When McPharlin went forward Polak seemed the obvious choice for CHB. He really hasn't cemented himself in this position. A number of choices will become available next year. Who should play which key position in 2006 given the following players will probably be available. Who is best as the third tall forward or back. Remembering Sandilands will probably hold down the ruck for longer periods next year and Longmuir will need a permanent position forward or back.

Our talls:

1. Pavlich
2. McPharlin
3. Longmuir
4. Haddrill
5. Johnson
6. Murphy
7. Polak
8. Thornton
9. Parker
10.Warren
11.Campbell (probably won't get a game)

I find it too hard to decide. 3 permanent tall foward seems a necessity to allow all our talented talls to play.

I'd like to see Pavlich, McPharlin and Murphy/Johnson as permanents in the forward line. Or even perhaps Polak if he's not traded. Maybe even Thornton as the 3rd tall in the forward line. The decision becomes too hard.

If it were up to me of the players listed the first 9 would get a spot in the side. Sandilands is not included in that list which is 10 players who are in our top 22 who are regarded as talls. Not to mention our tall midfielders in Dodd and M.Carr. The Fremantle squad seems to have its talents concentrated in the talls in the list.

If you were to name our best 22 regardless of position you would hope that the team would be equal in all fields. That being the top 22 players in the squad would equate to a well-balanced team. At Fremantle i don't think that is the case.

Mouth watering list isnt it....
I mean what other side in the competition other than Saints have a KPP list to match that??
Sandilands hopefully by next year will be able to play the entire game in the middle.
Longmuir and McPharlin to switch positions depending on how they are playing, but are excellent marks, decent kicks and good readers of ther play.
Hadrill at FB next season will make a massive difference, freeing up Thornton and or Parker.
Polak is our major trade bait, providing we get a top 10 pick for him.
If he stays around his position again in my opinion is down back.
Murphy I struggle to find a place for in our side, I dont believe he is a backmen, and at the moment he is only able to play FF, currently McPharlin/Longmuir are the better options. To me Murphy seems far to one dimensional at the moment.
Johnson is a backmen for me, hes the massive fullback we have been crying out for, with "weight" and "time" he will be good.

We have more than enough KPP to build a side around, again its the midfield that needs the focus and needs to step up.
The fact we are last for clearances is testimony to this.

IMO the backline talls will be Hadrill, Warren, Thornton and either Johnson or Polak (Who I believe will be traded) The forward line talls will be Pavlich, McPharlin, Murphy & Longmuir.

I thought Murphy was originally a backman. I also thought he has looked okay in the backline and would consider him for there. Also, isn't Mundy the same height as Haddril? He seems to get tall players to mark.

Would be great to have the ability to switch the KPP's around a bit; MacPharlin down back when needed or if he isn't getting into the play at FF. Pav into the midfield for a burst. Mundy or Murphy coming up the ground.

You are right Pav, McPharlin, Murphy, Johnson & Polak can play either forward or back, I think the key is to select them and play them all to give the side flexibilty. Mundy is the same height as Hadrill but has not got the body strength yet to play on a tall. The young guns in Murphy, Johnson, Mundy, Warren & Polak will all be stronger and better next year.

This year if anything has shown that with out haddrill we suffer from a real lack of size down back. Hadrill is 188cm @ 97kg that is a good size to muscle up to the big forwards. Of the other KPP that could fill FB or CHB, we have:

Adam Campbell 193cm 85kg,

Antoni Grover 188.5 95 (Would be perfect for CHB if he was 5cm taller)

Michael Johnson 195cm 87kg (If he adds 5-10 kg could be our best opption)

Luke McPharlin 193cm 88kg (more dangerous forward)

Ryan Murphy 192cm 86kg (Same as Johnson)

Graham Polak 193cm 88.5kg (Same as Johnson, but need to pull his finger out)

Michael Warren 194 89 (Same as Johnson)

Just for comparison:
Scott Thornton 192cm 84kg, (better for small Half forwards)
Matthew Pavlich 192cm 100kg,
Shane Parker 190cm 93kg (Just not tall enough)

I think Murphy is the key to next season. CC messed around with him too much last year. Personally, I see Murphy as having the most potential improvement in the next year. He seems to be able to put on weight quickly which will only enhance his contested marking. He's a good lead, therefore you would suspect he knows how to read the play. He was originally a backman so the improvment that hes shown already to switch from back to forward is an eye opener.

I think with some focus on weight training, he could become a bit of a brute in the next season.

Polak, with some added weight would give him a lot of confidence. If he gained another 4 or 5 kilo, he would be around 96-97kg. He would be more confident throwing his body around, just like when we first saw him hit the field. His courage back than had everybody salivating. He's taken some pretty big hits over the years, knocked out a few times. That would see a lot of players become a bit more timid. I wanna see that potential fulfilled with Freo, not another team.

PS. Didn't Polak come runner up in the NAB rising star?

I agree with you Marcy regarding Murphy. With another preseason Murphy will be over 90kg and ready to play in the big league. He takes most of his marks on the lead and is a very good kick so if we can have Murphy leading and marking about 40m out and McPharlin inside 20m of goal then we will have a dangerous forward combination.

I don't think you can have ten talls in your side rgauci. 3 talls for either end and 2 ruckmen is usually sufficient. Parker or Thornton would play on a small/medium forward so you could maybe play 4 tall defenders. Narrowing it down is a problem but a great problem to have. Thornton, Warren, Polak, Johnson and Murphy are probably playing for 2 spots assuming Pavlich, Parker, McPharlin, Sandilands, Longmuir and Hadrill are fit.

Mundy's best position is on a half back flank playing off his opponent and drifting across to fill the hole, then running off when we have possession.

Polak did finish second in the rising star (to Koschitzke from memory) but hasn't really developed since.

Lets not fall into the trap of having Longmuir up forward for extended periods of time. He played his best football as a roaming ruckman and played his worst as a permanent FF. A few stints in the forward line to create mis-matches is fine, but if he's up there too long it crowds our forward line and reduces his influence on the game.

McPharlin will be restricted to either FF or out of a forward pocket due to his fragile hamstrings. CHB puts too much pressure on his body. From FF he needs to make a more consistent contest not just the occasional grab...ok, spectacular grab.
CC has stated that he sees Murphy as either CHF or CHB. Murphy, as with Pav, needs to work on his recovery/second effort after missing the mark. Neither show real desperation in that area.
If Murphy wants to make it next year he should start by imposing himself on the WAFL finals (as a South supporter I would like to see that!!).
Pav as HFF in the Hamill mould alongside a bulked up Murphy has appeal but how do you take Pav away from CHF? What a luxury.
Defense is a problem because none of our talls has any real zip or bulk.
Johnson is mobile and has pace but not off the mark which is crucial for a defender.
Our fate may well hang on Polly. Get some bulk but more importantly, desire.
Don't be surprised to see Warren and Duffield promoted from the rookie list.
Warren has a bit of size and I guess if Hayden gets back next year he will add pace down back.

Dude, don't come to a Fremantle board and start bragging about our KPPs.

Especially not when their list of KPPs kicks our lists asses.

None of our KPPs are as good as Pavlich or McPharlin, and the others on the list aren't better, if even.
