Liverpool FC,
I was just thinking with the team we had against Adelaide it may be the quickest team for leg speed that we could produce.

In know order. Wojo, varcoe,Motlop,Bundy,THunt,Byrnes and Menzel and Duncan have solid pace as well. Its good to know that we have this speed at our call when we need it.

Interesting point. The finals are not that far away and us Cat fans want the best Geelong side possible out on the park, but our leg speed with our experienced senior guys isn't overally good. The young guys on sunday showed some pace and really good forward pressure. I just don't want us to get run off our feet in a finals game this year like what happened last year in the prelim, we need pace but it is all coming from the younger guys with little experience. We just have to hope that our "new" game plan holds up really well.

You get made to look slow when you are getting belted. It wasn't just leg speed last year. The team was tired and sore. Scarlett, Corey and Ottens, our 3 most important players missed at least 8 games each through injury.

After all, health is the most important thing. Poor Matty Egan.

By the way, What is the rule of qualifying a premiership player? If a player plays all 24(25) matches leading to the grand final but misses this season decider, will he able to be a premiership member? What about a player who only plays in the grand final for the entire season?( I know this a bit ridiculous and unrealistic but just ask the rule).

Thanks everyone.:):thumbsu:

And I don't regard Mitch Duncan as a speedster. I think he's a kind of ...like a combined Johnson and Chappy.
He's not been as good as early season. But he will come back. Very active on ground and shows the potential of winning hard ball. Will have a bright future.

agree, the guy was an All Australian if I'm not mistaken? He was beating Jonathan Brown one on one in his prime and starting to become of our best alongside Scarlett until that terrible foot injury. He was rushed back far too quickly but little did he realize we'd remain a top side for years ahead.
It does not get talked about much at all but Geelong have actually been rotating older/retired players without anyone hardly noticing, the likes of Harley, Rooke, Egan, Ablett and even Mooney in recent times.
The next batch to get rotated around will be Scarlett, Ottens, Ling and Milburn.
So far it's unoticeable which either means A - Some of the kids playing today are actually better than what anyone could have believed or B - The last 5 to eventually retire have been far better than what we could have ever thought and just take them for granted.

There are so many aspects to having a very good side. Leg speed is but one.

We have won 2 Premierships without much leg speed in the team. This year we are the second best team - and we will need to bring something extra to the table to win this year's finals and GF.

Given the way the game has evolved re the forward press and a greater emphasis on tackling in the forward half - so leg speed has become a little more important IMO.

So a little more in the team would be good - but it does not replace awareness, toughness and skill. You must have those as well.

Given we have an abundance of players who have these attributes - but not much leg speed to break the lines or burn off an opponent - having some more leg speed could be a factor of some significance to us.

Leg speed can help break the forward press that the Pies will no doubt use against us, and they will believe that will be one of the main reasons why they can beat us when it counts. If Bundy, THunt, Varcoe and one of Byrnes or Wojo are in the team - we just might have a quicker running team than we have had in previous finals.

As long as whoever gets the nod above - brings awareness, toughness and skill first to the table - leg speed could be an added bonus to our game plan.

Not sure we can manage to put a team together that will be faster than Collingwood - but it would be nice to think we could close the gap in this area.

Nah he's got plenty of toe, just hasn't found the confidence to use it.

Wojac is the master. He just tucks it under his wing and bolts of there's enough room. When it comes off he's a star.

That's what Hunt has to learn. When to back his judgement and break the lines and when he needs to be a little conservative.

He'll get the balance right with confodence and more game time under his belt.

Leg speed is being used more so as a defensive factor, pressuring opposition to rush their disposal in hope of a turnover. I rate legspeed and love watching the quicker players torch their opponents but until I see a bloke outrun a Josh Hunt 60 metre stab pass, I'll take accurate kicking ahead of leg speed.

I think Taylor Hunt looks slow, is it just me?

think it's just you!

no, in all seriousness, he has good leg speed, let's see it this Sat at the Dome, wider flanks, etc.

Watching the replay, that WAS THE QUICKEST we have ever been since I've followed Geelong. We made Crows look slow. Your thought appears to be a fact. While at the game, we did appear to be slick, but the replay really demonstrated our leg speed, which will be essential against Carlton in September

I am pretty sure you have to play the grand final to be listed as part of a premiership team.
Stokes didnt get a medal when he was left out of 09, and there was a big thing about last years grand final that any player left out of the replay would still get a medal if they played the previous week.

Whilst this discussion is a little off topic- I have always felt that guys who have input through the year but dont get to play in the GF should get some sort of medal/recognition

In addition to injured players like Egan for instance missing out through tragic circumstance It will also become more of an issue as 'list management' takes on more importance.
Teams with cattle will cycle through more players Peripheral players contribution will be more significant to the final outcome. They should get some material reward other than a warm fuzzy feeling .
But where do you draw the line?
Perhaps the clubs should issue their own GF medals to broader contributors

Come September there is no chance they will all play as we will definately be looking for the guys who can win there own ball. the key will be the balance of hardball winners and quick players. With Selwood, kelly,Stokes to def come in we gain players who can win more on on ones which i think is the key.
Interesting times.

BTW I was serious about the crows. I have watched them a few times this year and they have a knack at the moment of making teams look quick! I am not saying that the cats don't have leg speed ( which I believe is slightly overemphasized by the pundits anyway -along with all the BS about being too old etc) Lets wait and see

I think the leg speed issue is critical if we are to win the flag . i will be more specific -if everything goes to plan and we play Collingwood in GF -The one area or one line i am really concerned about is Collingwoods half back line -in relation to leg speed -Heath Shaw Harry Obrien and Leon Davis are all guns and super quick -if its a fine day they could cut us to pieces The match ups on those 3 players is going to be super critical. Like Enright and Milburn have been magnificent players but they aernt quick-there not going to do a Heath Shaw grab the ball at a million miles an hour have 3 bounces and whip it up to the forward line . Can our forward line cope with Collingwoods back line -i read an interesting post on an opposition board after our 9th win -it went along the lines of-this might sound sort of Weird -but for a team that has won 9 in a row their forward line looks suspect

Personally i hope it rains everyday in September and the grounds heavy -because then pace goes out the door and footy smarts are what its all about. If its wet in September where unbeatable -theres no better wet weather team than Geelong.

Speed is over rated. Strength and skill is what we have proven to be the most important. Leg speed does not equal fast football. Tenace, Spriggs and David Clarke had great leg speed.

The team that played the Crows would be demolished by our best "slow" 22. The crows are just completely shit. Seriously, who is their best player?
