after staggering toward Saad like you have Parkinsons...
