Kieran Butcher was the state 18's captain for WA, and after sustaining a serious leg injury early in the year he came back after the state carnival to play WAFL league for Peel. He performed well in these games and then went back to Colts to play finals, and in my opinion he was the standout for the Peel Colts team in the grandfinal. However he seems to be getting no mention on these boards? Understandably his kicking isn't the most accurate but he is a hard at it, inside midfielder, who could slot into most teams from Round One.

Surely he is a late draft chance?

I have him going in the late 2nd or 3rd round, I know that a couple of clubs are looking at him closely. The issue he has is that he would be purely a needs-based selection, and those players can often slip. Many clubs will not consider him, but a few are and that will probably be enough to see him selected mid-range.

Which clubs are looking at him? I see him fitting into Essendon, he could play a Jobe Watson role and could be crucial in Essendon not getting smashed in the clearances

I am a big fan of this kid and dont understand why there is not more attention surrounding him. I work in mandurah alot so have seen him play quite a bit and he has been outstanding in leage for peel, dont think many other 18 yr olds get tagged at league level. He does seem one paced at times but does have after burners when he needs to. Would be a great pick up in the second or third round. Apparently works full time and lives by himself can anyone confirm that? If so must have a good head on his shoulders

Yep, he is doing an apprenticeship at the moment, works full time and then for one week each month, he needs to go to TAFE. He moved up from Bunbury last year, and is living by himself.

Is a bit of a Butcher of the ball?

I think it is a common misconception that his kicking is terrible, it definitely isn't his strongest asset but it is nowhere near as terrible as say a Matt DeBoer's.

I am going to take a punt and say rookie draft or very late in the ND.
Doesn't have any outstanding qualities or skills... very much a DeBoer type player
but, hard at it, will go team above self etc etc. Will be picked up, but not early.

Mark Hutchings is a good example from last year, played WAFL league, captained the 18s, but he had no outstanding qualities, thus went in the rookie draft.

Another South West boy playing for Peel. Apparently modelled himself on Ben Howlett who was a South West training partner. (Howlett mature aged rookie #30 for Essendon 2009 after being passed over in 3 prior drafts. Ben went on to be upgraded for Rd 1, played 15 games in 2010, finished 8th overall in Essendon F&B and was named rookie of year. Has been permanently upgraded and signed for a further 2 years.)
Butcher seems to be a similar type and would be worth a rookie spot. Obviously highly thought of character as captain of State 18's. Unfortunately though I think he may have to wait like Howlett ... but I hope not. Deserves a chance! :footy:

I agree with you insider. I have been high on him for a while and think he should definately be picked up and probably higher than most expect. Below is my write up of him.

Kieran Butcher DOB 2/3/92 Ht 183 Wt 80

It’s a little hard for me to get a bead on where Butcher is likely to go given he very much has a reputation as a plain vanilla kind of player. Personally I don’t agree with that. This is an inside out mid with elite pace (he would have been 6th at the Combine with his State screening time) and an ability to laser passes into the forward 50. There are very few this year who can deliver their passes as hard and flat as he can. He caught my attention in the NSW games with a couple of lovely passes that he drilled onto the chest of his forwards and more than a few forwards in the competition would love having him delivering those passes into them. His passing can be a little inconsistent but I think he has a nice skill set to build on. I made a comment in my phantom write up that he was fairly one sided and this was wrong. He actually is one of the better dual side players available this year. He is left footed but also is good on his right and gets good penetration and has good feel on his non-preferred. Clearance-wise he wins his fair share and he works hard to get the ball clear often by sheer hard work rather than any innate ability. His hands in close are okay without being outstanding. In the contested situations he often does well to keep the ball in front of himself so that he stays in the contest. In those situations he will often come out the other side with the ball in hand. He has excellent core strength and has a lower centre of gravity which allows him to compete effectively in contests. In space he uses the handball well and is probably one of the better exponents of the attacking handball in this year’s draft. In the forward half he is quite composed in front of goal and takes his time and seems to have a good idea of where the goals are but this is not a strength of his. Down back he looks more unsure of himself and can be prone to panicking and taking poor options. He is a good tackler and is tenacious in the chase and is a nice mark of the ball often judging the ball in flight better than the opposition player. Contested aerial work is not his strength but he takes a few marks by being able to get into space and collect marks. He is a solid guy already and should end up being a pretty powerfully built footballer after a bit of time in the gym. His endurance is solid but is something which will be built on pretty heavily in his first preseason. Butcher was the WA captain this year and led what was really a pretty young team. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and is has started an electrician apprenticeship whilst he waits to see where he is drafted to. I was a bit surprised he did not receive an invite to Draft Combine as I thought he would be more highly regarded than some of the invites. He has been playing senior football for Peel this year and doing okay from a few reports I have seen. I see it as a very strong indication of his ability to step up to AFL level that he was able to step into the WAFL and average 21 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles in senior company right off the bat. I know that Brisbane and Geelong have talked to him and I am sure someone will pick him up. Overall I like him a lot and I will disagree with those who struggle to see him being drafted and personally I thin we will see a lot of him in the AFL next year. The kid is a footballer who has a lot going for him imho.

Looks pretty good to me, going by those clips, would certainly be value as a rookie pickup. Poise under pressure and good evasive skills, kick isn't as bad as first thought either but that was a highlights vid and not a lowlights vid so his kicking probably can't be judged on it alone.
