There is no mention of this on bigfooty but I thought you might all like to know (in some cases swap 'like' with 'be annoyed') that after 38 years on Channel 9 he is moving to Channel 7.

It was announced at 7pm tonight, Im not sure when all of this will take place (The Advertiser and 5AA will probably run with it tomorrow) but this move means he will be playing some part in the Channel 7 football coverage from 2007 and beyond.

Well Im not surprised he jumped at the chance, when Channel 9 won the coverage he was probably licking his lips at the chance of calling a game live on television, then only to appear not to have been considered and then demoted from sports section of the news.

I had to check my diary to check it wasent April the 1st.

What a shocking move by 7, I thought they were after talent.

When you consider one G Cornes is also with the 7 network, I think the channel is taking itself back 10 years. Surely they can't be drooling at the thought of teaming up KG & GC for special comments on their games from 2007. Oh channel 7, what are you doing?????

Please if there is a god KG will do Port games

That wouldn't bother me ... say what you want about KG but he will put his loyalties to SA ahead of everything else. It's only calling Showdowns that would be unbearable (but no more so than for other teams playing the crowies).

And he's light years ahead of that obnoxious Port hater Stephen Rowe. To paraphrase what an old woman said to me at a crows game in the early 90s "He'd barrack for the Germans if Port were fighting them in WW2".

So ?

I don't see the problem personally.
So what if he's biased? As one person has pointed out, he couldn't be worse than Eddie McCheese, Newman, robertson, Quarterbrain and all the other rabid anti SA zealots whose garbage is continually rammed down our necks. IMO we need the ledger squared. Too many ' wise big mouthed men of the East ' for my liking doing the coverage.

I'd prefer someone who wasn't a laughing stock.

As long as its us doing the laughing it won't bother me but just you watch him jump on our bandwagon.

Now if you believe what you read in the paper, they still haven't worked out a role for him apart from some cameo roles on Today Tonight with Graham Cornes.

Lastly if it were you or me in KG's position, we would be biased as well.

SOrry, I fail to see the problem.

Bias and parochialism are 2 different things. KG is still int he 60s and 70s with his kick a Vic mentality. Sure hope a team wins etc but to call a free for one side and miss it for another and then call for a royal commission into the umpires is past bias.

And he's light years ahead of that obnoxious Port hater Stephen Rowe.
Is that the role he plays or does he genuinely hate them? In radio especially KG and Cornes and over here in Perth Barich and Hardie the announcers take a ''role'' ie Barra is the ''West Aussie is right'' announcer that KG is in SA, is Rowey the ''I hate Port'' announcer?

Germans by 6 ... better offence but suspect defence.

He can be quite magnanimous when the crows are well in front. But you seemed to think we'd be horrified to have him call Port games ... I think he'd be ok other than showdowns.

Don't care whether he's playing a role, he's obnoxious. Anyway, he enjoys his work way too much for someone who you might be suggesting doesn't have his heart in it.

STRIKE ME PINK!!!! Is this for real? When does he start at channel 7? Will he be calling Crows games and The Minister for Port Adelaide, (As Gerard healy called him) Chris Dittmar, be calling Port games?

the ironic thing is we get bagged for one or two of these biased people by the very people who being biased towards us is part of there job description

I suppose this does raise the question what is the role of the commentator?

In the case of KG and Graham Cornes, they will admit there biased and justify their stuff on 5AA by saying there trying to cater for an SA audience Does this make it right?

Depends on the market

Their original and major market on 5aa IS SA and specifically Adelaide urban people. So they are justified in doing so. It is when they go on a show like The Footy Show and continue the antics...whether TFS ask them to do so is another matter.

Today Tonight is a state by state program catering specifically for the state market it is in , with crossover stories as needed. So , once again they will cater to the market

It is when they , and if they, get a national focus ie Tim Gossage is as parochial as KG is and he hasnt learnt to make that shift in focus for the national audience...certainly Gossage can show his bias but not in an over the top manner that he does.

Short answer I guess is '' their market should determine their level of parochialism''

Think you'll find Cunningham's role with Channel Seven will be very, very minor - even more so than the stuff Cornes does for them.

Just because he has signed up with them doesn't mean he's going to be doing stuff for them all the time. He was contracted to Channel 9 for ages but you barely saw him on TV.

They'll just call on him occasionally to be the "stooge" - something he shouldn't have a problem with.

Certainly be really surprised if he has anything to do with match-day stuff at all. He'll still contracted to call the local matches for FiveAA.

He'll probably do a 'hard-hitting' comment on the topic of the week (maybe with Cornes) where he'll give his forthright views on Cousins, Gardiner, Pickett ... but not Burns, Goodwin, Johncock (issue between the player and the club, storm in a teacup, sick to death of all the speculation ... ;) )
