Ok, If I am the Red VL wanting to turn right, am I allowed to pick whichever lane I want to go in to, or do I have to follow the imaginary guide line and auto go into the right lane, then go into the left lane.

Family Debate which is getting pretty heated :D
 
If there's a car turning left into the same road then you should go straight into the right lane. You do have right of way but to take two lanes up thereby not allowing someone else to turn at the same time would be selfish. If there's no one else turing into that same road then you can take whatever lane you want.

Forget the actual road rules, somethings are unwritten and this is one of them.
 
BB is right. It's an unwritten rule of road courtesy that if someone else is turning into the same road as you, you stick to the lane markings. However, if you're the only one turning, do what you like! :p
 
Follow the arrows, left arrow is showing only left hand turn and the other is for staight ahead and right turn. The most important thing is to watch out for bikes. :p

Yes, but you need to have a look over the other side of the intersection, into the traffic coming towards you. Are any of the cars on the other side planning to turn left into the same road as you're planning to turn right into? If there are, the rule is that they choose the left lane in the new road, and you choose the right lane.

However, if there's no-one competing with you for lanes in the new road, pick whichever one you like.

Does that make sense? :confused:
 
You're supposed to turn lane-to-lane. You are also supposed to wait for two clear lanes before merging or turning from a side street. It's also illegal for a pedestrian to walk onto the road from between two parked cars.


Dont know that I have ever seen anyone obey those rules.

I really would lay off her,celtic pride,i mean as someone said it's 'getting old' and also very lame.
 
The rule is that if you are turning right as in your diagram, you must turn into the right lane. If you want to move to the left lane, you then need to indicate and check your blind spot, then change lanes. Not many people actually do this of course, which I guess is why you have a debate happening.

no because someone may want to go straight and you will turn into them... its against the law really to go against those arrows and if you crash into a car on your right, whilst turning... you will be liable

well technically yes, once you turn right you are supposed to hit the right lane. this was something i as taught by the racv when i was learning. it makes sense, if everyone did that then traffic from the other direction could then turn left into the same road and go to the left hand lane. win-win!
