Can't believe the number of free kicks that he doesn't get paid that are there.
Symbolises our club.Incredible what he can do with one arm constantly being held.
Can't believe the number of free kicks that he doesn't get paid that are there.
BRISBANE Lions forward Josh Schache has played more minutes than all but 40 AFL players in his first season.
He is also the only first-year player in the top 100 players for minutes played until the end of round 16.
Schache has played 1702 minutes in 15 games, having been rested for round six against the Sydney Swans and then getting a break because of the bye between rounds 14 and 16.
Brisbane Lions high performance manager Damien Austin said Schache's achievement was unusual and his progress was being carefully monitored to protect his long-term interests.
Although Schache was noted for his aerobic capacity during his junior years, Austin said everyone was aware of the big step up to AFL.
"We probably didn't anticipate him playing so many games and we're really conscious of it," Austin told AFL.com.au.
He said a big percentage of Schache's training load was coming through games and the education he was getting playing senior football was invaluable.
"It's a massive learning curve and he has been put in the deep end," Austin said.
"We're very happy with where he is at and what he is doing. We're confident in his ability to run and run out games."
Despite Schache's outstanding resilience, teammate Daniel Merrett, Austin, player welfare manager Craig Lambert and coach Justin Leppitsch were having frank conversations with the youngster to ensure he was right.
The club also has objective markers to measure his capacity.
"Needless to say we may have to rest him again before the season ends," Austin said.
The 18-year-old has kicked at least one goal in each of the past six rounds for a total of 16 goals for the season, while playing on some of the game's best defenders each week.
Comparable key forwards on emerging lists such as Gold Coast's Tom Lynch and Greater Western Sydney's Jeremy Cameron played 13 and 16 games in their first AFL seasons in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
The next best first-year player in 2016 is 21-year-old Adelaide forward Mitch McGovern, who has played 1509 minutes in 16 games to sit at 153rd on the list of minutes played.
Joshua Schache has been a prized recruit for the Lions, currently the team’s leading contested marker and equal-third goal-kicker in his first year of AFL.
He's a workhorse who has played more minutes than all but 40 AFL players this year (as at Round 17) - making him the only first-year player in the top 100 players for minuted played until the end of Round 16.
So it was fair game when he was rested last weekend against Essendon but can he bring it this weekend?
BRISBANE coach Justin Leppitsch says Josh Schache is whacked and his team should already be stacked with a priority pick.
Lions young gun Josh Schache will miss Saturday’s clash with Carlton at the Gabba and will play no further part in the season after succumbing to a heavy workload in his debut campaign.
The 18-year-old was the No.2 pick in last year’s draft and kicked 16 goals in 17 games when he covered team-high kilometres and attracted more defensive attention than most first-year players.
“He won’t play again this year. He’s done enough” Leppitsch said.
“We’ve put a lot of weight and load through him this year and it’s a bit unfair on the youngest player in the comp.
“At one point I think he was top-10 in loads in the competition before we rested him last time, so that’s a fair weight for a first year key (forward) to handle.
“We thought as a club it’s the right move with him. He’s been terrific this year for the group and he’s given our supporters some hope.’’
19-year-old Josh Schache received the Rookie of the Year Award in recognition of his promise as a key forward for the Brisbane Lions. Schache kicked 16 goals in 17 games.
The Brisbane Lions' landed their preferred man at the 2015 National Draft, taking Murray Bushrangers’ Josh Schache at Pick No. 2. He had an impressive debut season, playing 17 games and winning the praise of AFL commentators. One of his best games came in Round 13 against the West Coast Eagles where Schache had 15 disposals, 9 marks and kicked 2.3 in a strong display.
Coach’s notes:
Josh Schache in his 1st year at the Club, played 17 games and kicked 16 goals and 18 points. He had 34 shots on goal in 17 games so was kicking two a game. Schache finished equal #1 for contest marks and won the Club’s best 1st year player for 2016. He basically took the best defender every week. It was a credit to him that he was able to maintain a high standard, another who has a big and promising 2017.
Excellent first year for the key forward, who despite copping the opposition's best defender and being starved of inside 50s, showed he has the strength and work ethic to make it. Played 17 games and kicked 16 goals before being rested late in the season.
Games: 17
Goals: 16
Has anyone heard of any news regarding an extension for Schache? God I would hate it if this lingered over the off season and into next year.. Forgive me if he has already resigned!
