Here lies within why we won't make finals this year and certainly not next year unless it's addressed in the off season.
Here is the current top 8 teams and their Key Position Players and when comparing it to our club you can see why we simply cannot win enough games of footy to play finals.
and here is ours.
How we've managed to leave ourselves in this position is blatant incompetency from the Current coach and Recruiters.
Ben Reid isn't the player he once was (pre injuries), Henry Schade a delisted player getting a lifeline, Moore is no where near ready to lead a forward line, Cox is an American who's had less exposure to football than 99.9% of players currently in the AFL and Jesse White who is an athletic battler.
Bulldogs are the only team who manage to defend relatively well with undersized defenders (had no idea Wood was only 187cm) and still kick a score with fairly average talls, which i suspect is why they move the ball so quickly as it gives their medium forwards space to lead in to.
Our game plan should be very similar to the Dogs, to give space for Moore, Fasolo and Elliott to lead into but instead we play treacle slow footy and expect marks to be clunked which we know just won't happen. (Probably a case to have Jeremy Howe play in the goal square and just take hangers all day)
Sam Reid is inconsistent forward but at this stage unless we can convince a tall forward to jump ship he may be our only option in the off season to pursue.
Jackson Trengove would be a very handy addition to defence and i would almost look at making him the number 1 target in the off season as he can swing forward if required.
It's looking very likely we will finish bottom 4, these players appear to be in our range.
1. Jarrod Brander (VIC)
Position: Key forward
Height, weight: 195cm, 83kg
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Projected draft range: Top five
Profile: Brander is regarded as one of 2017's premier key forward prospects. He possesses a combination of speed, agility and strong hands overhead. From his four TAC Cup games in 2016, Brander averaged a very promising 2.5 goals and 6.5 marks per match.
5. Noah Balta (VIC)
Position: Key forward
Height, weight: 193cm, 88kg
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Projected draft range: First to second round
Profile: Freakishly athletic key forward, who breaks the lines like a small or medium size running specialist. He possesses rare speed, leaping ability and some Lance "Buddy" Franklin-like traits. Balta kicked 18 goals from his eight TAC Cup games and with continued improvement has the scope to be as good as anyone in the 2017 draft class.
6. Callum Coleman-Jones (SA)
Position: Key forward/ruck
Height, weight: 199cm, 98kg
Recruited from: Sturt
Projected draft range: First to second round
Profile: Coleman-Jones is the most physically advanced of the talls from the 2017 draft class. He is proficient as a tap ruckman who plays with a physical edge and uses his size effectively. Coleman-Jones is a dominant contested marking force who reads the ball in flight as well as any of next year's ruckman taking powerful contested marks inside the forward 50m. He also hits the scoreboard and pushes into the back half for intercept marks. His 10 contested marks from four Under-18 Championships games speaks to the contested marking force he already is.
Dark days will continue unless we can quickly address the balance of our list, it may mean we will need to trade a midfielder to make this happen but there will be no success with the current KPP stocks.
