He looks enormous in that u-19 pic on his cricinfo profile. How tall is he?

Haydos aside we haven't had too many tall batsman come through.

Kurtis Patterson has become the youngest player to make a ton on debut for NSW. Playing against Western Australia at the SCG, Patterson 18, is the youngest player to make a ton on debut in a first class match in Australia. He was dismissed for 157.

Not bad at all.

He's only 18 isnt he? Also, now that he has made that tonne, watch him play for Aus next year. Baggy Blue-Green.

Here we go

Because all the other states are crawling with 18yo's who make tons at Shield level?

You have to remember to be cautious when making predictions about a player based on one innings. Maddinson was the youngest NSW player to score a century on debut before Patterson and he's struggling at the moment.

Cricketers generally take longer to mature than AFL players or soccer players, you can't know how good they'll be even if they burst onto the scene with a ton but you also can't rule them out if they struggle in their early 20's (Smith, Henriques etc). These guys need time to develop and not have pressure heaped on them at such an early stage.

The good thing about NSW's method is they do give the kids a go and see what they're made of at state level. It's risky if want to win the Shield every year but it's good if you're trying to develop players who will represent their country.

Marcus Harris says hi.

He has had a very dissappinting year. Apart from one gritty effort of carrying his bat for 90 odd against the Bull's he's pretty much been a walking wicket. Was hoping for more, because in the first round of grade cricket he hit another 150 odd I think. I suppose he still is 18/19 but after that promising 150 last year he really hasn't done as much as he would have liked to or needed to.

As others have said, need a few more innings' from Patterson before you can start talking about a baggy green. Plenty of players in all sports have started their careers on fire, but never could live up to the fame their first innings/game gave them. Can't ask for a better start though.

The only way he should be in the frame for a Baggy Green is if he goes Bradman and scores a 100 in each innings for the rest of the season. Else if he can keep his average at around 50 in 2 seasons time then he'll be past the second year syndrome thing.

Your sarcasm meter needs fixing.

Apologies!

And Harris hasn't really set the world on fire IMO, a part from one great innings (I realise Patterson has only played one innings). Agree that there needs to be an extended run of form before he can be selected.

But thats the problem some have with the Australian selection, they pick these raw kids after a couple of good performances when they are nowhere near ready

Got to admire NSW cricket program, obviously they've got the population base and participation to be providing more than their fair share of guns anyway, but obviously administration is doing something right. Other states could learn something.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but another former 'next big thing' who's only 20 in Hazlewood took 4/51 in the first innings, currently sitting on 6/99 for the match. Haven't been watching the game but impressive figures.

looking forward to seeing him bat.

he's a run scoring machine. saw his name bob up last week, is second in the run scoring in sydney grade cricket for the season which is a great effort for an 18 year old.

scored 700 runs in his first season out of green shield (u/16's) playing second grade which i can't ever remember happening. probably hasn't happened for a long time i'd suggest.

its a systemic thing. nsw loses players to the national team, thus opening spots in the state team. they perform and are highlighted for national selection in the coming years.

rinse and repeat.

fwiw stu macgill reckons maddinson should be the next player getting a baggy green

I was at the SCG yesterday. Saw him from zero to 100. He could have been out for a golden - LBW. Terrific cover drive (superb), off the pads, pull, magnificant cut shot. I think he has technical flaws in defense that will need to be ironed out.
Maddinson, however, is in great form (runs aside). He has the technique and will definately play test cricket.
I just dont get where all the lefties are coming from.

Also Hazelwood is good. Really good. Better than Pattinson (but I only say that because Pattinson is Victorian and if he was any good he would be playing AFL - I have never seen him play). But in any case Hazelwood is way better than Siddle - who is one of the worst Australian bowlers ever. The future is good, but unfortunately for you guys it is Blue.

agreed. such a good technique. just having a few problems this season but i reckon he'll work his way through.

it'll be interesting to see how some of these young batsmen (keeper/bat) kick on - nic maddinson, marcus harris, chris lynn, joe burns, kurtis patterson, steve smith, tom triffit...

chock full of talent but not a huge amount of runs from that lot this year

Patterson did really well but he got to smash around the WA part-timers a fair bit as neither Marsh or North could bowl. WA had one first choice bowler at their disposal in Hogan. How can we tell how good someone is when they are facing such poor attacks?

Look at Steve Smith, had an outrageous year, was feted by all, got into the test team and then looked like he'd never held a bat before.

It gave me such a poor idea of Shield bowling when I first saw him.
