It seems his role is to apply pressure across the entire ground and kick goals if he can rather than be an exclusive forward.
Got one, had a couple of "almosts", Maynard also took the advantage (the set shot may not have been a gimme)
Hit every contest hard.
In a way it was a pretty standard Schultz game, but without the errors. A big part of that was we ran hard and he had blokes to dish off to rather than trying to do too much

Led the game with 4 inside 50
Tackles. Next best was 2 for Perryman. That’s what we targeted him for and he’s performing his role well. Goals a welcome bonus.

Jeepers he’s hard at it. Fearless in putting his body on the line.
With Shoota and Beau hunting oppo flogs up there the panic levels will be intense. Carlton won’t know what hit them if McGovern was shitting himself with an 18yo Richmond draftee 11m away from him

100% this.

Not sure why the love for last nights game tbh?

Was absolutely a standard game from what i saw.
Its literally what he has done since he walked into the club.
Huge defensive plays causing turnovers, gets to contest after contest etc.

Was just made better because others were there to connect and support rather than him being 1 out and biting off too much.

I felt like the difference was that Port weren’t out marking us in our 50 like GWS were, meaning more opportunities for Lachie. Also umps were actually paying holding the ball for once.

To my eye, it did actually look like he gave an extra 5-10% with his chases though (which is impressive seeing as he usually chases at 110% anyway).

helps when you don't go forward at glacial pace !
Was nice to see umps pay the HTB.

Look at this thread blow up because of a normal game for Schultz.....

Where are all the haters saying we over-paid now? He was/is one of the best inside 50 pressure players in the league that has awesome goal sense and we got him in his prime, absolutely worth a Round 1 + Round 2 pick.

The guy literally plays in the least rewarding, hardest working position.

Perhaps it's because the mids were actually able to get the ball forward in his area last night that he was able to do his thing and was noticed.

Elite.

IYO

Bc I hated the trade price we did (and I’ve explained why soooo many times + will do even if he wins a Brownlow and kicks 5 to win a GF) are you suggesting I have to post in this thread after every game justifying my position again? Or are you going to post after every game, regardless of how he plays, how the trade was worth the price?

Cant we just discuss the player and the game now?
- and praise / criticism has to do with how he played?

Played well last night, and it seems he is doing what Beau used to do in a more defensive role while Beau seems more offensive these days.

Still has a long way to go and I’ve been an ardent critic of Shultz, mainly on what the club paid not the player himself.

We did over pay, hugely, it doesn’t matter how you paint it.
He no doubt has a role and has done it to an ok level so far.
I think the pressure got to him last year and he actually looked stressed on the field, he was poor last week and very good last night.
For mine I think the forward additions will help big time and what’s done is done with the trade value but we still paid way overs.

Wasn’t it said on camera at some point that he struggled a lot with the pressure and was really hard on himself and kinda spiralled down?

Then he got suspended, had a mental break, chatted with Fly and came back feeling better?

Would be tough to come from a minnow like Freo to Collingwood. Chris Mayne was a grounded individual who struggled with this too.

Hard to be a bad player in a side that wins by 90+ points. Was serviceable but far behind our top 5.
I think people don't appreciate how difficult the HFF position is. Shoota played it to perfection yesterday.

Golas are a bonus from high half forwards. They push up that far thyere not going to get the opportuintes of the deep forwards. Provide pressure and shut down theyre half backs and let the triple M boys kick a dozen with Bobby and Jamie an couple. I like the look of that new forward Maynard too

The forward pressure was insane last night.
We had even numbers inside our forward 50 when the ball hit the ground as opposed to being totally outnumbered when we do t work hard enough.
Last night was a return to what made us successful.

2023 manic levels. They might have finally sobered up from the flag
