Understand if you guys don't want to discuss Judd but was hoping someone may want to provide some views re my question.

Very happy with him thus far. Obviously not up to full fitness yet but in general has been really positive for Carlton. One thing though is that he seems to be putting very little speed into his chasing of opponents.

I am figuring this is because he is pacing himself until fully fit. Question being was he equally fast in chasing when he was fit at West Coast as he was when he was running for or with the ball?

I think defensive pressure is so important all over the ground and am expecting that Judd will be great in this area once fully fit.

It'll never happen.

Never ran as fast chasing.

Runs at warp speed with the ball.

Judd has never chased much really. I remember listening to the radio once and hearing the commentators say how unaccountable Judd is, at the time i thought nothing of it but looking back he is a bit unnacountable.
Its certainly a part of his game he needs to improve.

Who knows? The WCE team he shat on included Kerr and Cousins and so was a blatently offensive unit.

The ultimate defensive player is one so attacking and dangerous, that other players sacrifice their games to stopping them.

judd NEVER EVER chased, which was the one thing that pissed me off when he played for us.
P.s: Was at Karrinyup today and in the centre they were selling framed memorabilia. Anyways there were 3 Eagles items one of a signed Judd guernsey, one of a signed boot of Ben Cousins from his comeback game last year and the other was a Judd + Cousins Brownlow piece. What a kick in the gutts. I wanted to spit on them. It was sad.

he was usually top 5 in our tackles every year. more of an in tight tackler, no point in him chasing the other way. just a waste of his energy.

So you want AFL's #1 player to help you defend? God you blokes are shocking!

For $1.2 million a year they'll want him to kick goals, lay tackles, pinch hit in the ruck and take Pratt's daughter to her school formal.

I think you got the msg eh, Judd does not like to chase, he can tackle but won't run far to do so.
Give him the pill and it's a different story. But on that I don't think that he is the fastest out there but more smart in his direction change, I remember seeing him run down a few times by the opposition and thinking "man I thought Judd would out run him".

he's an awesome tackler

I think most of you boys are still way too bitter and twisted.

Judd is one of the best tacklers in the game. Without looking up his stats, I am sure he would have been in the top 5 every year he was here for tackles and smothers.

They're not really talking about tackling, more so running back and chasing. Occasionally he will, but he prefers to let someone else do it. Which I never minded.

He chases Rebecca pretty fast, but when it comes to blokes he would rather be chased then rammed right up the clacker with a sherrin - watch out Carlton, Judd is actually gay, thats why cuz went on drugs and kerr started bashing blokes, they were jealous.

Yep I remember thinking the exact same thing.

Without any bitterness he really did used to leave that job for other players (mostly).

He was highly rated in that aspect as a junior - Wisbey said he was "Very accountable. Fierce tackler."

Now, he doesn't really need to do a lot of chasing as most the time he has taggers playing on him who have low offensive hurt factors (i.e. Baker, Rawlings and co.)/are so preoccuppied with limiting Judd they sacrifice their own game. Even when he's gone head to head with another attacking mid I can't recall anyone clearly beating him, let alone beating him (maybe Goodes once).

Hey Tony... Nice to see you on out board :)

Anyway to answer your question chasing was never really the thing that Judd did best having said this he is a very good tackler and whilst he does not chase it is by tackling around stoppages that he applies defensive pressure.

It is important to recognise that as other posters mention that more often then not the players that played on him were there to negate him and therefore he seldom really needed to chase.

I guess this is one area that he may need to improve though to be honest I would not lose much sleep over it if I was Carlton.

You rightfully point out that defensive pressure all over the ground is important though also it is also important that players on the ground need to have specific roles and stick to these. In my view the role that Judd is best suited for within your (or any clubs structure) is to be an offensive weapon, break the lines and try and get to as many stoppages as possible. The way he should apply defensive pressure is that, when the opposition team takes possession from the stoppage, he is there to lay a tackle. This he does very well and is one of the best in AFL at doing (when fully fit).

If he is to perform this role as efficiently as possible then it may not be in your clubs best interest for him to engage in continuous long chase efforts (it is in such situations that teamwork and communication is super important so that another player may chase instead.) Do not get me wrong I am not saying that he should give up on a chase but he needs to exercise judgement as to when to and when not to chase. And his teammates need to exercise judgement when to let him go solo and when to help him out.

smart post TBU- his lack of chase is probably due to his direct opponant sitting on his hip at all times not worried about getting the ball themselves.

Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated. In general they seem very honest and informative.

Wonder though if he may have to put more emphasis on the defensive side given that Carlton are likely to be without control of the ball more so than the West Coast sides Judd played with. Also we don't have too many fleet of foot mids to chase down opposition.

Thanks,

Seems like a pretty good group over here. Didn't expect so many responses most of which seemed very honest and helpful.Seems like most rate his tackling highly. Have seen evidence of this already. His speed even with the ball still seems a fair bit restricted but has picked up steadily each game.

You guys are most likely right about his opponents being negative although aganst the Dees his man picked up about 30 possessions. I think my main concern was that on a few occassions this season he has been the closest Carlton player to an opponent with the ball and he has jogged rather than chased. Really thought this was due to his rehab but seems as though it may be something that has always been in his game.

Not trying to knock the guy as already he has proven his worth. Just that if Carlton are to get any respect in the short term they really have to be thorough with getting the best out of everyone on their list.

Its been mentioned already, but on those rare occasions that an opponent decided to go man on man against Judd, rather than a negating tagger, the Eagles invariably backed their man. With the Eagles having had a strong defense for some years now, the implication from the Eagles was "Right, if you dont want to tag Judd, thats your choice. When our defence rebounds the ball, Juddy will be standing all alone, and we bet our boy will do more damage than yours will".

Like everyone else, I dont remember Judd chasing a lot, but he tackled with the best of them in close, and thats where his game was.
