Toast Kyle Cheney

Cheney is very solid, even at AFL level. Pit him against someone he has an even chance against and lets see what he can do now. Needs to maintain his footing, other than that he is good. Not quick but not slow, decent kick but not great. Very good defensively one on one in the contest. Would be starting 22 at plenty of other clubs

Problem I see is that he is playing lakes role. Lake obviously returns, but who will Cheney take? You wouldn't want him on a small, he is most suited to a Pavlich / J riewolt type medium sized kpf. I wouldn't want him near say cloke or Hawkins, but you wouldnt also want him on a Stevie J, Betts or lecras type either.

It's a hard question though, he is doing very well.

Why? may I ask.

I think his attitude & from what has been written about him in the Box Hill threads means that he is the perfect depth player to have.

We had a few in the 70s & 80s as well.
I thought at the time we had Birchall and Stratton and we have younger players coming through with Litherland and Kelly and also with Shoey back that will free up Gibson so i just presumed that it may be his time as he had plenty of chances and plenty of this type of player!

Lake on the monster FF, Strats on the FP, Gibbo as the third tall/third man up with 10% more dash and big "chainsaw" on the 2nd fwd. That core 4 works for me, a touch slow but natural development for Strats is likely to add this as well!!!

I thought Kyle was going to be delisted at the end of last year,i personally think he has done very well this year.He must be a great club man for the club to have stuck by him for so long as a depth player. When Lake and Shoey come back he will now just have to adjust to beening on the smaller quicker players, that will be his test now.

Definately wasn't going to be delisted - he is coming off a B&F in a premiership year for Box Hill and is still only 24.

He's actually been playing this well (and better) for two to three seasons now - he just hasn't been given any continuity of opportunity. Don't you all remember Clarkson saying a few times over the last 24 months that "Cheney was stiffer than a dead man" (to miss out on selection). He's been great at Box Hill and is just very unfortunate that Hawthorn have had a very settled and high quality back six (and that he is an in between size). At least 15 other clubs would have a regular spot for him.

damn how can you fit Lake, Gibson, Stratton, Cheney, Birchall, Hodge, Burgoyne, Duryea, Suckling into 1 side?

i guess Suckling might play a little more in the midfield?

It's crazy hey! That's not even considering Schoenmakers either, however we could bring him in as a forward or swingman.

Nice problem to have indeed....17 other clubs wish they had our problems at the minute....We have the most flexible & best balanced squad in the league.

Lake can go fwd, rotating with one of schoenmakers or roughead
Birch, hodge, Burgoyne, suckling and doc can all rotate fwd with stints in the middle

I don't see a role for Bocca once Lake and co are back fit, but has certainly done his bit.

He should seek a trade at year's end.
You underestimate the value of having Cheney in the side
It allows Gibson to spend less time being a cover, and allows him to be more attacking
The one fault of gibbons game, is that his opponent can make him accountable by pushing further up the field
Gibson, with Cheney In a Stronger side, is then afforded more freedom to attack, rather than let his opponent play loose in our forward half

Agreed. He had a fine game.

Kyle will look in the mirror at the end of his football days and be very proud that he gave everything he had to the jumper that he wore.

There are many that possess more natural ability than him, but there are far less that possess more determination, commitment and endeavour.

Well played today.

What Kyle lacks, I reckon, is centimeters to play the opponents he's best suited to.

I am certainly usually more critical of Kyle.

But that was certainly his best game for the club.
