This guy is not funny and is basically a smug, patronising, condescending, and corny arseh*le. He's like The Project for people a little more educated. Terrible. You watch it to basically feel verified about your own liberal beliefs, it's nothing but a circle of clapping one another for being more open minded than most people. I am a liberal but this dude's little smug way of saying things puts me off.

Smug, patronising, condescending arseh*le? Do you own a mirror?

Some weeks i get a chuckle and some segments are interesting.

But i definitely preferred him on the Daily Show

He just flat out isnt as funny as Colbert (but who is)

Went to the Colbert show from last Friday with Duchovny while on holiday in NYC. Stephen's great behind the scenes, seemed so genuine. Such a solid replacement for Dave and keeps getting better.

Back on topic, Oliver used to be great however in the last year has become unbearable. Now he just swears like a sailor with his holier than thou attitude and acts like a douchebag every segment.

Yeah the actual jokes have dried up big time. Works better as a fake correspondent on TDS

I hated Letterman. A bitter, personality-less man. He quite simply didn't have much natural personality or humour. When a real talent like Larry David is on, he consistently stopped him from going on his own route and talking about what he wanted; Letterman just kept restricting him back to the pre-written lines and jokes they had for him. He doesn't like people upstaging him and it's incredibly clear his ego is massive.

The stuff with whatsisname, that cartoonist, is depressing as well. The way he used that guy to essentially bully him and belittle him for bad jokes is an insult, and conforms to the age old adage – people who don't have any humour end up jumping on people as comedy.

My dad knew someone who went to Letterman. Apparently he said absolutely nothing in between breaks, barely spoke to the crowd, and when he did it was smug and curt. Essentially he was a campaigner.

Didn't get that vibe at all from seeing Dave live a few years back in his last year on air. Agreed he often cut off people, but I feel like for the majority of guests who carried conversations well (e.g. Tom Hanks, Billy Crystal etc.) any pre-written lines were discarded and he let them do all the talking.

It's common that the host/ guest/ show staff don't say anything to the audience between beaks as they prepare for upcoming segments (the band plays to entertain the crowd). Dave was just as cordial as Colbert for me, they both (like Fallon too when I went to see him) did the usual handful of questions from the crowd pre-show and then offered thanks for participating just before the cameras stopped rolling.

This is why Conan and Colbert are so good. Theyre hilarious in their own right and also genuinely love comedy.

I could watch Norm MacDonald and Conan talk to eachother for hours

I think basing opinions on being in the audience might be a little misleading though. When I saw Conan, he was in a bad mood it seemed and was getting angry about something not being right during the segment before the ad break and he didn't interact with the crowd at all. Maybe it was because his guest was Carson Daly. Either way, I still love him and rate him as the best.

I agree with you that John Oliver has been a bit off the boil this year, although sometimes his righteous anger is undeniably brilliant. The televangelist episode last year was probably the best of the lot, but some of the issues he has delved into this year have been great too. And his ridiculous finishes are still a heap of fun. Last week's debt giveaway was fantastic!

My main gripe is that he has gone on record as saying he didn't want to buy into the Trump-bashing and now makes mention of him every week. His 20-minute takedown of him was perfect, but he needs to heed his own advice and stop going back to that well. It's lazy.

This was just a shitpost for the first few lines, but the combination of those last two sentences turned it into possibly the most ironic thing I've ever read.

His schtick is a little tired.

I think if you come to this show looking for pure comedy or satire then you're probably approaching it in the wrong way.

It's more infotainment along the lines of something like The Checkout. The jokes are mostly just there to enable pretty dry material to be presented in an engaging way.

I watch it mostly because it's interesting rather than because it's funny. It's rare I don't learn something from the main segment; often I'll go away and read a little more about the subject matter.

He's on anti-depressants nowadays coz of that, coz he realized he's too negative about shit off screen and in between for the show and he finally got himself on medication. I dunno why he needs to be negative, his show and staff is possibly the funniest of all the late night talk shows
