I will probably be in the market to by my first laptop shortly and am just wondering what are the best brands and what features must I insist on getting? I'll definately be after wireless internet(as my housemates both use it in my house). Basically getting one as I do a lot of study all over the place and have to double up, writing on paper then typing it up. Also started working recenlty and am getting sick of emailing files to myself from home so I can access them on the few computers at work.

So whats good? Whats bad? cheers:)

(P.S. I'll have about $2000-$2600 to spend)

P.P.S. want a PC laptop, not a Mac for personal preferance)

With laptops I always recommend well known name brands. Put together jobs aor laptops from companies with strange names are best avoided as they frequently suffer from a variety of issues such as battery life, poor after-sales service (a must with a laptop), heat problems etc.

If it's just going to be your second computer, you could also consider going with a 2nd hand one and save yourself $500+, while still getting a one-year guarantee. Try www.laptop.com.au Don't worry too much about wi-fi either, it's easy enough to buy a wi-fi pcmcia adapter card.

I wouldn't recommend a 2nd hand one, I work at a place that sells them, and we get them back all the time.

I would recomend www.pioneercomputers.com.au
They have excellent computers and laptops. My cricket club has one that is 4 years old and has not missed a beat.My husband has one thats a year old and not a problem.

The cricket club has put in a grant application for another laptop form this mob.Really good one with printer is about 2500.00 including 3 yr in home warranty.

aldi also sells this brand.

id go a toshiba or a compaq

Hmmm I just bought a 2nd hand one..partner wanted aircon + I dont think spending $2500 on something I might drop or roll around in the car is needed.
Compaq 512mbRAM 40GBhdd attachments network cards mouse cords caddies carry case...$600 ..yes I thought it was stolen but the guy seemed more a nerd than me..good guy even brought recovery discs over tonight..

Spend what you can and if your comfortable ..go for it...it is great to sit at work and play some games other than my 8000th game of free cell in 2 years
