It's never been a problem.It’s always a problem when shorts don’t match jumpers. GWS for example. Hawthorn’s yellow jumper with brown shorts causes similar problems. So did North before they switched to a blue home jumper.
There are 2 ways around it - either the away team wears neither colour, or when necessary the home team puts on shorts that match the jumper.
Either Carlton wear red so Geelong can wear white and navy, or Geelong wear white shorts so Carlton can wear all-navy.
Given many clubs get way fewer opportunities than others (looking at Geelong, for one) to wear their home jumper - purely by how it is, no blame here - if changing a pair of shorts means both teams can wear home jumpers then bloody do it.
