He should kick more, his kicking is actually decent. It's much better than a couple of our players.

His one touch pick ups/interceptions were impressive but for me EASILY his best passage of play was midway though the last quarter where he laid a shepherd on a player about 10m in front of Ablett off to the side so he could run passed, then sprinted 15m down and laid another one on the player that was chasing Ablett.

That's the sort of thing coaches LOVE. I loved it too.

"Gut running"? Give me a break.

Were you there? Because I was, and his running was excellent. His off the ball work in particular was something I didn't expect from him but he did it to put on the shepherd or open space. One of GC's best tonight.

Also from tonight:

His hand speed is very good.
His vision is getting better to the point where he is making smart decisions by foot.
His tackling aggression is elite in the AFL.
His awareness using his body around contests is very good.

The highlight tonight was a play when he had the ball at CHB and then had 3 or so possessions in the chain in to forward 50. Also, in the fourth he ran 50m and put a shepherd on to let Ablett through.

In the last quarter he ran 100m to provide Ablett with a shepherd on Watson and then ran another 100m to get to the contest in the forward half.

Considering players were looking spent all over the field, it's as good a case of gut-running as there was by anyone else during the game and it wasn't an isolated incident.

100m??

Karmichael is never going to be a ball winner, a lock down defender or a marking forward.

What he will be though is a guy who does the small team things that help his team and gives it his best each week. You can't expect him to be anything else. You always need someone like that in your team.

Was at the game tonight and was thinking to myself.. "Jeez we're doing terribly if Karmichael is getting his hands on the ball" but watched him a lot closer and his work off the ball is fantastic. He protects his team mates and he's quite good at crashing bodies and dishing off the handball to the outside runner. Good on him.

Hunt could be to GC what Rooke was to Geelong. Rooke was pretty skilled on both sides and a good all round footballer, so not comparing their skills by an any means, but I saw some Max Rooke in Hunt's attack on man and ball last night. As the 09 QF and GF showed, that can count for plenty.

Settle down, wasn't that great.

Was better than at least 6-7 established Essendon players in his 19th game having played the sport for 2 years.

Was in the Suns best, as accurately listed on the afl.com.au match summary.

I'd say he went pretty bloody well, especially considering the expectations a lot of people had.

Try looking at it with some context. Maybe it wasn't the complete 4 quarter game you'd expect from experienced players, but his 9 possesion second quarter which was a big part of the reason suns got back into the game was impressive.

In a couple of yrs when his base fitness is inevitably better after more pre seasons he'll be a more than handy player.

Did I say he was bad? I just said to settle down, he wasn't fantastic. Conditions suited him as well.

Also in a couple of years he'll be 27-28, doubt he'll improve THAT much.

glad to hear he is coming along well. he was already half way there with his athletic ability and size, it was just a matter of getting the reading of the play and the basic skills down to become a handy player. he's still fairly young and by the time he is 28/29 he'll be fairly entrenched in gcs best 22, if not already.

Have said from the outset that he would be a jet in the AFL.

It was no fluke that he became one of the world's best league players, he had exceptional ability to read the game and he always absolutely worked his guts out.

He is just starting to show that he can clear a path through congestion and deliver to teammates in better position. He will only get better, give him more time to learn the game and improve his fitness and he will be a wrecking ball.

Hunt is becoming what he was hired to be - the midfield enforcer.

He isnt there to get touches, he is there to create space for Ablett and the rest.
