I thought I'd listen to this cd a few times before writing my review as i jumped the gun a bit with 'Untouchables' and the replay value of that cd wasnt very high.
However, Korn have written a definate winner of an album this time round.
Each time I listen to 'Take a Look in the Mirror' (Ill call it TALITM from now on) it just gets better and better.
After the last three records have become gradually softer, more experimental and somewhat of a 'maturing' sound, Korn have released a record that would have been the perfect follow up to Life Is Peachy. Not only is it far and away the heaviest album theyve released, it is perfectly written, very melodic and has some absolutely classic tunes on there.
This album is the perfect balance in my opinion between Life Is Peachy and Issues. The raw heaviness and screaming choruses of Life Is Peachy mixed in with the song writing and melodies of Issues. You wont hear Jon playing around with his voice on this record...youll hear plenty of screaming, shouting, growling and damn heavy choruses.
The high points of the album is the Good God-esque first track 'Right Now', the beautifully written 'Counting On Me' (in my view, the best song they have written), the re-make of one of the first songs they ever wrote 'Alive' and the dark groovy 'Im Done'.
I can see a lot of Korn fans rating this as their best album and a lot of non-Korn fans really getting into this album. A lot of people that liked 'Korn' or 'Life Is Peachy' but werent keen on Follow the Leader or the other two records will really like Take a Look In The Mirror.
This album in my opinion rates only slightly behind their self titled effort as their best album to date. Korn is definately back and have re-established themselves as the leader of the hard rock/nu-metal scene.
8.5/10
