Keep Montagna & Dal Santo

FFS if we are going to trade him can we at least have the guts to play hard ball and demand more than a VFL standard backman and a 2nd rounder?
We can demand all we like but it doesn't mean we're going to get it

And conversely we're not going to get anything worthwhile (not just for Dal) if we show a willingness to settle for weak deals.

If we demand a high price we either a) get the high price or b) keep a triple All Australian player, win/win. What is the point of getting rid of our older gun players if we don't get anything decent in return?

Not very happy with the club announcement. 'No decision has been made to release Nick' doesn't make me feel very confident that we're doing everything to keep one of our best and most durable players of the last decade.

FFS we complain about Ross Lyon's behaviour when he left us, but this is how we treat a club champion like Dal Santo ? Gee, I love the Saints but the current team management... I really don't know ! Demons fans are preparing to ridicule us !

I hope that the club is being open and transparent with Nick, and seeking the best possible outcome for both parties, whether that is a trade or not.. (at this point, I want & expect him to stay....)... but that doesn't mean that their announcements at this point need to be anything. Its not trade time.

I've never heard of Luke Delaney, but, while I'd really hate to lose a player of Dals long servitude and quality, we really need a ground up rebuild, and our backmen stocks are thinner than an Olsen twin.

If we can do a really, really good trade for him and he ends up winning a Flag at Norf while his replacement(s) become multi year solid players, I will be comfortable with that.

Can't let him go for sweet FA like Ball or Goddard.

I agree strongly with keeping both. Scorched earth approach to rebuilding does not work, Melbourne being case in point.

I also agree with both having a reasonable amount of footy left. I see no reason why they couldn't play off a half forward/back flank for a couple seasons after another couple in the engine room.

Scorched earth?

We have Hayes, Roo, Dal, Joey, Fisher, Schneider, Jones, Dempster (2 Premiership veterans) how many veterans do you think we can carry? Just reminding you we ALREADY just finished 3rd last and were nearly as bad as Melbourne. Last year we had even more veterans - So clearly having a bunch of veterans hasnt helped us. We can lose a few and still have more over 30s than any other club.

In any case the Melbourne thing is a myth invented to explain them being shite. The players they lost or 'got rid of' (Mclean, Rivers, Scully, Moloney) werent even old but in the prime of their career.

What we urgently need is good young players. I understand people are sentimental but we need to let go and face the painful truth of where we are at.

All a product of Ross lyons all now nothing for later mentality, and to be fair it came excruciatingly close to yielding a flag.

fwiw i think it was prolly worth the gamble and you guys were definitely unlucky to come up on the receiving end of a close GF when you were certainly the yardstick for the season.

in our scenario Boomers prolly not going to have the longevity to be part of our next genuine window however Wellsy may find himself in a position of coming to the end of his career and possible having pressure on him from list replenishment options.

supporters definately dont want to see loyal champs moving accross to other clubs like BJ did. this is the negative side of free agency.

The Australian today was saying the Bombers wanted Dal Santo. What the bleep would they have to trade?

Draft Picks? Do not have any before the 3rd round

Players? Unbanned ones - Zaharakis or Goddard?

Unless they get Vozzie as their next coach I doubt they would be willing to do that.

So what have they got we would want?

They're probably hoping to tempt him as a restricted free agent (I know, I know, they can't), they'll have plenty of spare dosh when most of their list gets banned.

Will someone with some brains at St Kilds just keep Dal Santo and get it out of the way.

our young guys are still 1-2 years away and we need Dal's maturity and +25 possssions a game to keep us competitive.

FFS just keep him going and make him a 1 club legend.

From what the club has stated it seems to me that they are entertaining trade offers only incase someone offers something stupidly over for Dal, like a top 10 draft pick or top 20 plus required player, otherwise he stays.

Unless Pelchen was lying about not shopping him around (and if he was then we have bigger issues at the club then potentially trading Dal for a good draft pick) I really don't see how the club has treated anybody wrongly in this situation and I still think that Dal will continue to be a Saint.

I'd say the Pelican was lying, listen to Dal's manager on SEN the other week and its clear as day Saints are trying push him out door despite Dal wanting to stay

for the record, what are your thoughts on this?

If we get a good offer, what should the club do? Do we delay our rebuild for Dal or do the right thing by the rest of the youth on our list who want to play finals?

Just wondering...

I don't see how keeping Dal delays our rebuild. I think he is still vital cog movin forward. He has 3-4 years left in him, and by then we'll be challenging again. His leadership around club on game day and during week is vital. The young guys look up and learn from him. Think that is just as important as getting a potential pick 20 kid that more then likely won't make it. (Percentages say they won't)

Only way I'd think its good option is if we get unbelievable deal, eg top draft pick which is highly unlikely.

Team over the individual for mine. As long as we aren't telling all the senior players to basically go **** themselves I'm fine with it.

I wonder that too. He's an absolute gun when played at HB and I'd love to have guys like him, Webster and Roberton delivering out of the backline but once they hit 30 you just never know. Look at Fisher, durable his whole career and the last two years has really struggled.

Issue is that how you treat the individual sends a message to the rest of the group.

I was under the impression that the reason we would not end up like Melbourne is because of staggered retirements and because we would not be forcing veterans out the door.

Time will tell if dumping Heath Shaw and co. was a good move by Buckley and Collingwood. Certainly short-term damage.

Be interesting to see how the Cats handle it too. Gave Taylor the 5 year $3mil deal, still have several others to deal with though.

Jesus, if this move is going to happen, I hope this is the unpopular one Pelchen spoke about and there aren't any more nasty surprises. The Hawks chucked Croad out but they got pick 1 ffs. A low-20's pick for Dal would be an indictment on the club imo

The only thing i would believe that came from a players manager mouth is (i am talking through my own pocket)
I think and hope that both dal and monty will stay saints next year, unless a top 10 pick was involved

I'm with you, Thunda.

I think the thing to realise is, as I stated in the Trade thread (I think), sure we're going to have about 7 vets in 2014... but Lenny, Jones, Schneids, and several others are likely to retire, and we actually don't have that many who are 28 now, who would be good 30yos in 2015.

Do you want our 2015 role models to be Maister and Ray? Oooh...

2015, we could have Roo, Montagna, Dempster. That's it. And that's assuming that Roo stays on in 2015. If his knee is shot and all his mates are gone, he might quit after 2014 with the rest of them. Then, dear friends, we are in the proverbial poo.

It's not team over the individual. That particular individual is a nearly 300 game player who bleeds for the club, is an exceptionally good player who has been dogged by tagging, but is FINALLY at the point where he can play without one, thanks to Steven and others stepping up.

I just see trading Dal as a really, really stupid example of cutting your nose to spite your face.
