K Pettifer- Y the improvement

I think it is a combination of a much improved attitude and being given more defined roles on the field.

Young Tiger on quest for salvation

July 8 2004
Shepparton News

Former Kyabram young gun Kayne Pettifer could very well be saving his AFL career with a string of high-quality matches for Richmond this season. But that's not the only thing motivating the young Tiger, as PHILLIP GUTHRIE reports.
Kayne Pettifer knew all was not well with his football at the end of last year.

It wasn't just the stats - 27 games in three seasons - that told him he was in trouble.

He could sense it in the playing group.

"I could tell at the end of last year I'd lost a bit of respect after the year I'd had," the 22-year-old said yesterday.

"Guys sort of thought `Here goes Petts again, not pulling his weight and sooking'.

"This year I've trained my arse off and done everything, and you could sort of tell when you've earned a bit of respect from the group."

With his contract up at the end of this season, Pettifer is no doubt staring down the barrel this season.

It's a long way from 2000 when he won player of the carnival at the AFL under-18 championships and seemed to have the world at his feet after being snapped up by Richmond at number eight in the national draft.

It wasn't long after his arrival at Punt Rd, however, that Pettifer began to realise quality footy careers tend not to happen by accident.

"The last two or three years I was a kid and needed to grow up and pull my head in," he said.

"You come down here and, being from the country, I probably was going out a lot and drinking a bit too much.

"Now when you get told to pull your head in and this could be your last year of AFL football, it really hits home."

A deep and meaningful chat with Richmond captain Wayne Campbell at the end of last season laid the foundations for Pettifer's most fruitful pre-season in four years at Tigerland.

"My fitness was a big issue," he said.

"You can only depend on skill and a bit of talent for so long down here.

"I got thrashed during the pre-season, I put on a about six kilos, was taking minutes off my best times and it's gone from there."

Pettifer was in danger of heading down the same old road after being promoted for the Tigers' round four match against Geelong only to be dropped the next week.

But the attitude was different this time.

"This year when I did get dropped I didn't whinge or anything like that," he said.

"I went back down and played good footy and put the pressure on them to put me back in there."

It has worked a treat.

After winning his recall, Pettifer has found a new lease on life as a defender, playing five consecutive matches including holding Fremantle star Paul Medhurst goalless at the MCG, playing the best match of his career against Carlton with 19 possessions and picking up another 16 against Brisbane in the brave showing at the Gabba on Saturday.

"It's been the most consistent month-and-a-half I've ever had," he said.

"Down back if you've got a job to do you know you have to be concentrating 100 per cent.

"The worst result is them kicking a goal on you whereas in the forward line it doesn't tend to look as bad if it's your man kicking it out."

Pettifer's immediate focus is the Tigers' clash with Essendon at the MCG on Saturday.

However, long-term he dearly hopes to do enough in the remainder of the season to convince whoever might succeed Danny Frawley as coach of Richmond that he deserves a place at Tigerland.

"I've made some great mates here and I reckon we can go places," he said.

"I hope I can play the next eight to 10 years at Richmond Football Club. We have got a great list and, as you saw on the weekend, we can play.

"We've just got to put it together and back ourselves a bit more instead of sitting on the fence like we sometimes do."

Yer, good on the boy , i had him hung , drawn and quartered 18 months ago . It`s amazing the turn around . You wouldn`t have given a cracker for him . I reckon he is just about ( along with Krakour ) the biggest on field plus this year

You could tell from the pre-season games that Pettifer was a new player. He looked much stronger and much more willing to throw his body around. It's good to see that he has started to look like an AFL player after looking like a reject for quite some time.

The challenge now is for him to keep his motivation levels high and continue to put in the hard yards over the preaseason to give himself another opportunity to play good footy.

I'd hateto see us keep him on the list only for him to revert to the pettifer we have all known and loathed over the last three years.

Have anyone else noticed that ,not only Pettifer, but a quite a few of our "duds" have improved mysteriously since Frawley's resignation became apparent.

-Pettifer doesn't bang his fist in his hand when he makes a mistake but gets on with the job.Yesterday he was great I thought, grabbing everyhting that came within his gr5asp and kicking truly.

-Rodan played his best game ever.In and under and worked his ass off.

-Bowden is in almost career best form with some impressive scalps to his name over the last 5 weeks.

-even Zantuck wasn't bad against Reiwoldt despite his kicking 5.

Thought Zantuck was alright again yesterday as well even though Neitz kicked 6. One was from one of the worst free kicks of the season and another couple no full-back in the league would have been able to do anything about.

Good point evo ;) Throw in Schultz who played his best game for the club and suddenly the youngsters are blooming .

Can anyone tell me why they would bring in Houlihan and not have given another kid a go this week?

i thought Houlihan did some nice things today...i also saw he carried out his child to run throught the race(banner) which is usually reserved for retirements and milestones.

I don't think he had a milestone.

If he gets cut it won't be his skills or his class that were the problem.

It will be his lack of ticker , but Geelong found that out 4 years ago

Houlihan is pure class as far as skill goes. But he is a bit lazy. Anyone think he will be at Richmond next year or another club. I was dissapointed when we delisted him in 2001.
