Apologies, this is my 3rd thread within a few hours but this is a dillema

In my opinion, we need both a key defender and a general defender equally. If both of these players last untill pick 18, who do we take? or do we take them at all?

Disclaimer: I am not suggesting we take either of them with pick 15 but with 18.

Kieran Collins

Kieran is known for being a reliable shut down key defender. He is everything you want in a full back. He wins the one on ones. He doesn't let anyone boss him around, has a great mark and is a reliable kick. His quick reactions, effective ball use and the occasional one percenters will fit perfectly in hawthorns style. Seems a natural replacement for Brian lake and still has room for improvement.

Mitchell Hibberd

Due to injuries, Hibberd missed out on last years draft but has come back as a mature age player. He has the ability to play either half back or midfield with his great composure, ground work and a long kick. He is also able to take the game on with his excellent run and carry skills. finished 2nd in the beep test with 15.4, top 3 in the time trial and won the kicking test.

Hibberd for me... exciting midfield type with good hands and beautiful kick. Must be a little like Birch. Would fill in Sucklings position beautifully.

We've got plenty of cover for Suckers already.

True, but I think Hibberd offers a lot more than Suckers... more so than Litherland as well. With elite foot skills... clean hands... strong marking talent.

The beauty is I dont worry about who we might or not might get as wrighty ALWAYS finds us players. He is a freak. Would be interesting to see how different Carltons strategy to trade week may have been if wright had been released.

I'd prefer Riley Bonner to Mitchell Hibberd.

Agree - a big Bonner fan. Best kick I have seen come out of the 18's in a long long time and a good size.
Also need to look at one the the McKay twins at pick 18 as we have no depth in the key forward positions - O'Brien to me just doesn't look like he is going to make it, 4 years on he is still a rake and struggles for 10 possessions a game at Box Hill with no bags to speak of. As for the big Kiwi he is at least a couple of years away. Sicily is more Gunston, not key position.

i agree that we have no depth but thats why we got fitzpatrick. he'll be afl ready in no time thanks to our trainers and other guys nurturing him

Would like to pick up Kieran Collins with Pick 15 and then Sam Collins (Box Hill) down the road with a late draft pick or rookie pick. Two reasons why:

(1) Defensive boost: Would prop up our defensive stocks nicely. With actual natural defenders (not those converted forward types :p)

(2) Semantic symmetry: Two Collins, two backman. Glorious.

We could then use pick 18 and pick 48 on some mids. Noice.

Big Monky will fill that role that's for sure; no better ruck coach than him.

"quick reactions, effective ball use"
This is something that Haawthorn always looks in a player other than elite kickiing. Let's take him if available.

Hibberd sounds like the sort of player we target:

"Hibberd confirmed why recruiters like him as a possible recruit with a range of strong results at the combine. His long-distance running and endurance base was on show in the beep test by finishing second overall with a level 15.4 run, while he also placed in the top-three for the time trial (10:02 minutes). The Tasmanian also won the kicking test, showing poise on both feet, and was among the leading performers in the goalkicking test. Hibberd missed out on last year's draft as he recovered from injury, but has made up for lost time this season as a 19-year-old"

Collins is seen as the 2nd best defender in the draft pool, according to some draft guru's. So I'll be happy if we pick him, because the best defender will be the number 1 pick.
