Laycock's immediate future in doubt

Essendon medical staff have some tough decisions to make on Jason Laycock’s immediate playing future as the 24-year-old struggles to overcome an ongoing foot complaint which caused him to miss almost a full pre-season.
Laycock played one game for the season in the VFL a fortnight ago but has not returned since as a result of the discomfort in his foot.
Matthew Knights said he would sit down with the club’s medical staff this week before making any decisions on the ruckman’s immediate playing future.

Potentially terrible news.

I think it's good news. He was never going to make it as a League footballer and now it saves us from watching him struggle in our senior ranks.

How can it possibly be seen as good news? We don't have a specialist ruckman available other than Bock, and the kid is anorexic.

What are you talking about, he is nothing but muscle. ;) :D I am now officially on the Bock Bandwagon. Anyone else want to join? Spikey?

HE IS 100% MAN ALL MUSCLE BABY.

I'll join.

Wait wait wait

How long has Laycock been playing with a watch on?!

Damn straight. :thumbsu: Bock is the MAN! It is only a matter of time before he is dominating Cox in the ruck.

Bellchambers has hardly suggested he'll make it either...

True.

But we are talking about Laycock here, not the future prospects of TB.

Laycock had his chances.

I just watched Knights' press conference on BomberTV and it appears that there are two options:

1 - He plans on through the pain to see if it will improve (the **** it - Winderlich approach)

2 - He is out for the season

I've got a feeling they will wrap him in cotton wool and that will be it for the year.

With Bellchambers only likely to miss between 3-6 weeks it is really only this week that we are really deficient in the ruck and back stocks.

After the mid season break we will have Fletcher (NLM and Hurley a few weeks later) to fill in for Hooker who will have to help out Ryder in the ruck.

It's not ideal but there is nothing we can do about it. The key is giving Paddy as much help as we can in the ruck this week so that he is able to get to the mid season break unscathed.

Gutted for Laycock though...he is one of my favourite players.

Well personally I think Layock getting injured again is very bad news, much worse than the news of Bellchambers getting inured. And that news of either of them getting injured is not "good". Laycock had his chances, yes, and he showed promise in some of his chances, ie vs Melbourne in 07.

If you think Laycock is getting injured is good because it means he can't get any more chances, then I really don't know what to say to you :thumbsd:

Listen, don't go getting all emotional. I know you have faith in Jason.

Me, I have none left.

My faith in him is ruined by the many pathetic performances that he has dished up over the years while playing in an Essendon jumper.

Players get injured and some people get romantic about big comebacks.

Even if he was playing this week, there would be no fairytale story. it would be the same old Laycock. Buts just me.:)

Nobby, are you insisting that you'd rather have Lucas or Hooker pinch-hit in the ruck, than have Laycock, a specialist ruckman, contribute his usual 10-15 hitouts, 10 disposals, a few marks and maybe a goal or two?
I understand the Laycock frustration, but honestly, having him out there to relieve Ryder for 6 or 7 minutes a quarter is surely better than throwing in someone who will more than likely just be making up numbers.

Read that Laycock is out for the season.

My first thought - terrible luck for the bombers with what happened to hille a few rounds back.

My second though - in the long run, fantastic news for ryder. He's only young but has shown his ability already, and now with such massive responsibility on his shoulders for at least 12 rounds, this is going to do him great for his longer term future. Given his age, yes he will likely struggle at times, but the experience, leadership and further improvement that will come about with this extra responsibility is going to show just what sort of character he has, and I would imagine that if there is any positive to take out of this, it's being able to sit back and watch ryder take the next few steps toward greater heights.

just thought i'd post my thoughts for the **** of it

Always nice to hear the thoughts of opposition supporters.

It is a great opportunity for Paddy, but it also increases the chance of him becoming overworked and succumbing to soft tissue injuries.

Thankfully we don't play you again in the H&A season as I can imagine Brogan and Lade getting stuck into him physically and giving him a real working over.

This news is increadibly frustrating.

It won't be the end of Laycock if he can get a clean bill of health for the start of the pre-season for 2010. This year has shown that you are only even a bad few weeks away from complete shambles in terms of injuries. More impotantly, Laycock is just too good a prospect to de-list without giving watching him over a season with the benefit of a full preseason behind him.

Laycock seems soft because he seems to play without any passion. He does need to be given a chance to prove that this is not the case. The bottom line is that he is a sublimely talented player who is capable of kicking goals as a forward and being very damaging as an around the ground ruckman.

At the very least he is protecion against continued injury problems in the forward line and in the ruck, assuming that he gets himself ready to play.

I also don't buy into the idea that he is just holding up Bellchambers. One of the few things Sheedy has been harping on about in the last few years that makes any sense is that we are loosing far too many telented players to the game. Given licence to go a bit further with this idea is that the value being placed on the jumper is lessened by the AFL wide insistence on giving young players a run just because they are young. Going into nex year we have Hille and Ryder. Hille is coming off a knee reco so he may never regain anything close to his form of last year. So the only ruckman you can put money on for next year is Ryder. Bellchambers is a long way from justifying a spot in the side on anything other than the fact that he is a ruckman. Laycock, provided he is fit and has been read the riot act, will be vital to our club next year.

The picture of Bock is pretty funny really. He needs to spend an offshore summer with Guido Hatsis. I wonder Bock will ever put weight on. I know if young but he doesn't look like he has the frame for it. I take heart from the fact that his brother is a tank (in the strengh and aerobic sense) but then he is different enough from Nathan to think that Christian may never put the reqired weight on.

Shocking news for Laycock and Essendon.

Possibly season defining for us.:thumbsd:
