I assume the defensive coach is responsible here but in the past few weeks this area of our game has been getting prgressively worse resulting in idiotic and needless turn overs. I can only speak from TV coverage but when the camera pans from behind the goasl there are no options and even worse, no apparent strategy to create one. For most teams this is an attacking stoppage and ends with a shot on goal. Ours does to but for the opposition lately! Someone needs to take responsibility for this and get it sorted.

I agree TT, we look very average when kicking out, don't know whether it is lack of targets, poor disposal or a host of other things. Port showed us how we should do it in the second quarter Saturday.

wallace, was slow to react to ports tactics of flooding back and fast counter attacks. his coaching hasnt been good all year as he tends to go with the flow rather than innitiate something different to catch teams off guard. he hasnt used the flood at all, unlike other teams that would apply it in an instance or drop player back. its little wonder they cant win.

It all comes back to our biggest weakness of all - We simply dont run hard enough without the ball: whether it be selfless running just to create numbers without receiving the ball on forays forward, or running hard back to position and manning up when the opposition is on the break.

The lack of desperation to get to position is apparent and needs to improve. Take a look at how hard the top sides do these things and then look at us, the difference is marked. Doesnt matter how mych leg speed a team has, without that extra effort and desire you will never be first to the ball and position..

I agree TigerT. We have been very critical of guys like Raines and Deledio this year looking indecisive going forward and running themselves into trouble. I think a key part of that is the lack of options in front of them. They looked so much better last year when there were such options and gusy were ken to do a bit of work without the pill.

We completely lack confidence with our kick outs and it stems from the first match when Bowden put a couple out on the full. Deledio and Newman both look nervous when they go back and Bowden has lost some his natural air of arrogance. Just wait until Casserley comes in and starts taking the kick outs it'll change very quickly.

This is spot on. Nothing to do with tactics or coaches, its simply our desire to work hard that is appalling.

It's even worse when the opposition kicks out.

Well done TT, finally some substance in a thread rather than all the garbage, lets drop him etc

Our kicking out has been sh1te and I mean SH1TE!

Where are the days of Leon Cameron?

Watch Collingwood, Bulldogs and WC and they setup up play from kick ins better than anyone. Than watch Carlton Essendon and you see why they struggle and have to fight harder for their wins.

The amount of plays being set up from kick in has been poor. Whether its our players not running into space or the "kicker" not skillful enough to pinpoint passes??
I agree its more so the former option...

our kicking in is rubbish and our defensive work while the opponent kicks in is even worse again

infact stoppage plays and set plays in general are pretty poor overall

Spot on. We are slack and unaccountable. You would think that we might try and make up for our lack of skill with good old-fashioned hard work.

What intrigues me is whether they are following Terry's instruction or simply ignoring him? Either way - its a worry.

We've always struggled with kick ins. Always too slow. If we could be faster in this area, I think we'd be a much better side. If the player kicking out doesnt have any options within say 3 - 4 seconds, kick it to yourself and start kicking beyond 60 metres.

One satisfying thing during Wallace's first two seasons was the improvement in kickouts and general transition from defense - aside from Cameron's time at the club we'd generally been pretty woeful in this area for the best part of two decades.

IMO, you only have to look at the experience which has left the backline since then (i.e. this season) to see what has changed - Graham (was ultra-reliable in this area in 2005), Kellaway, Hall, Gaspar, P Bowden. Add to that the fact that this season we have seldom had a strong, mobile ruckman to take a grab and clear the defensive 50, or at least bring the ball to ground outside 50.

Kellaway, Gaspar and Hall were certainly no superstars with their disposal, but they worked hard to make position to receive all day long and knew their limitations. P Bowden was slow as a wet week clearing the ball, but he had safe hands, knew how to make space for himself, and was generally fairly reliable with his disposal. Sure, they all collectively usually stuffed up a handful of times a game, but on the days our midfield broke even and the forward line did its job, they formed a perfectly serviceable backline who got the job done.

ATM we only have J Bowden and Newman as relatively experienced defenders - and one of them has to kick the ball out. That leaves the likes of Raines, McGuane, Moore, Polak, Deledio etc to make space creatively, get away from their opponent, win the ball, clear the backline and safely deliver to a runner or designated kicker. Collectively, the above blokes have played almost no lower-level football as defenders, let alone top-level...and what they have played at top-level (I include both Bowdens and Newman in this), they've done so with experienced defenders around them who know the drill.

You can't become a good defender overnight - and being a good defender is as much about creating links between defense and midfield as it is about merely spoiling or curbing your opponent.

All the above is why we look so bad in this area so far this season - lack of ruckmen and seasoned defenders.

Great analysis, agree 100%

Our defence has NFI to be able to link up and move the ball through the midfield.
Our forwards have NFI how to hold the ball in our 50.
Our midfielders should be helping out both ends. And/when they do receive the kick in we need others to play the midfield role ie our defenders running through from the back line! Only Raines plays like a true running backman, and deledio at times when he has had stints there.

couldnt agree more about leon cameron. the guy was a dead set jet with his ability bt foot, either left or right...

has not been the same since he retired and i dont think anyone will ever come close in terms of setting up and the kickins..

imo newman should be the man for the job... has down it a few times this yr and cant remember any real problems when he has kicked in.
i dont understand the persistants with joel. imo has been woeful this season and should not be taking the kickins.......

This actually improved considerably on Friday night but still a shitload of room for improvement. Can't believe we dont deploy a huddle at times or alternate strategies. Watching the Dogs do this makes you realise just how much we miss out on.
