Kyrgios: "I actually don't like tennis"

I have changed my mind with Kyrgios, I think someone close to him should just tell him to give Tennis away for a while.

Sit out for 12 months, if he comes back hungry he will get his ranking back quickly but it is not going to work the way things are. If he never comes back then so be it. A small part of me felt sorry for him tonight on court as crazy as that sounds.

Everything he said post game was lip service.

Because its at the Aust open, home ground, we are seeing it in real time. Whereas in other tourneys internationally we're seeing it on replay. In real time, in our faces it has more punch. What we've seen of his actions overseas is viewed negatively first, but here there is a sense of shit, wow, something is really amiss here.

I think he will realise, should he walk away, that he'll get less attention. His card as a tennis player is gone, what will he be known for if he plays in the nba celeb game?

I keep giving kyrgios another chance i think last night was the last straw for me i had the chance to go queue and watch him but decided the chance of him not giving a shit was high and ended up changing my ticket to margaret court got to see 2 aussies who played well. Yes tomic has his issues but hes not even close when u compare him and kyrgios as far as brain explosions

For me ive now bypassed the kyrgios/tomic generation and started to pin my hopes on jordan thompson and his mates to take us to another level i was impressed with thomspon the other night think he will go much further than kyrgios ever will

As far as biggest flog kyrgios is on top tomic not far behind had a guy next to me at the tennis last night he was cheering on the guy frim dominican republic cause he said tomic was just a flog lol he was also hitting the beers hard so he couldnt string much words together and almost got himself kicked out to it was kinda entertaining

I think one thing that gets forgotten though is that it's not really that long ago that Djokovic was retiring because he was tired/hot, Hewitt was calling umpires less-than-complimentary names alluding to mental illness, Agassi was getting disqualified, Serena Williams was getting defaulted for threatening lineswomen, Nalbandian got done for drawing blood from a linesman by kicking him and so on. Kyrgios' misdemeanours/outbursts are more consistent than most but he's not a lost cause. I get that he's going to lose fans and I don't blame people but I think it's naïve to believe that he's never going to learn to better control it or manage to succeed in the sport. That time may not be in sight right now but it's not a forgone conclusion that it won't arrive.

Just to put it out there. How old does he have to be for this wager to end?

I heard a sports Psychologist in the radio this morning ans he was saying although we are technically adults at 18, the brain doesn't stop growing until we are 24. Then we begin to mature.

The difference between those players you listed and Nick is that I think all of them liked tennis more than Nick does (with the exception maybe of Agassi).

I don't really think there's an age-related cutoff point. People will drop off him at different stages. At some point there's either going to be an indication that there is light at the end of the tunnel or there isn't. At this point he's still 21 and one of only 7 players under 25 in the top 50. There's still a bit of light there.

Serena still doesn't love tennis, but her "issues" are a lot less frequent than Nick's, so it's hard to use her as an example. I think there's a fair argument to be made with Djokovic though. He just wasn't motivated enough to push through pain and hard work early in his career. He may have liked tennis but he certainly didn't like the grind - and at the end of the day, that's what Kyrgios is truly struggling with in my opinion. When things are going well on the court he's certainly having fun. He loves the crowd going up (when he's in a good mood). Early in his career he thrived in pressure situations. The situations aren't identical but I do think there are similarities there.

excellent post. I think some people who dislike kyrios use his on court antics to hide other reasons.

He cares about winning, that's for sure. Sometimes the demands just get to be too much for him though and he's not well equipped to deal with those situations emotionally. He wants to win but isn't in love with the sport, as he has said many times - it's not surprising that he struggles to find the drive to persist with it. Not that that excuses his reaction to such instances, but that's how I see it.

he can talk and say he isn't in love with the sport but this is hardly a guy who has jumped down from the crowd and started to hit a few balls around. He has obviously done alot of training in his past and at one point he must have loved playing.

I think alot of it is because he doesn't have a coach. A coach in tennis part technique, part motivation part life mentor. I don't think he needs a hard arse like say, Lendl. He needs someone like say, Tony Roche. Federer didn't have a coach at one point when he was considered a bit of a brat.

Why he doesn't have a coach when he is only 21 is beyond me

Can't believe this myth is still being perpetuated - people don't hate him because of his race - people hate him because he is one of the biggest flogs in the history of world sport.

I have no doubt there are people who dislike him because of his background. I know some of them

Goodes was at least arguable for the SJWs but with Kyrgios c'mon no way you can link it to race.
