Channel 9 news ran a quick grab of a list of players who'd announced their retirements today, and one was former Geelong Full Forward Kent Kingsley.

As much as he was maligned when he left our club would like to wish him the best for the future. He did have a couple of good years at our club.

Awww, I wanted to see him play v. Geelong at least once...

Do think Richmond are wishing him all the best for the future.

I bet they wish they had that pick again.

This was on SEN yesterday.

He basically cost them nothing. If they were where they should have been this year - challenging for finals - he would have been invaluable.

Ironically if he had stayed with us he'd probably be back in this weekend and would have some chance of playing through the rest of the year and possibly winning a premiership. That's life though.

Surprised he didn't get another run elsewhere but I suspect his heart isn't in it now. Good luck to him.

how does everyone think he would've gone in this side this year?

I only caught grabs of his Tigers form, he seemed to be going ok (when he wasn't injured). He mightn't have had a big enough frame to get a run - one of Nate's advantages is that he has (until recently) managed to get to a lot of contests and create a lot of crumbs for the small forwards. It's a good question and that isn't a good answer but it's hard to say.

Gotta feel for the guy :(

He was the scapegoat for our 2006 season, and IMHO unjustly. There was more to his story than we will probably ever know regarding his move on from the Cats, but I think it's time to let sleeping dogs lay.

nuff said.

Good luck for your future Kent :thumbsu:

Well done kent. Much maligned but he brought so much to the cats. Congrats on a great career! :thumbsu::thumbsu:

The beginning of the end for Kent was winning the Sexiest Player in the AFL comp on TFS a few years back, as a direct result of his girlfriend getting RSI from texting in several thousand votes!!

I feel sad for him, how can a player go from 8 goals in a game (V Kangaroos 2006) to not kicking another goal and being delisted! One of the more ignominious demises in footy.

Would have been good if he'd made a decent go of it at Richmond but he really picked a dud as a t2nd chance team.

Hope retirement treats him well, and better than he copped on here for years!

A fair amount of people had it in for Kent, however for his size and footy skills he was a good player for us, just not in his last year with the club.

It is a bad thing that he will probably be remembered for that year, not the ones where he was the leading goal-kicker.

He put in for the club, a serviceable player. Thanks Kent, good luck.

Couldn't agree more - 50 or 60 a year from a player his size is a phenomenal effort. I still think over 10-15m he would be among the fastest players I've seen from a standing start.

Good luck to Kent in his retirement, it would have been good to see him in the Richmond side a few more times, he was a decent player at Geelong, a couple of leading goalkicking years.

So many players retiring this season, it seems like the end of an era.

good luck to you kent
i always stood up for him, sure he had one bad year, but everyone forgets how well he did play for several seasons before that, i.e. when he narrowly missed out on the coleman medal a few seasons back (cant remember the exact year)
unfrotunately things just didnt have a fairytale finish for him

all the best kent, always keep the memories

Kingsley was good value for Geelong, despite being a whipping boy favourite he kicked 50ish goals 3 times/seasons. He could have been valuable this year I think.

Just an idea to all the big Nathan Ablett fans who need a reality check...

First 3 seasons of AFL:

Games Avg.Goals Avg.Disp
Kingsley 42 1.9 10.3

N.Ablett 27 1.3 8.5

Geelong were not the team they are now when Kingsley played his first 3 seasons either.... Kingsley would not have had the same opportunities.

Funny how fans see players differently isn't it? Nathan a favourite to most, Kingsley always a non-favourite to pretty much everyone but better performer.

Good luck Kent... although from what I've heard from some posters he won't need much luck because he is pretty well off financially. Does anyone know how many goals he has kicked for Geelong, and where he stands on the all time list? Higher than a lot of people would think I suspect.

Long live the Krew!!

played 110 matches for the Cats and kicked 227 goals

l thought kent going to richmond was'nt the best move for him, as richo is there main target and it dose'nt matter how bad richo plays he will never get droped .and kent plays his best footy deep forward and richmonds so called youth policy did'nt help him at all, as much as l liked to hang shit on him he was'nt the worst forward going around, and to be the cats main forward for a few years he did a petty good job better than the other hacks eg spinks,
m white, and in the post gazza sr and billy brownless years he was alright

I must admit, when I first joined Big Footy I was surprised originally at how many people bagged Kent Kingsley. Being the only Geelong supporter I actually know in real life, I had always assumed he was in general well-liked among cat fans; he had one bad year last year and seemed to have been made a bit of a scapegoat, but was good the couple of years beforew that.

With our pace through the midfield this year, I can't help but wonder what would have happened if we had kept him around.

Short Memory

It's not about the goals he kicked - it's about the one's he missed.
The midfield busts a gutt to get down there, then the man who is supposed to kick the goals, misses an easy shot.

Kicked a lot of goals in junk time when the games were won and not when they were needed.

He had to go to make room for Mooney to shine up front.

I also think he was part of the old boy attitude that held us back over the last few years, not bonding as a team etc.... (just my opinion based on a hunch)

If you grouped him with other full forwards of the last 10 years he belonged more in the group with James Cook, Simon Milton-Connell type couldabeens than with top forwards.

Best of luck in retirement - but i reckon he will have regrets.

:D
If you're gonna troll a thread dedicated to the retirement of a past player, at least get your stats right. And FFS, straighten your tie.

Thanks for the memories, Kent, you were entertaining to watch.
All the best for the future.
