THIRTEEN AND CLOSING
Great to read, but as far as the No.17 goes. IMO Newman is doing a very good job and should be left there until he decides to pass it on. Let's allow Cotchin to get through some footy games for a few years then visit that path.

I understand cotch has alot going for himself! But the pulling going on over this guy is unbeleivable. Still has alot to prove and it looks like this is the year for cotch. But people, please, keep ya hands of it.

best part of the article right here

He is a player in a hurry. He owns the house where he lives with his partner, Brooke. He has a cute samoyed puppy, Kuda, and has helped Brooke set up her new child-clothing importation business, Kids Revolution, which has helped his own thoughts turn impatiently to becoming a parent.

more Cotchins please.

No rush IMO.. Although since Day 1 at the club, he has looked like a leader..
I have no issues for Newman to hold onto it for another 1-2 years and then evaluate from there.. Newman needs to bring us through the dark times, as he is a strong character off the ground and shows the young players how to attack the ball on the field.. Perfect for a young team IMO..

Agreed, especially when people are so quick to rip into Vickery for not showing anything in his limited time. Cotchins played 50 games for us and is still relying on potential to get him through. We still have to baby sit him through pre-seasons and i'm sure this season he will have another set of injuries that people will use as an excuse for his mediocre play.

In my opinion the pressure is on cotchin this season to show some consistently good footy, particularly with Dustin Martin showing him up.

You can read it in the article and see it in person when you meet him, just a truly good, modest bloke. Most of the 'pulling' you see is people wanting people like him to succeed, it reaffirms that feel good notion that good guys finish first. Ultimately a captain I think but Newman is doing a brilliant job at the moment I'd say, heard from multiple players the words "best captain in the league"

No doubt he will be our next Captain but no immediate hurry... let it happen in a year or two.

I was a little marginal on Newman a couple of years ago but the way he handled the whole Wallace implosion with stuff going on with Ben Cousins as well... with a very young group getting belted week in week out well... that's what real leaders are made of.

Newman would be hugely respected and admired by the Tiger players and that would include Cotchin as well.

Let Cotch stay fit for a season or two, prove to all of those doubters out there who are asking him to show something that he is the real deal, and then he can take the Captaincy as a 22 year old as we enter finals calculatoins in say 2013.

This guy will go down as a Tiger legend! :thumbsu: (Yes.. I know... it is IMO)

I agree with the posters who say the guy still has to prove himself. So far, he's an average mid-fielder in a poor side.

I read another thread on the site where a Bulldog fan over-rated Griffen, and another poster referred to Griffen's 'eternal break-out season' - it still hasn't happened. Well, that's where we are with Cotchin (and right now, he's nowhere as good as Griffen).

I am very hopeful - far better judges than me or any other BF poster rate him very highly. But the kid still has a long way to go. And his history shows he's fragile.

Give him the captaincy but piss off this no 17 crap, retire the jumper.

Its a bit of a old tradition in aussie rules to give the captain a certain number (usually number one) whereas retiring a number is a yankee thing .

Lets stick to our own traditions thanks.

Sorry wallaby but this constant thrown out line is just absolute B/S , his Achilles related injury was/is a body developement issue , nothing more nothing less . Once through it there is no suggestion that it will re-occur or have any long term effect , like strains or dislocations !

Great article!! I figure leave Chris in the possie he's doing a great job. This leaves Cotchy time to get consistent and mature more as an AFL player then consider it. Just as a side note there was another article in the age I think saying something like Carlton leadership forget how difficult it is to win flags wthout rorting the salery cap, regarding the whole 2 prem'ships in 5 yrs they've been talking about. OUUCH!!!

EXACTLY! Im surprised you havn't been abused for telling the truth.

It's a tradition for some teams and has been ours for all of about 5 years- where we've seen average Captains like Campbell and Johnson strut around in a number reserved for legendary leadership.

I disagree with having 17 saved for captains (if you couldnt tell already)

-We give our captain #17
-We have the Jack Dyer Stand
-We have the Jack Dyer Medal
-We have a Jack Dyer Statue out the front of Punt Road Oval
-We even named our Mascot Tiger Stripes Dyer

What about the other legends- Bourke, KB, Richo, Barrot, Hart, Roach- the list could go a long way but thanks to All our awards and plaudits going to Jack Dyer the other legends don't get the recognition they deserve.

Furthermore, it means that a new tradition and history cannot be developed for new numbers- think of all the games Newman would have played in #1 that are now spread over #1, #17 and whatever number he wore before Rory Hilton vacated #1.

Must admit, I think I'm one of the few who quite like the idea of giving the 17 jumper to our captain, but the second part of your post here has put things in to perspective. I shall consider it some more :)

Im actually in two minds about the #17 for Captain idea- I do like it but once it's all added into the other things I think it's too much.

Sometimes I feel that we need to create history with player's own jumpers- but now that I see Newman playing well in #17 I feel better about it than the Campbell/Johnson days. Still, I feel we've put all our eggs in one basket and would like to share the love around a bit!

Jack Dyer made this club what it is. Every other legend you have mentioned rates captain blood as the greatest ever tiger.

He was the heart and soul of the club.

17 & Captain - the perfect fit IMO.

When that idiot Ian Campbell was marketing manager his idea was basically to rename the club 'Dyer-town'. Everything became Dyer-ed. Even renamed the mascot!

As a result, the Dyer legend has lost a lot of its relevance - it now seems just a branding exercise. And has been rightly pointed out we have plenty of other legends eho deserve some recognition.

Look I agree, Jack Dyer is Richmond and Richmond is Dyer but at some stage we have to give some respect to our other legends- and naming every single thing after Dyer not only prevents us from doing so but also dilutes the importance of what we do give him.

He is and always will be the soul of your football club. But as i highlighted in your post, he WAS the heart and soul of your club. Every great player to come from now shouldn't be recreated in his image in my opinion. If the captain wants to honour him by wearing his number then he should be allowed to, but if he wants to forge his own way with his preferred number then so be it.
